Its an old competition that used to be held, the Reeses Gymnastics Cup. It was basically a fun meet where the worlds best came to do really wacky routines like this for their fans and for some kind of weird prize (I remember one year it was a guitar). They stopped doing them though so we just have the tours after the Games and the crappy Progressive shows every year.

I'm pretty sure the prize the Reese's Cup winners received was money (unless they were maintaining NCAA eligibility). The competition that gave electric guitars as prizes was the Rock N Roll Championships, which was similar in format but the athletes only performed on floor exercise.

Over 35 years in the sport as a teacher, coach, and administrator, at the pre school to world class level, multiple national team member, multiple national champion coach, nationally and internationally rated judge, inventor of the judging bias system, coached by the BEST coaches in the world......let's just say I am more qualified than anyone in the world to make that comment!

I think you're reading too far into this. Gymnasts' careers don't last long. At a certain point, they have to start thinking of what they want to do after they retire. At the time these videos were taken, he had already been to the Olympics and achieved his lifelong goal. It would be dumb of him to NOT have an interest in pursuits outside the gym. And, actually, compared to most gymnasts, he does have a great performance quality and a visible love (and talent) for performing.
