The 80s were when I realized our country, our world was heading for self destruction very very quickly. Now I realize that people still don't see just how fast our destruction is approaching. I give civilization about 3 - 4 more weeks till it completely erupts in mass hysterical chaos, mayhem, madness, and horrendous suffering. This song is proof that the planet is about to explode.
Jody watley said at this stage they could barely stand one another, the group did well in europe , this was at the top of the pops studio in central london., not long after Jody and Jefferey left shalamar leaving Howard Hewitt on his own , he was given 2 new members but they were not jeffery and jody..
I love this. Agreat performance - except for Jodie screwing up the handoff of the mike. The energy here is timeless. They're having way too much fun to have been getting paid at the same time.
@jeffreyppp I didn't see Jody Watley screw up anything maybe Daniels was slow to receive and missed his mark., eh?Jody Watley Haterade? SMDH. She brought pizazz to the group vocally and visually. She was also the choreographer and wardrobe designer from my research. I'm new to Youtube but in every Solar video someone inevitably hates that sistah. What's the deal? I personally prefer Jody Watley's "Friends" with Eric B and Rakim but this is good too
That was one of those 1960 like clapping, great crowds behind them.Man what energy! Where is this type of music artists of today? MAN YOU GUYS SUCK! Bring back the feel good music, the talent, the singing, the dancing, the soul, the lyrics, and maybe we can get out of this AMERICAN IDOL, BLACK HOLE of music!
@prince07abban No No No :) Micki Free wasn't an original member of Shalamar. He came along later on when the group members totally changed. The guy who was doing the moonwalk at the begining of this video was the original member named Jeffrey Daniel.
You can see the actual Micki Free here on Youtube by typing in the search box "Shalamar - Micki Free - Unsung Heros - TV One". You can also watch him on a Shalamar music video called "Games" :)
N.B. : was that show "Razzmatazz" popular in the U.K., back in the eighties ...?? Being not native of the U.K. and having spent my pre-1980s days in Belgium, i only know of "Tops Of The Pops" or "The Tube" ...what about that "Razzmatazz", was it popular and welcome major group too ...??
Then, it was widely known and performed in the streets by african-american kids/teenagers that would make it in the streets, especially in the 1970s and 1980s...
O.K.,O.K. if we want to make justice let us say that the dance move that was later known as "Moonwalk" existed long before the eighties, even before the 1970s , it's mainly an african-american thing, true, and was to be seen -already- in videos of the 1940s(or even before), by jazzmen or other black (music-hall) performers of that era... but it has also been performed by guys as famous as the mime Marceau -that's also true- or even Fred Astaire...
Some thumbs down you deserve, you dumb ! It's Jeffrey Daniels, on the contrary, who performed the "moonwalk" way before Michael Jackson did it, it's even him -among others- who taught it to Michael Jackson; Michael Jackson only made it popular for he was supposed to be more famous than Jeffrey Daniels and than Shalamar, more generally... It's Michael Jackson who named it "moonwalk" Jeffrey Daniels would simply call it "backslide"...!!...Please try to get informed before commenting!
this band was so great.... i was 11 when this was out and i bought the album and leanred the bass line...back in the 80s my family were not very well off money wise..so the only way i could obtain records was to cut grass...i recall going to the mall coverd in grass buying this album lol...miss jody surely did well for herself solo..she is a very nice lady i talked to her once..i look around the musical landscape now and i see no one who comes close to some of the ladies in the 80s, miss it all
One of my favorite Shalamar joints! Together they were simply electric. But what about Howard rockin' that Luke Skywalker ensemble? Can I get a witness?!
and now we know where madonna got her moves! jody watley. this was a few years before holiday...man even those jumps n the air! shalamar are brilliant and jeffrey is an icon!
This entire video is off rhythm Shalamar is moving slightly slower then the music. Question does anyone know if MJ said he got his moon walk steps from watching kids in from Cali or NY?
Tony, where are you? Are you still in the US Army? All this years I have been worried they would send you to Afghanistan or Irak, I still listen to this, our music and never give up looking for you, Heidi, your Baby
@ritinha673 Heidi, I'm living in China now. I became a Communist and I have devoted my life to the revolution. Someday we will rise up and murder all the rich people who oppress us. Come visit me, we can eat ice cream together again. Love, Tony.
You can tell Jeff taught MJ those steps! Was Jeff married to Stephanie Mills at one point in history? lol MAN look at those outfits The makers of Mortal Combat had to have saw this video at one point. Howard Hewitt's outfit looks just like the the outfit of Sub-Zero or Smoke or even Scorpion lol. Jody was sooo cute. An I'm really diggin Jeffs outfit and his hair.
OMG!! Just loved this funky group sooooooo much!! I want them back NOW!! I used to copy their moves to this song at home. Howard Hewitt YOU'RE THE BOMB!!!!!

Lisa Stansfield was a host for this particular British television show Shalamar is performing on. Its called "Razzmatazz". Just a little known sidenote 4 any1 who cares. LOL.
He is wearing suitable gear for setting off to Sherwood Forest to meet Maid Marion. Wonderful group this. First heard this track whilst camping at Milford on Sea in Hampshire the summer it was released. Wish I had a time machine to go back there.
I feel like crying...some of my favaorite childhood memories. Fab music on Kids Tv when it was good. Loved this group..and I remember the days of Ra-Ra-Ra-Ra Razamataz!!
This moonwalk business was already old in the 50-60s when Marcel Marseau performed it as the 'mime' walk! Cavemen were probably doing it ! 50,000 years ago!!!
didn't jeffrey daniels record a solo album for solar records called skinny boy? has anyone seen his name in any official choreography credits for michael, if he really taught him or worked on videos, or was he just a background dancer like in shalamar?
I dont care about this moonwalk debate I was poopin in 82 and I was 10..Shalamar were wicked we didnt get a lot of decent music televised back in the day here (london)...Havent stopped listening to them
Same here! I have all the Shalamar singles on vinyl! Started deejaying in 1983, when I was 11 and used to play a lot of their stuff like Night to remember and Dead giveaway at that time (and New edition - Candy girl!)
Cant believe i wrote poopin instead of poppin hahahaaa..I was poopin too but that was interspersed by backspins and locking lmfao..Nice 1 mate,i still kept hold of the vinyl too,
I guess alot of people dont realize that the moonwalk was originally created by Bill Bailey in 1955 later revolutionalized by the Electric Boogaloos in the late 70s early 80s who then taught Daniels who then taught MJ who mastered it...its interesting
Maybe I do have it backwards...i gotta check that out...daniel was some dancer wasnt he!...I enjoy watchin his performances...they need more here on youtube
I CREATED THE MOONWALK IN 1973 IN MY PRIMARY SCHOOL. WE CALLED IT BACKSTEPPING. I HAD AN AFRICAN AMERICAN COUSIN AND HE SOON LEFT AN RETURNED TO HIS COUNTRY AFEW LATERS I SAW MY MOVES BEING EXECUTED IN ELECTRO VIDEOS. IM NOT BITTER IM JUST PLEsed 4 all my sons. peace
Jeffrey Daniels actually taught MJ how to do the moonwalk. It was on one of MJ's documentaries long before he died - that JD choreographed some of his moves.
I'm sorry; but Jeffrey DanielS (not "Daniel"...) performed the moonwalk (re-named like that by Michael Jackson,by the way,Daniels named it the first : the "backslide"...) years before that video; in 1979...that is to say loooong before Michael Jackson;... and it's Jeffrey Daniels who even taught Michael Jackson most of his dance moves;... don't you forget that guys... !!...
Ok, well Jeffery didn't invent the moonwalk either, he was taught and then taught MJ, its not an original creation from the 70's anyway, its been around longer, You guys act as if Jeffery invented the dance move, uh, no, he was taught by those guys like the Electric Boogaloo's and more, they did it on TV before Jeffery did.
Strange enough I erad up that Daniel actually taught the electric boogaloos...who really knows...as far i know...the boogaloos actual claimed that Daniel taught them most of their slide step, pop and lock moves, Boogaloo sam has got to get credit for aloot of his movements as well...many people should look back on Cab Calloway
The best Shalamar was with Jody, Howard and Jeffrey. Great elements came together to give the sound we needed in the 80's. Jody Watley's voice is so distinctive, no other female can replace it, they should have realized that back then. So sad that they are still estranged from eachother. Wish they would all get back together just one more time.
RIGHT soul group, WRONG audience. All they're doing is clapping & they're all out of sync. How can you have 3 talented guys in front of you with brilliant music surrounding you & not feel the need to move your body! ! ! I feel all the energy just watching the video. Jeff HOT Daniels always got sexier as he danced. If it was a black audience, it would have been different.
So stupid comment!!! Look at where they were performing(Razzamatazz is a kids programme), us white folk appreciate this music so much & probably 99% of those kids will be still dancing to this now!!!
I know this music is appreciated by many races, that's not the point i was making. It's in the blood for black people to naturally "bop" to music, them being kids has nothing to do with it. Generally speaking - a black person, you hear good music, you move. There are many mini MJs around, have you not seen?
This was a uk performance and the crowd were predominantly white kids..i know i was one watching on tv..
But the right band the right place for me, as jeff when he performed night to remember on his own and just danced, that was the 1st time the uk saw popping and the moonwalk.
So for me they were innovators paving the way, for others.
And black or white, we loved this music, i was brought up on northern soul and mowtown. later to love detroit techno. its all connected. :)
You've just proved my earlier comment by stating that the audience was predominantly white. And why bother mention that black & whites can enjoy this type of music, of course they can! That's not the point i was trying to make!
No problem.all i was saying that this was the 1st time the uk saw somebody bodypoppin, it was quite a ground breaking moment, and the audience we just dumb struck really as they had never seen anyone doing the moonwalk. color has nothing to do with it...
it was all about the music and the culture and we developed our own...
@Trinax14 u think so? well, considering that shalamar was more popular in europe than the USA, i'm not so sure about that! they were HUGE in europe, like michael jackson huge b/c of daniel's dancing on "Top of the Pops"
@Trinax14 Why would it have been different if it had been a black audience? Surely the correct thing to say would have been "why that audience?" and the answer would be because that was Top of the Pops and you were told how to be.
@Trinax14 Yeah but I think because of the theme of the song it was right for the children. The song is hot but it's kinda teeny bubble gumish so why not have them perform it in that type of audience.
@Trinax14 : So ya saying all we good for is dancing? The set is full of a bunch 'o kids that are told to clap - even though they probably think Shalamar stink!
I remember this cut in 1982. Their look on this video was done in 1983.I have all their cd's including "Go For It". This group group was the shiz-nik.......Today there are no groups. Too Bad. The younger genration is missing out.
The funny thing about this song and them singing about such great friends they all have is that they all intensely hated each other and Jody Watley still wants nothing to do w/ the other two to this day.
What a heap of crap Shizzlacher. Watley and Daniel left Shalamar due to artistic differences with their record label, Solar. All three remained friends, and have appeared on TV together on several occasions !.
That's Jody's personal youtube profile. She does periodic vlogs, including a 3-parter on their TVOne Unsung profile. She doesn't sound too friendly to me.
@Shizzlacher To the contrary she seems quite lovely to me full of good spirits on her clips sharing her perspective on the other hand from what i've seen it's the dudes who don't seem friendly from interview clips of theirs especially the Hewitt guyand Daniels comes across as fake on Unsung
@stilettogroove I meant she didn't sound too friendly toward Howard or Jeffrey. I heard when Babyface covered "For The Lover In You", she refused to be in the same room w/ them while they video was being shot.
There was no dance called the moonwalk, and never did James Brown do such a type of dance, he may have danced backwards, but Jeffrey Daniels, was the first to dance the moonwalk. Micheal followed and the name was coined.
actually it was bill bailey in 1955 that first was credited with moonwalking - so james learnt from bill i guess - who cares, jeffrey, james B and MJ great dancers - take care xx
i watch these videos and think about how much jody and shalamar in general was copied by madonna. they totally deserve remaatering and re releasing. and thank god for youtube so that we can see these talented stars all over again.
never noticed but you are DEAD ON, they were making the music and dressing all of that at least 2 to 3 years before Madonna. Its ok though, most artist take influence from others but its always one who takes it and explodes it.
WOW....you ARE "dead on"! Madonna's "lucky star" and "borderline" video's borrow heavily from the wardrobe AND dance steps. Great observation. I still love Shalamar.
wow, Howard has on an Anakin Skywalker Jedi vest. Wardrobe did him wrong. I'm so glad the music overshadows their dancing and wardrobe.

kailahun2802 2 years ago
I'm sorry; but Jeffrey DanielS (not "Daniel"...) performed the moonwalk (re-named like that by Michael Jackson,by the way,Daniels named it the first : the "backslide"...) years before that video; in 1979...that is to say loooong before Michael Jackson;... and it's Jeffrey Daniels who even taught Michael Jackson most of his dance moves;... don't you forget that guys... !!...
potrezaml 2 years ago 2
Ok, well Jeffery didn't invent the moonwalk either, he was taught and then taught MJ, its not an original creation from the 70's anyway, its been around longer, You guys act as if Jeffery invented the dance move, uh, no, he was taught by those guys like the Electric Boogaloo's and more, they did it on TV before Jeffery did.
1980Triumph 2 years ago
Strange enough I erad up that Daniel actually taught the electric boogaloos...who really knows...as far i know...the boogaloos actual claimed that Daniel taught them most of their slide step, pop and lock moves, Boogaloo sam has got to get credit for aloot of his movements as well...many people should look back on Cab Calloway

Love this song, especially Jeffrey's lil high pitch yelps at the end. The dance moves were hot too!
cologneprince 2 years ago
Wow he did the moonwalk and MJ just mastered that move to perfection

The best Shalamar was with Jody, Howard and Jeffrey. Great elements came together to give the sound we needed in the 80's. Jody Watley's voice is so distinctive, no other female can replace it, they should have realized that back then. So sad that they are still estranged from eachother. Wish they would all get back together just one more time.

They're flawless!!!
GhettoKarter1992 2 years ago 2
RIGHT soul group, WRONG audience. All they're doing is clapping & they're all out of sync. How can you have 3 talented guys in front of you with brilliant music surrounding you & not feel the need to move your body! ! ! I feel all the energy just watching the video. Jeff HOT Daniels always got sexier as he danced. If it was a black audience, it would have been different.
Trinax14 2 years ago 15
They're just kids. They'd probably rather be at home having their tea.
lewisner 2 years ago
So stupid comment!!! Look at where they were performing(Razzamatazz is a kids programme), us white folk appreciate this music so much & probably 99% of those kids will be still dancing to this now!!!
shazjeb 2 years ago
I know this music is appreciated by many races, that's not the point i was making. It's in the blood for black people to naturally "bop" to music, them being kids has nothing to do with it. Generally speaking - a black person, you hear good music, you move. There are many mini MJs around, have you not seen?
Trinax14 2 years ago 2
true but I think the fact most of the audience look like they are about 8 would have something to do with it...
but having said that, i often wonder where they got these studio audiences from. most totp style shows recall similarly crappy audience participation.

lol and thats not racist.

I disagree..
ev3nflow 2 years ago 2
You've just proved my earlier comment by stating that the audience was predominantly white. And why bother mention that black & whites can enjoy this type of music, of course they can! That's not the point i was trying to make!
Trinax14 2 years ago
No problem.all i was saying that this was the 1st time the uk saw somebody bodypoppin, it was quite a ground breaking moment, and the audience we just dumb struck really as they had never seen anyone doing the moonwalk. color has nothing to do with it...
it was all about the music and the culture and we developed our own...
ev3nflow 2 years ago
@Trinax14 u think so? well, considering that shalamar was more popular in europe than the USA, i'm not so sure about that! they were HUGE in europe, like michael jackson huge b/c of daniel's dancing on "Top of the Pops"
Majesticon 1 year ago
@Trinax14 Why would it have been different if it had been a black audience? Surely the correct thing to say would have been "why that audience?" and the answer would be because that was Top of the Pops and you were told how to be.
MsJojo2401 1 year ago
@Trinax14 Yeah but I think because of the theme of the song it was right for the children. The song is hot but it's kinda teeny bubble gumish so why not have them perform it in that type of audience.
MrSexxxy20 1 year ago
@Trinax14 : So ya saying all we good for is dancing? The set is full of a bunch 'o kids that are told to clap - even though they probably think Shalamar stink!

The funny thing about this song and them singing about such great friends they all have is that they all intensely hated each other and Jody Watley still wants nothing to do w/ the other two to this day.
Shizzlacher 2 years ago
What a heap of crap Shizzlacher. Watley and Daniel left Shalamar due to artistic differences with their record label, Solar. All three remained friends, and have appeared on TV together on several occasions !.

That's Jody's personal youtube profile. She does periodic vlogs, including a 3-parter on their TVOne Unsung profile. She doesn't sound too friendly to me.
Shizzlacher 1 year ago
@Shizzlacher To the contrary she seems quite lovely to me full of good spirits on her clips sharing her perspective on the other hand from what i've seen it's the dudes who don't seem friendly from interview clips of theirs especially the Hewitt guyand Daniels comes across as fake on Unsung
stilettogroove 1 year ago
@stilettogroove I meant she didn't sound too friendly toward Howard or Jeffrey. I heard when Babyface covered "For The Lover In You", she refused to be in the same room w/ them while they video was being shot.

James Brown was Moonwalking a long time before Jeffrey Daniel or Michael Jackson.
QuartzLondon 3 years ago
There was no dance called the moonwalk, and never did James Brown do such a type of dance, he may have danced backwards, but Jeffrey Daniels, was the first to dance the moonwalk. Micheal followed and the name was coined.
CocoaErmine 3 years ago
actually it was bill bailey in 1955 that first was credited with moonwalking - so james learnt from bill i guess - who cares, jeffrey, james B and MJ great dancers - take care xx

i watch these videos and think about how much jody and shalamar in general was copied by madonna. they totally deserve remaatering and re releasing. and thank god for youtube so that we can see these talented stars all over again.
best1forward 3 years ago 7
never noticed but you are DEAD ON, they were making the music and dressing all of that at least 2 to 3 years before Madonna. Its ok though, most artist take influence from others but its always one who takes it and explodes it.
superman21980 3 years ago 2
WOW....you ARE "dead on"! Madonna's "lucky star" and "borderline" video's borrow heavily from the wardrobe AND dance steps. Great observation. I still love Shalamar.
