It never made sense to me, how Joe Pesci's character is narrating the events--including the set-up to his getting whacked.

It doesn't make sense in terms of structure, killing a narrator. Especially when he's recounting everything in the past tense. At least have him saying, "I'm SETTING up a meeting...", etc., in his last sequence.
