I saw the Broadway tour of this at the Pantages theatre in L.A. I don't know HOW they do it, but some of the tech they can do is ASTOUNDING! Definitely Broadway magic! Rather than smoke, they had him float up into the air perfectly visible and spin around at high speed, and somehow when he landed he had removed the Beast stuff, even though we could all see him for the most part the whole time! It's truly amazing. I LOVE Broadway :)
i played beast in my production!! how much of a relief is it to take off the prostetics and make up!!!! and then put on a long wig and saggy clothes! made me feel so light hahaha
The best I've ever seen this transformation done was when the Westend were doing this production there was no smoke, it was weird like it was exactly like they did it in the film with sparks going off and like fireworks and it actually looked like when they lifted his limp body up into the air like it was changing. It was about four years ago now and for the life of me I still can't work out how he changed. Because his body was limp right up until they put him down on the ground.
V. late comment (just viewed your clip). Up until 2:56 I was thinking that the orchestra was a professionally produced backing track, as the tuning, balance and precision is so good ... then a slightly off-key trumpet and heavy handed pianist proved that this was played live! Good work by the MD - but WHY are so many entrances mismatched to musical cues during The Battle?! I am presently BEATING my cast into recognising musical cues to time their on-stage action!
the transformation was EPIC. belle had an ok voice. so did the beast...they were just ok.
the battle was well done. the ending sucked though.
and i'm playing lumire now in b&tb....the lumiere here is HORRIBLE...omg he's so bad. that accent is all wrong. all the french words were BUTCHERED. AHHHHH!!!!!
and babette was alright...her accent sucked too.
mrs. potts and chip were AMAZING and so was the wardrobe...and Lefou!
WOW!! Great Gaston, Belle, and Beast!! The Belle in here is probably the best one I've ever seen, and the Beast has such a low voice (while I've heard other Beasts that was on the borderline of alto).
wow! where was this show at?! and i was wondering if you could tell me how the transformation was done, we're doing the show and so far we like your idea most. fantastic job!
I get to this on tour in 2010 with my mother and I got the front row! It'll be great! I loved Beauty and the Beast ever since I was a little kid I saw it in Disney World and then I saw the Broadway version followed by other productions many times! I cried everytime I used to watch the movie when the Beast changed back into the Prince it was so beautiful I feel lke crying right now! I was in a local production as M. D'Arque and the Narrarator! I miss those times!
I was in this show just a couple weeks ago for our community theatre. I was Belle and it was so much fun...this scene was so realistic we had people actually crying in the audience.
This lighting is terrible!

The whole cast is great! I especially like the people who played LeFou and Babette. No one appreciates the secondary leads.

When I saw it the best flew in the air and they did a magic trick and changed him back. I was just a child and I believed it was real magic.

Interesting. Def. a well concealed switch. Not necessarily the way I'd go with it but it was very good. Great job. And that set was AMAZING.
