  • Played this all of the time I was a weekend DJ in Lansing, MI. while attending Michigan State from 1968-1972. One of the greatest bands that never caught a break but should have. Great songs from Chicago's best band ever (sorry New Colony Six, another favorite).

  • From NJ,went to college in Michigan, where I met my first love......she was from Joliet and had this single......needless to say I love the song and , after 45 years, still think of her when I hear it......

  • My favorite pop song of all time (yes even over the Fab Four who I adored along with the multitudes). Great memories of carefree summer days and nights filled with friends and teen style "romance." Thanks for posting.

  • P.S. All those guys are personal friends of mine and photo albums can be found on Facebook under AIRSHOTS Photography photo fab.

  • @airshotsphotoco Isn’t the lead singer related to the “Duties” from Northlake, IL. At least that is what Kevin told me years ago after I seen the band at the Thirsty Whale back in the mid seventies.

  • rin3, There is a British band that was out at the same time called the Cryin' Shames, not to be confused with the Chicago band the CRYAN' SHAMES.

  • ALSO, James Fairs who wrote that song has moved back to Chicago and has played a few gigs.

  • There is a second Jimy Rogers Memorial show April 2, 2011 at Reggie's at 2109 S. State St. in Chicago. The Cryan' Shames, New Colony Six, and many others will be performing.

  • The Cryan' Shames are still together and play the Chicago area summer festivals. J.C. Hooke is the only original member but Toad (Tom Doody) comes in from California and sings with the band again when he can. Same for The New Colony Six. Ray Graffia Jr. is the original member. Jimy Sohns (Shadows Of Knight) is still doing shows. The Buckinghams are still touring with original members Carl and Nick. We did lose Jimy Rogers ( The Mauds, Flash, and Blue Road ) last December to cancer.

  • It is a "cryin' shame" that this group never had a Top 40 hit. This song is from 1967 and reached only #85, as did 3 of their 5 single releases.

  • ugh

  • One of those great bands from the windy city. The Bickinghams,New Colony Six,American Breed ,The Shadows of Night, and of course The Windy City Seven:CHICAGO:All of them had a couple things in common Great Harmonies and super production...

  • One of my favorite pop tunes.

I believe the writer was inspired by "Good Vibrations" and wanted to write something more challenging than he had been.

  • Loved these guys so much...:)

  • Amazing! Love it!

  • Wow...cool!! : )

  • TO GREATWHITE2 - your good wishes are appreciated. YES, everything turned out alright. I now have a loving husband & 2 beautiful children who are NOT abused in any way, but rather are treasured. My hubby was a drummer in a for-fun-only garage band; he's very impressed with the percussion on this gorgeous song. I agree with Wolfsky9 - this deserved to be an international monster hit. Maybe YouTube viewers will find it & provide over-due attention. Peace & Love to All in 2010 and beyond!

  • Best I can remember, "The Cryan Shames" was the first live music I saw. I saw them every time they played there until they disbanded.

  • @aliceanthony100---I remember that well! I always stop right where they laugh to listen for it--It's ingrained in my memory!

  • the beat goes on and on this was a good beat

  • A vocal masterpiece by an all-time underrated band; could these guys sing! Fall, '67, I 1st heard this, & was just speechless. Wolfsky9

  • This is the DREAMIEST song I ever heard. My childhood and teenage home was not pleasant (filled with violence), but refuge was to be found on the radio with truly comforting songs like this. THANKS SOOOO MUCH CRYAN' SHAMES. I just went on Ebay and bought a copy of this single just for the fun of having it in the 45 rpm version. Peace & Love.

  • @mjcamck71 Hopefully everything turned out alright...life has a way of making one feel real good!!!! :)

  • @GREATWHITE2 Thank you for your good wishes. Yes, all turned out well. I posted a complete reply on the comments page. Peace & Love.

  • @GREATWHITE2 - thank you for your kind reply. YES, everything turned out fine - loving husband, 2 beautiful children. Today, I run support groups for adults abused as children. I tell them to use 60's tunes as music therapy like I did. Peace & Love ALL.

  • I'm from southern Illinois and had no clue that these guys were from Chicago. My brother had an album of the Cryan Shames, and I fell in love with Toad, and the music.

  • @jadegreenkaty I had no idea they were from the Claredon Hills area which is in my neighborhood. Great band always liked their music.

  • the cyran shames were the best band to ever come out of chicago. i should know ken harck/off broadway . love you guys!

  • @harck1 I agree and thanks for the note you sent me about Sugar and Spice. They really were and still are great!

  • @arielopeal, me too. Thanks for posting this song.

  • If you ever wondered what was the best era of music, listen to this song. This is one of the greatest songs ever made. I agree with rms0916; they never caught a break although they made great music. I saw them live twice and what a show they put on.

  • does anyone remember the laughing version of this song? toward the end of the song the group forgets to jump in with the refrain...there's a delay...then laughter...then the song continues....

  • @aliceanthony100 yep i do. it was 4am in the morning and we were mixing the song. isaac had a girl in the studio. they were giggling. the recording engineer opened a mic and recorded it. it became part of the song.

    toad

  • @aliceanthony100 The album version (with the 'break' then the bell and the laughing) is on the Sundazed cd of 'A Scratch In The Sky.' Unfortunately, the cd is out of print and very expensive. I am thinking of posting it, though!

  • @bze2nlz1 Please do it!!!

  • This album has to be one of the best ever produced. It rivals "pet sounds" by the beach boys. When I was about 12 I took music lessons at the carvor school of music in hisdale. My teacher was a older women who used to tell me that the guys from the CS jamed there. Can someone confirm that???

  • other than the byrds? they were the best band in america back then. we should be proud they were from chicago. best , ken harck from "off broadway"

  • these guy were the beatles of america. i grew up musically because of them . my favorite band ever! best ,ken harck from " off broadway"

  • This song can best be described as "dreamy" and so optimistic. It takes me back to a time when we all were so hopeful for more meaningful personal relationships and a more civilized society. I can, and do, still have hope for it. Peace and Love in 2010 and beyond to the surviving Cryan' Shames, their fans, and everyone else.

  • Hey ~ Does anyone remember seeing them at the Blue Village in Westmont back in '69??? I was there too...remember me? miss tho daze....

  • @momswatchin You are correct sir. Back in the day those of us in Downers Grove (North High Trojans) loved the Cryan Shames.

  • One of the very best late 60's ballads, & it should have been a monster hit. Sung beautifully. Wolfsky9

  • you are so right... one of the best bands who never really got a big break

  • I seen them at a place called "The Sound Lounge" in Mt. Pleasant, Mi.. ?Friends saw their last concert at William Rainey Randhurst Community College, Palatine Ill.

  • I lived in Lansing, MI and went to the Sound Lounge a couple of times. It was a great place. I had forgotten all about it until I saw your posting.

  • At one time the Sound Lounge was in the old Kroger store down town, then moved out on the hi-way..That was a lot bigger.

  • Every Friday after school, I had my allowance, went to Woolworths and got the Silver Dollar Survey that WLS put out, and bought whatever I could afford!

  • i have all of their original lp's on vinyl, all of their stuff is available on cd try amazon

  • AWESOME ! ! !

    thanks for posting

    GGG 59

  • An amazingly good song from one of the best groups from the 60's They deserved much better recognition then they got

  • I will second that.

  • They also made a song called.....greensburg, glickstein, charles david smith and jones. Would love to find that

  • what a flood of memories from the great 60's while living in Chicago. I think that I wore this song out playing it on my 45 rpm record player.

    Thanks

  • A beautiful song that provides wonderful memories from my high school days!

  • I think it's safe to say that this was heavily influenced by the Spoonful's "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice."

  • You got that right!! My favs were Baltimore Oriole, Symphony of the Wind and a Masters' Fool. Synthesis RULED!!!!!!!

  • Jim Fairs also wrote,Loreli,Last train

to Calif, and A town I'd like to go back to. They got a raw deal from the people

    at Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

They didn't like Jim Pilster's steel

hook and wouldn't let them perform on the

show after traveling from Chicago to N.Y

  • They were the Beatles of the midwest. They were ahead of their times. Just an excellent band. thanks....

  • one of my favorite songs from a very underrated band - those glorious 60's

  • Brings back so many wonderful memories from a innocent time gone by.

  • Yeah its amazing!!
