  • love this song paddy does it best

  • Some man to sing a tune

  • Comment removed

  • This song reminds me of my dear departed Da

  • Not as good as the dubs and Luke, but that's an impossible standard.

  • @rebkev01 Paddy has sung with the Dubs off and on since the 1960's. He was a

good friend of Luke's. He is a wonderful singer and many of us expect him to be singing until he is at least 110. (If you have heard his intro to Step it Out, Mary you know what I am talking about.)

  • I love Paddy Reilly. His voice is magnificent.

  • Wat een geweldige zanger!

  • god bless derry

  • paddy sings the best version god bless ireland

  • left ireland twelve years ago, live in US now. these songs bring me back. it is only when you leave is when you appreciate the music

  • have got the complete concert on vhs ,it really is fantastic. Personal favourite is The Rose Of Allandale which he sings in this concert later on. Fantastic singer, believe he is now retired and living in new york after the death of his wife ?

  • @gerryg1967 that's sad. Doesn't he have a pub there in NewYork?

  • Great Chanter

  • GEWOON GEWELDIG DEZE SONG LEREN KENNEN OP EEN VRIENDEN BEZOEK IN Nd-IERLAND. WAT EEN STEM .

  • perfect. what a voice.

  • I've heard this so many times - many good versions of it - but this is the best.

  • bravo, "That calls for a Carlsberg"... best beer in the world :o)

  • Find,,`It,..Here'`,Now'.'

    Just,."Copy`',&,',Paste.",

  • reminds me of derry everytime i hear it,good day's and bad one's also.thank god it's back to how it used to be.

  • cette chanson est simplement superbe et superbement chanter...

  • FIRST CLASS PADDY REILLY

  • Fantastic singer.... he is soooooo good, with the best voice...regards from Denmark, "That calls for a Carlsberg"

  • @creamy4070 svar jeg er også dansk og kan se både på din ølsmag og din musiksmag at du ingen smag har.

Carlsberg er simpelt industriøl og Luke Kelly synger denne mange gange bedre end copisten Paddy Reilly.

Sorry folks that man has no taste both Carlsberg and Paddy Reilly are lower class than brewed beer and Luke Kelly

  • Love this xxx

  • ghod bless him

  • I was talking to him today

  • i love this song! gives me memories of good times <3

  • Paddy is an incredible singer.

  • Written By Phil Coulter this is a great track. A lot of people think it a rebel song but that is far from the case. It is about growing up, it is about life, family, love, and passion. It is about how things can change not always for the best, yet it looks to the future and is a song of hope. Whilst wriiten during the troubles it looks to the days when the troubles end .. it looks forward to where there is peace .. today.

  • Sweet, Eamon Cambell is there also!

  • what a voice,,,what a song,,,makes me cry every time!

  • well done, well done... brings you to tears

  • pure quality. what a song and singer

  • Done well, same tune as THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATILDA< AUSSIE WW1 SONG

  • fukn best version of them all!

  • Flawless live performer

  • @gurranes1 listen to him sing "fields of athenry" ... Tanx for posting!!

  • Yep Derry , drop the London!! Listen to him sing fields of athenry...

  • Wow what a voice this guy has

  • a gd old irish tune

  • this song has to touch everyone person and make them feel something, catholic or protestant, it makes me think of my irish roots from the town of derry, not londonderry

  • @queenseleven1690 There is no London in Derry and a third of you're beloved ulster is in the republic.

  • Im encouraged by the dialogue here, glasgow man myself. My wee tuppence worth is that all that shites in the past, I very much agree with majesticscot in that your family conditions you. I lived in Ireland as a Scot and now I cant talk to my family in Glasgow because they are sectarian bigots. Its over, people just want to make a life for themselves. Im encouraged that my generation (irish/catholic/protestants/whatever) dont give a toss.Hatred is a one way street

  • @queenseleven1690 what was" the city of derry "before 1698 ASE WHOLW!!!!!!!

  • @queenseleven1690 , People respect your right to hold whatever beliefs you hold. Why not return the compliment? The world has enough jingoistic slogans and petty hatreds, why not use the gift of life you've been given to do some good. Then, lying in your bed many years from now about to die you might think, 'Yeh, the world was a better place for me being in it?'

  • i feel so good about this song. rawk on

  • I am sad we things have taken a sectarian turn here can’t you just enjoy a song without starting a fight. My Grandfather who is Scottish like me served in the Black and Tans and had a pic of King Billy on his chest after his tours of Ireland he came back and drank with an Irish Catholic Priest and sent my mum who was bitter to clean the chapel when he needed a cleaner.

  • Sadly, my mother died full of hate. I myself am as much a victim of the troubles because I was brought up to hate Catholics by my mother I do not now that would be crazy as I am a Liberal Catholic Priest. However, I am a Scots nationalist I. Mistakes have been make great big ones let the miricle of forgiveness enter our hearts. This doesnt mean we should have English Government only look for a political solution

  • paddy reillys a legend

  • Bandwagon, the man who killed Harvey Milk was a coward!

  • Comment removed

  • Paddy Reilly was my late fathers favorite ballad singer and the reason I learned the guitar so I could play this and "Athenry" for my Dad which I'm proud to say I did before he passed away.

  • The man who killed Harvey Milk was listening to this song when he committed suicide. It shows both the impact of a global world and (more importantly) the power of music.

  • nt heard this for ages good song

  • what a song

  • Was this during his time with the Dubliners? Because that guy to his left is Eamonn Campbell but I don't see the rest of the boys.

  • @SGRollingStone he was never with the dubliners..played with them but was never with them. paddy reilly stands alone as irelands greatest ever singers..people see videos on here of paddy with the dubliners and then comment when paddy left or joined the dubliners. there ignorance is starting to wind me up like the fool who thought this song was about dublin because the dubliners sang it... i ask him about the lyric " there was music there in the derry air" got no response from the ignorant fool

  • he has a great voice. So personal :)

  • great song irish folk music

  • Blacky1888. Try listening to Luke Kelly.

  • Eerie song when you know this is the one Dan White (murderer of Harvey Milk) listened to when he killed himself.

  • It's like this song was composed just for Paddy to sing and Paddy was born just to sing this song. Absolutely beautiful. What a song and what voice.

  • what can i say but best track ever

  • I've played this song on the jukeboxes in The Bronx, South Philly, Washington DC, Suburbs of Virginia, all over Florida, up and down the coast of California and many other places....and it has always been welcomed the same way...with opened arms....UP THE RA!!

  • His is great song and i like paddy very much as a singer

  • This is beautiful. Dan White, assasin of Harvey Milk, committed suicide to this song.

  • A Beutiful rendition of a beautiful song.

  • A true love of Ireland in the lyric's about his home city of Derry by Phil Coulter...

  • the greatest of all. me son will get his name

  • I suppose every person has their "town they loved so well" and those wonderful childhood memories. My town was Adairville, KY. and the memory is the Quarter, yes just a Quarter! that my Dad gave me on Saturday night. He and I would go to the movie (picture show) that took 9 cents of my Quarter, but Daddy always paid for the pop corn. Thanks, Irishand, for posting, Paddy Reilly always makes my day better.

  • The best Irish ballad singer EVER hands down.. I love you PADDY REILLY thank you.

  • Great it is.

  • IrishandFolkmusic, Thank you for posting this. I am a 40 year old male who may be a bit young to have seen Paddy in his prime, but his voice hasn't lost a step over the years. His voice is so rich and beautiful. I love ALL his songs. Really enjoy his version of CLARE TO HERE. Thanks again!!!

    GO IRELAND!!!

  • I am not even slightly Irish but I was on a union delegation to West Belfast in the days of the tanks and guns in the long ago.

We may not like Tony Blair but this horror was ended on his watch with the help of Mo Molam .

So for her sake and because actulally it is rht rght thing to do in a difficult world vote Labout on 6 May.

  • I love Paddy Reilly. If you like this check out FIELDS OF ATHENRY. Beautiful.

  • your trying to make me cry!!!!

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • bullia` fir padraig

  • I 've never herd it before . It is beautyful song absolutely unknown in Poland

  • I went the first time in Ireland in 1976 and this song was played every night in most pubs. Then, my friend and I fell in love with the song. However while I didn't know who performed it the best, I went to a Dublin record shop and the guy sold me a Paddy Reilly album called "The Twon I Loved so Well". It has never been released on CD but you can find it in eBay.

  • i have read on previous songs by the famous Paddy Reilly what a voice and man! he is running a few bars in New York!!

  • true, he is!

  • DAN WHITE LOVED THIS SONG!

  • Hard to imagine how dan white died but it must have been pretty god damn intense. Eyes watered up, slowly being put to sleep by carbon monoxide gas filling up his cars interior, this song playing on cassette tape. Remembering the gun, his wife, his family. Wondering if heaven had a place for him, as a catholic I'd assume he would be told there wouldn't be one for those who commit suicide. But he had been dead for several years at this point, it was more like a burial I'd call it.

  • @AMpufnstuf Now that is TO DEEP....

  • Where has Paddy gone. Is he retired.

  • i miss ireland and scotland... this song makes me think of my memories from these lovely countries.

  • Mr Denis McCormick,,,,, this is your tune , to the best papa everrrrrrrrrr x

  • The brilliant Paddy Reilly singing excellently as usual

  • my granny loved this song

  • OMG! Paddy Reilly is THE best singer in the world ever and this song just says it all. All my memories of being an irish descendant spendong every Summer over there - this song is fantastic thank you x

  • @Lettie1971 awsome

  • "On October 21, 1985, less than two years after his release from prison, White committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage by running a garden hose from the exhaust pipe to the inside of his car. White had been listening to a recording of Paddy Reilly's rendition of "The Town I Loved So Well" on the car's cassette player. White's body was discovered by his brother, Thomas, shortly before 2 p.m. the same day."

  • thats why i looked it up too, puts a real creepy spin on it

  • Dan White the guy who assassinated harvey milk and former mayor george moscone was listining to this song in his garage when he commited suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in the 80's

  • For real? How do you know that?

  • it was on his profile on wikipedia

  • Scorn not his simplicty is also very nice, but the best version is singin by Luke Kelly, Paddy sings it also nice.

  • 10/10

    Many Thanks

  • Best version of this song there will ever be

  • hes brillant my ma use 2 listen to him wen i was a kid dubliners version top class too

  • @Blacky1888

Check out Pierre Bensusan's version on "Pres de Paris" (my personal favorite version)

  • @Blacky1888 Best version of this song there ever could be.

  • @Blacky1888 Come on Luke Kelly sang it better!! Kelly had better tone and timbre to his voice, and more power. Paddy Reilly sings through his nose. Don't get me wrong, he's still great, but Kelly was much better. The only pity is that Kelly never sang this as a young man, when his voice was at it's brilliant best

  • Nothing takes me back like Paddy!

  • Simply supreme,performance !

  • great version of this song by paddy. luke kelly and ronnie drew also do great versions of this song

    long live the dubliners

  • The greatest version of this great song.

    Bravo Paddy.

And Bravo Derry surviving and coming out with your spirit intact.

'Though we'll not forget, still our hearts are set on tomorrow and peace once again.''

  • Possibly the best ballad ever written.

  • I agree, this is simply the best.

  • Paddy's voice is wonderful.

  • Dan White killed himself to this song.

  • love this, my fave song of all time and always brings a tear to my eye

  • I love Paddy's voice.

  • Let's hope that the trouble in the North comes to an end before too long.

  • although im a big fan of the dubliners for 47 years and it hurts me to say this but imo paddy reilly sings this song better than luke kelly ,go easy on me luke kelly fans as its only my opinion

  • especially for my daughter jane who we agree to differ

  • Thanks for the request, but we'll still agree to disagree

  • Loved this song ever since my dad played it when i was a nipper - fantastic voice and moving words

  • The Best !!!!

  • Fantastic song by the great Paddy Reilly !

    Norfolk

    UK female 59

  • Nice to know a Norfolk lady likes GOOD music!!

  • Too right. Paddy Reilly is a wonderful singer, and being Irish makes him very special !

  • love this song ,paddy was the best ,great voice,

  • youve got me worried talking in the past tense , still is the best i hope

  • Best version of a great song

  • The argument continues as to whether Paddy or Luke sang the better version. I think it depends on whether you prefer the higher voice or the deeper voice.

  • They are both fantastic versions and I don't think you can prefer one or the other , really brilliant !

    Norfolk UK lady 59.

  • What a performance , love it , got to say thanks , just watched your collection of Paddy Reilly videos , every one a true gem .

  • the best virsion of this song iv ever heard, paddy reilly, what a leagend

  • virsion? iv? leagend? What has happened to our educational system?!

  • It passed away when keyboards were invented

  • where irish, we never had an educational system!!

  • damm straight. opressed by the English for over 400 years. They tried to make us a third world country. (basturds)

  • if theres a shower worse than the black and tans!!!

  • Is this show available on D.V.D, by any chance?

  • @AranGalactico the education system is perfect. Retards have always been around. Don't blame our great country for some idiot on Youtube.

  • paddy is a very very goog singer

  • great song he is a legend

  • Don't want to sound argumentative or anything, but I said it waqs a love song due to the title.

  • beautiful song--also rings a historic milestone: dan white, assassinater of San Francisco supervisor harvey milk and former SF mayor george moscone, committed suicide listening to this song...his love for SF led him to an unforgivable crime

  • love this song, great voice paddy reilly the best

  • So beautiful and lovely.

  • Amazing, as only Paddy Reilly could be.

  • It's actually a love song, directed at a town. It's not a rebel song.

  • I have already cleared everything with IrishandFolkmusic. My statement was due to the fact that I heard a lot of irish songs of Wolfe Tones and based upon the lyrics of this song which I read and understood wery well I classed it in my mind as Rebel Song . However if you don't consider as irish this song in the same way I accept your explanations; there is no problemt ! The real thing is that I love this song, theyr lyrics and the way it is sung by Paddy Reilly (from Dubliners?).

  • The funny, thing but not too much, is that I heard for the first time this song when I was in Brittany (France) in 1998 and I bought a CD of a local Breton Group who was playing in the street of Concarneau. Then I became a fan of breton/celtic music and irish music too (including the so called Rebel Songs like this)

  • This is a milllllion miles off a rebel song this is like a millllion % not rebel.

  • @IrishandFolkmusic Very true. I hate when people call it a rebel song, it's a love song.

  • two people can only sing this song and paddy reilly is one of them and luke kelly the second

  • Second only to Luke, I think.

  • hav this concert on LP, fcukn brill, thanx for uploadn, brankie, ireland

  • U are very lucky, he's a wonderful singer, this is so beautiful.
