I was at Harvard in the early 90s and cannot tell you how depressing this all is to hear. I remember the Starbucks muscling Coffee Connection and hate hearing what I knew even then was inevitable.
Every PC I have ever used has sucked beyond words. They crashed constantly, and are like a fucking billboard with their constant pop-ups asking me if I want to upgrade this and that. Eventually they got slow to the point of being unusable, or simply would never boot up. I've been using a Mac for 2 years now and can count on one hand how many times it has crashed. No pop-ups, no bullshit, and without using any anti-virus software.
@sventoby Let's see, I routinely cleared my temp files, ran the defragmentation, used the anti-virus software, etc, etc, and now I have 3 useless towers collecting dust. I constantly hear similar stories from many other people. If you pay $1k for a computer, the thing should work. PC's are a scam, and they've got everyone by the balls. They have Windows for Mac so that you can send Word files and things like that so they can view them on their shitty PC's.
Well it can't just be a coincidence that you've had constant problems with an operating system that's worked fine for me and many others. Also Macs are PC's, PC just means personal computer (which a Mac is).
@jonathan401 Actually, Apple is a bullshit corporation that tries to take away their customer's rights and those idiots fall for it because they are getting more convenience in its stead. That's what today's stupid dipshit consumers need more of: convenience. Microsoft is horrible too, but at least there you can circumvent the problem via piracy.
I love how he was bitching about Microsoft being second rate to Apple's "superior software" at the beginning and then bitching about iTunes at the end. Oh, the hypocrisy.
Could have been 2 different guys, they all sound basically the same, but still.
microsoft is easier to run. but overall performance apple/mac destroys microsoft. but everyone was raised on microsoft (outside of school) so thats what they know. you dont even need an antivirus on MACs because 98% of viruses are written for microsoft products
Ironic how he criticizes surveillance methods whilst he proudly displays an iphone which tracks and records where he is at all times even when it's off. Also praising apple software and then bashing Itunes.I love Louie so much , but this one was strange :).
It's weird how Louis goes within minutes from praising Apple software to pointing out how wrong the whole iTunes racket is. There's your visionary genius Steve Jobs right there.
That whole idea about people getting excited when the phone knows where they were at all times and all the messages being stored really is ridiculous, how are people not upset by that? That's why I really don't like talking to people over the internet about important things. And now with Google's new technology they can even scan your emails to place ads you might like near the websites you visit. This creeps no one out?
Who knows, this was from a year ago. maybe Louis has since read about Foxconn etc and learned more about the company and changed or evolved his personal or comedic opinion on Apple, or maybe not. Hey we wouldn't be sure unless we asked him.
Who knows, this was from a year ago. maybe Louis has since read about Foxconn etc and learned more about the company and changed or evolved his personal or comedic opinion on Apple, or maybe not. Hey we wouldn't be sure unless we asked him.
@ClintKantorChannel Foxconn is the world's largest electronics manufacturer. They make products for Microsoft, Sony, Google, Nintendo, HP, Dell, and so on. They're some offshoot of Apple. It's not like Apple's CEO can make a phone call and change the entire Chinese business model. That people are so bewildered over his Apple praise is hilarious.
It's a little contradictory what they're saying: first they say apple is the nice mom and pop software that gets destroyed by big bad ms - and then in the end itunes becomes the most vicious software on the planet. So Apple wasn't that nice after all, huh?
And that is exactly how it is: apple pretends to be that cool and green brand, but actually they're a capitalist monster worse than their competitors. Ask the workers at foxconn...
@highks Foxconn makes products for every major computer company, not just Apple. They're the largest electronics producer in the world. You're just some goofy Apple-hater who hates anything that's popular and needs to use phrases like "capitalist monster" because you don't actually have any real points to offer.
The real story is Bill Gates thought people would rather have computers at a cheaper price, and Steve Jobs thought people would rather pay more to have a higher quality. Bill was right so he prevailed. I'm glad it panned out that way, cause Bill is a much more inspirational person that Steve ever was or would have been if things were different. Read into the behind the scenes, you'll see what I'm talking about
@STLShu That's not at all how it happened. Bill Gates got lucky due to a deal with IBM that put MS-DOS on every PC-compatible computer. Then Microsoft took advantage of a cross-licensing GUI deal with Apple that was originally intended for the Mac version of Office and secretly used it to create Windows. In the 90s, Microsoft was caught stealing Quicktime code, and that's why they bought non-voting shares in 1998.
All the enraged Microsoft fans posting to this video are absolutely hilarious.
@STLShu As for "behind the scenes", Bill Gates was known to shout profanities and people and tell them their work was "shit". He lied on the stand about Internet Explorer being intimately tied to Windows 98. To act like he's some inspirational person just because he started a charity is absolutely hilarious.
Louis is 9934732094823% right. Use to be a nice local coffee spot. Lasted a few years, I drove by one day and saw a dunkin fucking donuts. There is no great local spots anymore, they all just went right out. I just make coffee at home, better anyway, fuck em and their shitty coffee
On Louis CK's comment about Beta still being used: The Beta format that was/is used professionally is different from the consumer format that was around in the 80s. Nowadays they're all probably moving to digital capture/storage via HD digital cameras and such.
It's High Fidelity. Who would've bought the Beta Band without the small shop guy playing them. Sadly, what they don't discuss is their own industry. Radio and music are F'd because they regurgitate playlists pay for play bubblegum crap.
Just like O Henry versus Mr. Big!!! O Henry is clearly the superior chocolate bar, (nuts, caramel, good solid subway snack) but Mr. Big (which is pure crap) is always higher on the candy rack and always has some bullshit promotion on the wrapper.
@bonchbonch People who run the same Windows and Mac apps side by side each day like I do? Yeah, Windows apps frequently out perform Mac apps (hardware is usually the difference) and cost a hell of a lot less. What did you update Facebook with Safari and then IE to feel qualified to make your comment?
I expect Louis CK not to know any better, he's a comedian trying to make the "liberal"
Apple point here. But I expect more from what are usually tech savvy trolls.
@ccrosbie33 No, Mac apps routinely outperform the Windows equivalents, especially Adobe's Creative Suite. You can stick to Facebook on IE or whatever, though.
@bonchbonch Based on what? What hardware against what and which apps? Photoshop can be as clunky on a Mac as on a PC and I see it everyday. Say what you want, but that's reality.
@ccrosbie33 You're conflating Microsoft software and applications for Windows - do you really not understand the difference? Wintel is the most widely used platform so more people develop for it. Name one M$ application better than its Apple competitor.
Wait, MS's actual software is worse than Apple's? And Bill Gates is a more vicious capitalist than Steve Jobs was? Bill Gates, the guy who runs a gigantic charity and encourages others to donate, is more vicious than Steve Jobs, who never gave a cent to charity and who ripped off even his own business partner (Wozniak)? CK's a very funny guy, but he has no idea what he's talking about here.
@TheRichardHinckley You really should look at gates "Charity" it's like a charity that benefits him and his. Look it up. I'm not saying Apple is any better than Microsoft. What I think CK was saying is, Apple "WAS" based on doing things better and not only about money. Now, they are just about money, like everyone else.
@TheRichardHinckley Philanthropy is irrelevant to Louie's argument, which I don't completely agree with. But to say he doesn't know what he's talking about is equally wrong. Louie believes in limited capitalism, and he lays out a pretty sound explanation. His values are simply different than yours. But, yeah, Bill Gates giving his money away has nothing to do with aggressiveness as a businessman.
@TheRichardHinckley well, maybe you are too young to know but he's talking about earlier times. way before Apple became so popular. MS actually did kill a lot of It's competitors in a very vicious way. plus, what Gates foundation is doing is more of a investment than a charity. he just got a incredible PR machines that's making it look like he is a 'saint' so what I'm trying to say is that don't be fooled by what they say on TV.
@Daydream2142 I'm older than Windows, so it's not that I don't remember what MS was like back then. Gates' charitable organization is not an investment. An investment is something where you spend money and expect to get even more money back from it. Gates was a vicious businessman when he was younger, and he's a charitable retiree now. Sometimes people see things over time and it changes them.
@TheRichardHinckley So instead of doing your own search you decided to bother me with another comment. ok. Bill Gates agriculture program involves Monsanto's GMO crop which is designed to kill itself so farmers would have to buy seeds again each year. also you can ONLY use their fertilizer to grow GMO crops. It drove thousands of farmers in US into bankruptcy and also suicide in some cases. GMO food is banned in many EU countries for possible health hazard. I'm out of charac
@Daydream2142 I am aware of the terminator gene stuff, which sounds awesomely evil and actually is pretty nasty. I am also aware of his half-million shares of the company. That said, to say that he's not actually trying to do good, or that this is his idea of how to make money for himself, is unsupported.
@TheRichardHinckley Yes, unsupported by dumb consumers who like to idolize people that are working hard to privatize basic human needs like water, food and air If they find a way to.
@Daydream2142 Unsupported by any actual evidence. You can dislike the way he does his charity, and you can find some tinfoil-hat conspiracy theory stuff about pretty much anything. I've seen him criticized for his stance on vaccines (his stance is "they help children to survive"). I'm sure someone has some way to criticize, or at least minimize, his pledge to donate all of his wealth to charity instead of passing it to his children. People see someone do good and still find fault.
@TheRichardHinckley what is your actual evidence? CNN report? give me a break. we both know that the money he's raised is going to giant pharma and GMO companies. we are talking vaccines that Kenyan government refused to take because of deadly side effects. I'm not talking about some crazy conspiracy here. what Africa needs is their own economy, free from the harassment of West. no nation in history got rich from aids.
@Daydream2142 Africa's problems are gigantic, yeah. And there's a lot to debate about how to solve those problems. My side of this discussion doesn't require evidence, because I'm not leveling accusations at anybody. I also don't have a huge problem with "Big Medicine" or whatever because I recognize that medicine is indeed a business and that society on the whole has benefited greatly from modern medicine.
@TheRichardHinckley You might be forgetting that Microsoft has been sued on numerous occassions for underhanded business, most notably in the EU vs Microsoft case, which resulted in a 1.4 billion dollar fine for microsoft(among many other fines).
I think its fair to say that Bill Gates is the more ruthless business man of the two. Since he is obviously willing to retain information from legal courts to maintain monopoly.
@TheRichardHinckley I don't disagree with you about Microsoft vs. Apple, but I should point out that Louis CK truly believes in what he's talking about. Whether you agree with him or not, he's actually following his principles. He put his latest comedy special on his own website, forgoing Comedy Central, HBO and any other corporate interests. AND he's thinking of forgoing Ticketmaster because they're scalping his tickets.
@bonchbonch Nah, it's your personal opinion, not a known universal truth. I guess I should say "sorry if you're some guy who types 'M$' instead of 'Microsoft' a lot."
@TheRichardHinckley No, it really is a universal truth. Customer satisfaction studies prove that people absolutely hate Windows and only use it because it comes by default on every OEM PC.
@ccrosbie33 Ah, the tired old "kool-aid" remark. Yeah, with all the Microsoft fanbois posting their outrage that the beloved Windows monopoly was criticized for being as shitty as everybody knows it is, I'm the one drinking the kool-aid. Keep on using Microsoft products, slave.
@bonchbonch "Everyone knows it is?" You seem to be the only one on here taking it so personally. These Windows people are just telling it how they see it. And good use of the tired "fanbois[sic]" line. I'm sure an Apple shill like yourself hears it a lot.
When you can get more than 10% of the market and can back your performance facts up, come on back. Apple lovers are more insufferable than the Linux crowd -- at least they have valid points.
@TheRichardHinckley Take a look at what Bill did with his pricing plan on copies of Windows for things like Dell versus people making their own computers. When Dell gets Windows for 5 dollars and a home made computer gets Windows for 200... it single-handedly killed the market for people making computers from parts. No one can compete with $195 overhead competition.
@gameshowmatt I know, I remember that. Of course, you could use a non-Windows OS. If you were building from parts, you could probably still have matched Dell's price but with better hardware if you really knew what you were doing with building computers, which, back in the late 1990s, I did. But yeah, it was a shrewd business move and benefited Dell and MS and was not really bad for the mainstream consumer who wanted Windows and pre-made computer.
@skillz139 Some people are actually good people. And some people aren't 100% good people all the time, but they sometimes do good things simply because it's what they believe is right.
Yes, Gates is a more vicious capitalist. Just 'cause he chilled out after getting married + his dad rode his ass to give away some cash (like he'll ever feel it) doesn't make him less so. Many of the greatest robber barons were also huge philanthropists.
Jobs stole ideas but wasn't nearly as shady strong-arming partners + buying out competitors. He was a megalomaniacal control freak but that doesn't necessarily make him a more ruthless capitalist.
@copyvio You know Jobs actually ripped off Wozniak, right? Wozniak being the guy who did the actual work and all. But anyway, I'm not saying Gates was not also a vicious capitalist. I do wonder where you draw the line between "vicious capitalist" and "guy who is good at running a company and making profit."

"Apple>Microsoft" Gtfo. Apple is garbage. Consider this : Linux>PC>Mac That's the chain. Picture the human centipede, Source code is put in Linux, then shit in to PC's Mouth, which is then shit in to Apple's mouth, which is then shit on to the consumers.
I vote everyone shut the fuck up about Apple v. Microsoft. You're all so busy maniacally arguing that you are missing the bigger humor that is corporate America.
@TheRouterDotNet so true man. If you stop to think about it, the concept of facebook is absolutely crazy! You share all your personal information and details and private momentsof yourself and your family with 3.000 strangers, your refer to as "friends". Nobody's is thinking about privacy anymore. People are completly submerged in this lunacy.
Was getting into this until they started comparing Microsoft and Apple. Now I just realise that the problem they're tring to identify, they're just another part of it.
Oh ffs, I cannot stand Apple and their overpriced bullshit.
I hate dealing with their customer "service" and selling consumers their products. (I work at Radioshack, unfortunately.) I try showing them other Smartphones, that do just as much and can preform better, but of fucking course, they want the damn Apple logo on it.
I hate mom and pop stores. I just want to get my shit and get the fuck out. I prefer to my stuff on the internet anyways. I like researching before I buy it too. I want to buy the best product in the world, not the the product that the mom and pop store sells.
apple actually sucks compared to most other products. my asus which runs on windows 7 will rape, nay, apple will merely bend over and take it from my computer.
@reaperinred11 rape actually rapes compared to most other products. my rape which runs on rape 7 will rape, nay, rape will merely bend over and take it from my rape.
agree with everything except in terms of the music industry. with the internet not only do you have access to every piece of music out there, but now anyone can produce new, different music and share it with the entire world. not itunes, but the internet has made new music more accessible.
@swinglime180 That would be a good point except that if you compare the majority of music out there now to the stuff from even as recently as the early 90s it is all shit. The internet is a great advancement in terms of communication and in theory a great tool for learning but it has made most of us in to shitty human beings who have no concept of quality.
@payn0094 You're right. When Apple were tanking and Adobe dropped support for MacOS, the only major software provider selling MacOS software was Microsoft, and at a considerable loss. Had MS canned Office on the Mac, Apple wouldn't be selling desktops/laptops today.
Microsoft was going to be deemed monopoly because Apple was going under. Sooo Mr. Gates helped apple so Microsoft wouldn't be broken up! Thats what happened!
LOL MICROSOFT IS WAYYYY BETTER SOFTWARE THAN APPLE. APPLE COMPUTERS ARE MADE TO RUN MICROSOFT SOFTWARE!!!! JESUS, TYPICAL RETARD REGURGITATING SHIT YOU HEARD SOMEONE ELSE SAY. SHIT LOUIE SHIT
@MrFisherb7 Totally agree. Apple know how to package and market their products to make them seem like they're the best on the market. I'm not saying Apple products aren't any good...I'm saying most of the time their stuff isn't even the best performing product in its league. But it's always more expensive, because quite frankly all you're buying is the value of their brand.
@MrSupastar83 I agree. With apple you are getting many of the same internal hardware components (e.g. Intel, Nvidia, etc). I believe people are buying apple for the styling, brand image and warranty/support. Those are good reasons to buy a product so no one get upset. A good example of this was the early Kia vehicles; the quality was low but they came with a great warranty that the company honored. Kia is doing very well now. I prefer windows and it is better for what I do with it.
@whiteej21 That doesn't make sense. Microsoft doesn't make hardware, just software. Apple makes Hardware and Software. I am not sure what Microsoft can fix for you, beyond software issues.
@CoolKabbage Apple doesn't make hardware. It contracts lowest bidder companies to make hardware. They stifle competition and encourage repetition of old technologies. Microsoft on the other hand is applied to a hardware standard that encourages serious R&D competition ... and most importantly it creates software (and supports software developers) that create programs that continuously create new demand for better hardware. One is interested in marketing. The other the future.
I hate this kind of deluded nostalgia made by people who don't understand technology or the market. Fuck their music stores. A bunch of pretentious kids propping up the record companies that fucked over the actual artists. iTunes forever.
@SeamusLight93 You have no idea what you're talking about. Local record stores had nothing to do with artists getting screwed over. It's the big stores and huge record companies that screw artists over. Why do you think so many artists support Record Store Day?
What are you talking about? The majority of those workers will move in other sectors of the economy. Yes, productivity has gone up, and so has the overall welfare.
OMG, so many nerds fixated on PC/Mac specs showdown. It was just an example, people! Louis is talking about the homogenization of culture via the corporatization of all retail business. Talk about missing the forest for the trees.
@acb0001 It is a pretty important key point. Microsoft goes to huge lengths to support small business software engineers. That's why there is such a huge amount of software available on their operating systems. They also encourage competition between hardware companies, particularly in R&D and the best place typically to buy compatible systems is a small business. It's a big contradiction.
All these things did not dissapear, they just moved to the interet. Personal web sites, public forums, review pages, etc. There are all kinds of places for all kinds of tastes and opinions, and is a great source to find new, exciting material of any kind.
I love Louis CK but it's ironic how he describes Apple vs. MS. Apple OS 7 through 9 all the way up untill the redid the entire OS and made OS X was pure shit. I did IT support at an ad agency and I learned to hate Apple.
And now you have Apple suing everyone who dares make technology of any kind since they believe they've invented everything when infact they've not done a single original thing: All apple does is perfecting existing items.
as far as the this is how far we've come from a decent production system from louis at about 3:30. My mom works at a tailor suits store ... of an indescript name... hasn't made a profit in a long time but still makes money in the stocks somehow. so they,ve stayed in business. which is instrumentally horrible for the survival of the human race in general.
I have NEVER disagreed with Louis C.k. until now. He's blaming PC for what Mac ACTUALLY does. It's actually apple that's the shitty shiny piece of simple shit that's thrown up onto the mindless capitalist product owner who's happy with their default, gets the job done, piece of fuck "technology"
@MrFisherb7 Nah, I disagree. Apple products are high quality. They use only high quality electronic components, and in the case of the macbook pro, encase them in a reinforced aluminum uni-body frame. They also put a battery in them that lasts ~7, which is really good for a laptop with a quad-core processor and Radeon graphics card. Not saying there aren't high quality PCs, though most of what's sold isn't. Personally, I like Lenovo laptops and Linux.
@JamuelSLackson Their core hardware is usually a generation behind what's available on a PC and if you factor in an equally good case, the Apple with the same specs is twice the price.
@MrFisherb7 The computer industry is more complicated than other industries. There are different schools of thought on what makes one computer better than the other. OS X provides an easier and better experience for less tech-savvy people who just want to do basic things like surf the web, etc. Windows is more customizable, and can ultimately be more powerful in the hands of a computer expert.
excuse me ? Microsoft has a way better operating system than apple show it up your ass for all i care all apple does it overcharge for an inferior product
@whiteej21 People who cannot afford to own politicans therefore do not have access to fair competition. If you will wave a magic wand and get rid of corporate ownership of politicians via multimillion dollar lobbying efforts, but we keep immigration, and wal mart pushing out small companies, it's a deal. If immigrants can do my job cheaper than I can, they are welcome to try. We all win either way, either I keep my job and they bag my groceries, or costs go down and I must find another job.
I hate how if you want to be a little bit left wing and uneducated in computer technology you have to prefer apple to microsoft, i genuinely thought Louis CK would be clever enough to have not fallen for the ridiculous public image Apple has bought itself of being "fun, creative" etc. Basically Apple have done exactly what they are talking about in this but are still more expensive for inferior technology, WHAT is that all about!
@whiteej21 he didnt say that real competition does not always improve quality, he said only that crushing the competition by having a bigger wallet does not increase quality. That is not the definition of competition. He is right that people forfeited all these mom and pop shops by insisting on paying a few cents less, but the mom and pop shops forfeited their future by not adapting and innovating. Like many of you, they did not see that most people value savings over crappy smalltalk.
@whiteej21 wasting life? Having more free time in which to do whatever you want because you can get access to music faster and cheaper is wasting life? You don't get it. Going to a store merely because there is no better way is a waste of life compared to if there is a more time-saving way. You can still go outside and socialize, infact you have more time to do so, because of all the things you can do in an instant now.
@whiteej21 deal with them when you wish, not be forced to when all you want is to get something done. if you want to ask someone in person for music suggestions you still can, you just don't have to waste an hour tearing through some shop to do it.
Louis CK is trying to be funny, and usually he is, but he totally doesnt understand progress. Just because iTunes didnt let you sample music at the time didnt mean it was impossible. Who wants to stand in a mom and pop shop all day talking to the sales clerk for an hour when u can order ur stuff online and have it delivered without having to leave your chair. Who needs to dig through an entire "underground" record store when Amazon or Pandora will automatically suggest similar music.
Most of the reason online shopping is successful is because people don't wanna deal with some bullshit salesman who wants to shoot the shit when all they wanna do is buy their stuff.
He is way off on both counts. Beta did not make it because it was not an open standard, Sony tried to push through their slightly better but ripoff proprietary solution, so VHS won instead. Microsoft also never really directly competed with Microsoft, Apple made their money on the market segments that Microsoft could not serve very well, such as computer illiterate idiots who can only handle 2 options without exploding, video producers, and graphics designers (or some combination thereof).
I don't agree with his take on the loss of the local music store. sure they're gone, but now its much easier for the hyper-local band that has no support to record something, put it up online, and have it picked up by people who genuinely like and are searching for that kind of music. the proliferation of the internet has allowed us to listen to a wider variety of music coming from just about everywhere. though it may be harder to find now, WE found it. not the record store guy.
@o0obeautifulwaveo0o I guess...but it's not as social. It's more just surfing the web, and staring at a screen by yourself. Instead of just chilling out at a store, and talking to the folks. I don't know, I wasn't around for that era, maybe I'm just romanticizing it, but it definitely sounded pretty cool.
Louis CK (or one of his fans on here) should make (or promote) a website for independent artists called "diversity," or "diversify" since he's talking about the problems of pressures toward uniformity in limited markets.
He mentions The Tasty - the best damn greasy spoon ever - in Harvard square. Gone.

Read into the behind the scenes, you'll see what I'm talking about
STLShu 3 weeks ago
@STLShu That's not at all how it happened. Bill Gates got lucky due to a deal with IBM that put MS-DOS on every PC-compatible computer. Then Microsoft took advantage of a cross-licensing GUI deal with Apple that was originally intended for the Mac version of Office and secretly used it to create Windows. In the 90s, Microsoft was caught stealing Quicktime code, and that's why they bought non-voting shares in 1998.
All the enraged Microsoft fans posting to this video are absolutely hilarious.
bonchbonch 2 weeks ago
@STLShu As for "behind the scenes", Bill Gates was known to shout profanities and people and tell them their work was "shit". He lied on the stand about Internet Explorer being intimately tied to Windows 98. To act like he's some inspirational person just because he started a charity is absolutely hilarious.

@ccrosbie33 Windows software is a miserable joke. The Mac versions completely blow them away, and it's obvious to anyone who uses both side by side.
bonchbonch 2 weeks ago
@bonchbonch People who run the same Windows and Mac apps side by side each day like I do? Yeah, Windows apps frequently out perform Mac apps (hardware is usually the difference) and cost a hell of a lot less. What did you update Facebook with Safari and then IE to feel qualified to make your comment?
I expect Louis CK not to know any better, he's a comedian trying to make the "liberal"
Apple point here. But I expect more from what are usually tech savvy trolls.

TheRichardHinckley 1 month ago 45
@TheRichardHinckley You really should look at gates "Charity" it's like a charity that benefits him and his. Look it up. I'm not saying Apple is any better than Microsoft. What I think CK was saying is, Apple "WAS" based on doing things better and not only about money. Now, they are just about money, like everyone else.
FreeMeFromG 3 weeks ago
@TheRichardHinckley Philanthropy is irrelevant to Louie's argument, which I don't completely agree with. But to say he doesn't know what he's talking about is equally wrong. Louie believes in limited capitalism, and he lays out a pretty sound explanation. His values are simply different than yours. But, yeah, Bill Gates giving his money away has nothing to do with aggressiveness as a businessman.
tremontirocks 3 weeks ago
@TheRichardHinckley well, maybe you are too young to know but he's talking about earlier times. way before Apple became so popular. MS actually did kill a lot of It's competitors in a very vicious way. plus, what Gates foundation is doing is more of a investment than a charity. he just got a incredible PR machines that's making it look like he is a 'saint' so what I'm trying to say is that don't be fooled by what they say on TV.
Daydream2142 3 weeks ago
@Daydream2142 I'm older than Windows, so it's not that I don't remember what MS was like back then. Gates' charitable organization is not an investment. An investment is something where you spend money and expect to get even more money back from it. Gates was a vicious businessman when he was younger, and he's a charitable retiree now. Sometimes people see things over time and it changes them.

I've seen him criticized for his stance on vaccines (his stance is "they help children to survive"). I'm sure someone has some way to criticize, or at least minimize, his pledge to donate all of his wealth to charity instead of passing it to his children. People see someone do good and still find fault.
TheRichardHinckley 3 weeks ago
@TheRichardHinckley what is your actual evidence? bonchbonch 2 weeks ago
Apple lovers are more insufferable than the Linux crowd -- at least they have valid points.
ccrosbie33 2 weeks ago
@TheRichardHinckley Take a look at what Bill did with his pricing plan on copies of Windows for things like Dell versus people making their own computers. When Dell gets Windows for 5 dollars and a home made computer gets Windows for 200... it single-handedly killed the market for people making computers from parts. No one can compete with $195 overhead competition.
gameshowmatt 1 week ago
@gameshowmatt I know, I remember that. Of course, you could use a non-Windows OS. If you were building from parts, you could probably still have matched Dell's price but with better hardware if you really knew what you were doing with building computers, which, back in the late 1990s, I did. But yeah, it was a shrewd business move and benefited Dell and MS and was not really bad for the mainstream consumer who wanted Windows and pre-made computer.

But it's always more expensive, because quite frankly all you're buying is the value of their brand.
MrSupastar83 3 months ago 54
@MrSupastar83 I agree. With apple you are getting many of the same internal hardware components (e.g. Intel, Nvidia, etc). I believe people are buying apple for the styling, brand image and warranty/support. Those are good reasons to buy a product so no one get upset. A good example of this was the early Kia vehicles; the quality was low but they came with a great warranty that the company honored. Kia is doing very well now. I prefer windows and it is better for what I do with it.
mumbles005 2 months ago
@whiteej21 That doesn't make sense. Microsoft doesn't make hardware, just software. Apple makes Hardware and Software. I am not sure what Microsoft can fix for you, beyond software issues.
CoolKabbage 3 months ago
@CoolKabbage Apple doesn't make hardware. It contracts lowest bidder companies to make hardware. They stifle competition and encourage repetition of old technologies. Microsoft on the other hand is applied to a hardware standard that encourages serious R&D competition ... and most importantly it creates software (and supports software developers) that create programs that continuously create new demand for better hardware. One is interested in marketing. The other the future.

@acb0001 It is a pretty important key point. Microsoft goes to huge lengths to support small business software engineers. That's why there is such a huge amount of software available on their operating systems.
JamuelSLackson 3 months ago
@JamuelSLackson Their core hardware is usually a generation behind what's available on a PC and if you factor in an equally good case, the Apple with the same specs is twice the price.

@MrFisherb7 The computer industry is more complicated than other industries. There are different schools of thought on what makes one computer better than the other. OS X provides an easier and better experience for less tech-savvy people who just want to do basic things like surf the web, etc. Windows is more customizable, and can ultimately be more powerful in the hands of a computer expert.

qwertyuiopdan1 4 months ago 2
@whiteej21 he didnt say that real competition does not always improve quality, he said only that crushing the competition by having a bigger wallet does not increase quality. That is not the definition of competition. He is right that people forfeited all these mom and pop shops by insisting on paying a few cents less, but the mom and pop shops forfeited their future by not adapting and innovating. Like many of you, they did not see that most people value savings over crappy smalltalk.

@whiteej21 wasting life? Having more free time in which to do whatever you want because you can get access to music faster and cheaper is wasting life? You don't get it.

@theredscourge Only inept video producers and graphic designers. You know the ones who went to school before computers were part of the curriculum...

Part 1 was awesome, then they start bitching about microsoft.

Wow... So he complains about Microsoft and Apple, then mentions making a shitty copy and selling it...
Because Apple wasn't ripped off of anything else. . . Louis doesn't know much about computers. Apple was just a crap altered kernel of unix.

Wow. Louis is actually WRONG about Microsoft. So disappointed.

I was telling people about Louis CK back in 1995 or so. I could listen to him talk forever because he just has good takes on things.

Louis CK (or one of his fans on here) should make (or promote) a website for independent artists called "diversity," or "diversify" since he's talking about the problems of pressures toward uniformity in limited markets.
