Malik Jubal -You got to hear him perform this song on Saturday Night Live back in the 70's. Richard Pryor was the guest host and insisted on having Gil on to perform Johannesburg, which Pryor had heard Gil do in a small club in L.A. Richard was blown away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mind you, this was before the coming urest in Africa. Gil was way ahead of his time! I got to work as Gil's MC/Comedian on a show with he and Shirley Murdock. Malik Jubal
This pioneering genius was generations ahead of his time. He was the lineal descendant of the protest composers of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, as well as the predecessor of rap and hip-hop. His tragedy was that he was an artist as opposed to a commercial spectacle. His protests were prescient not just in that Mandela was still imprisoned, and the struggle was to come. Fascists demand I.D. or papers in ghettoes, Soweto, or even Arizona. The comments of bigots here are simply sad and pathetic.
Accidentally hit the dislike button, my bad. I miss Gil and was glad to have seen him once. You live on in out thoughts, words and revolutionary deeds my brother!
It's really too bad, NOBODY writes like this for the cause anymore. Very glad I had the opportunity to have this music back in the 60['s & 70's. We have just as many problems in the world today & no one writes & sings for the cause it seems anymore and if they do COMMERCIAL RADIO DOES'NT PLAY IT. THAT'S why I quit the bysiness. Now all I listen to is satilite radio.

yes brother south africa is great now that the coons have taken charge, like a little slice of heave, same as what happened to Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. Everywhere the black man goes things just get better, don't they?
This and 'Winter in America' are two of the best records ever. I remember Dave Cash was 'brave' enough to play this, when he was on Capital Radio in 1975. Pax to all fron 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.
great song from a great man. but, brother, please don't play in israel. Please don't support the apartheid, settler, racist state. please don't let them use you to legitimise the horrors they inflict on our palestinians brothers and sisters!!!
This still brings a smile to my face, after we took over our campus building to fight against for divestment and the police tried to stop us, but we keep coming, am surprise that some didn't get shot because we fought like HELL and we would shout JOHANNESBURGE.... Detroit, New York, L.A like JOHANNESBURGE, LET ME SEE YOUR ID. That was the proudest time in my life, I tell my class about this, and when I went there, people didn't know about Blk people doing this in struggle

Gill Scott Heron should have been playing at that World Cup concert in Johannesburg last night not pop dirt like the Black Eyed Peas

@crustyjuggler83
Gil SH could have played with that brilliant group from Mali at the W Cup concert. That would have rocked!
