  • ROTFLMAO!!!! Have loved the movie since it was released; have the first few episodes of RWT. More Beatles ought to know about this. A legend to last a lunchtime.

  • Beatles totally ripped these guys off.

  • And amazing to think how Stig went on to be such a bloody good driver...

  • Wierd to know Barry Wom is actually a better rummer than Ringo.

  • for a comparable beatlesque sound & clip, check out mid-60s uruguayan band los shakers, "break it all."

  • Or is it 1964?

  • Love this original Rutles footage from 1963, look at the girls going crazy over them!

  • @Gyphia, I'm pretty sure you couldn't call that irony, since the Rutles songs were written by good musicians trying to copy the Beatles style. Rather, you should say "Expectedly, this stands up well against genuine Beatle songs ...

  • The best bit is watching the genuine footage of the Beatles fans. They are absolutely obsessed and hysterical. Funny video too :)

  • earwig. great.

  • tut99 is right

  • at this point eric idle still hadn't quite perfected the mccartney mannerisms - - they're much more evident in "all you need is cash."

  • EXCELLENT!!

    5*****.

    Jennie.

  • I want an "Earwig" drum kit!!

  • I just realized that Barry is the teacher from the original Willy Wonka!

  • @finkelsteinshitkid I think you're thinking of Stig. And yes.

  • Must've been a pain to re-do the whole thing without the original Stig.

  • I actually like the Rutles songs better.

  • @radboy65 ...surely you jest!

  • @radboy65

They were clever parodies indeed, perhaps *too* clever!

Many are actually quite good in their own right.

  • Eric Idle's character of "Dirk McQuickly" was based on that of George at the time (or so I have read), and it wasn't until the made for TV movie that he took on the persona of Paul.

  • @August8th1969 ...Actually, Eric would be "Stig" (George) and who is it playing the part of "Dirk" (Paul)? Plus, that's a funky right-handed Hofner copy...actually...lol.

  • it's a shame that they haven't been voted into the rock and roll hall of fame by now

  • As a musician I can tell you this: the drummer for the Rutles is a better drummer than the drummer of the Beatles.

  • @pbrick6301 ...Two questions..1. What're you smoking...and 2. Where can I get some? jk :-)

  • @pbrick6301 ...Two questions..1. What're you smoking...and, 2. Where can I get some? jk :-) Oh, a 3rd question....."the drummer for"...don't they have names or are they simply identified as "the drummer"...much like "the bass player" of the Wonders? jka :-)

  • @pbrick6301 He's not even the best drummer in the Rutles.........

  • @LeamingtonSteve excellent point.

  • I've thinking about who Neil Innes looks like the most. He does look a bit like John Lennon but now I know who looks like him the most. David Duchovny (Fox Mulder).

He's got the same face. I should say that Mulder looks allot like Nasty from the Rutles.

  • @Pete1961a and a bit like a singer from the early '80s...Greg Kihn

  • @Pete1961a ......"She looks more like him than I do".....

  • Wait a minute is this a alternate reality???? Wasn't Eric Idle the bass player. I must be in Love was much faster. It's a great alternate version. I'm confused!

  • @Pete1961a ...Actually, this is pre-"All You Need Is Cash" t.v. special....actually.

  • The Rutles changed music they was much better than The What and the falling rocks

  • That's Eric Idle, doing the "Stig" part. Ricky Fattar became Stig for the Documentary.

Eric Idle switched to "Dirk McQuickley"

  • @tomandaj1 ..right on.

  • @tomandaj1 ....spot on, mate.

  • Lol the inspiration for the fab four .This is actually a really good song..I am a Rutles fan...........lol....I must be in love BRILL

  • This would really have been a chart-topping hit if it was released during the early 60's.

  • "..directed by Dick Lester, which is very near Rutland". Brilliant.

  • I used to have such a crush on Neil Innes. He's an amazing writer. He did the songs in one of the Python films where he played a minstrel. Holy Grail I think it was.

    Whats he doing now?

  • Neil Innes is a fucking Genius.

  • @schultz970 I agree with you

  • THis song never fails to put a smile on my face. Wonderful, wonderful.

  • I like the Piano in there.

  • true , great song in its own right innes is so underrated.....

  • Nice set of Earwig drums Barry is playing

  • @niuog Yes, i prefer Silverfish...although Earwig was the preferred Merseybeat kit...

  • WOW !!!! amazing what The Rutles did for music and the doors they opened foor the groups like the Beatles and The Stones it sucks that STIG IS DEAD!!!!!

  • What a tune !

  • This is great!

  • I think the early Spinal Tap were support at Che Stadium.

  • They was much better than the falling rocks and The What bands, Who is the beatles

  • For over 30 years I have been telling people that this is my favourite Beatles song !

No one has ever got the joke !

I think I'll put this in my Beatles playlist & see if anyone notices !

    Thank you for sharing xx

Sidebar - isn't that street at the end the same one where John Cleese beat up his car in 'Flowery Tways' ?

  • Incredibly clever...the lyrics are priceless! I loved the movie and I have the album.

  • It appears here that John Halsey is introduced as "Stig" and the fourth guy as "Barry." I guess they changed a few things around (like Rikki joining the cast) by the time the actual movie was done.

  • Why is Dirk McQuickly playing the guitar?

  • erics wig is abit wrong here, innit? haha

  • @kyrastube Erics Wig....or "earwig" for short, phonetcially...ahem, anyway...

  • Look how differently Stig looks here from his later appearances on Sgt Rutter and Shabbey Road. It's obvious that he was replaced by a lookalike (and not a very good one at that!) after he *died*. The clues are all there. Wake up people: Stig is DEAD!!!!

Stig has been dead for ages, honestly!

  • @tuttt99: Shhhhh!!!, don't type so loud. Yes, you and I know Stig is dead and was replaced by an imposter but there are some pretty powerful and dangerous people out there and they are willing to make sure the news never gets out. That's why I boarded up my windows and threw out all my furniture. They were bugging my home. I ripped out all wiring and plumbing in the walls and then I realized they are monitoring me from space. LEAVE YOUR HOUSE, MOVE TO SOUTH AMERICA AND ASSUME ANOTHER IDENTITY!!!

  • @tuttt99

    e burres stigano

  • @tuttt99 they froze his 'ed !

  • @tuttt99 ....Or is he?.....hmmmm.

  • @tuttt99 Interviewed Neil Innes last month for "Chattoon"

  • @tuttt99 Some say he was a CIA experiment go wrong. All I know is he's called stig

  • Haha these guys dont compare with the Beatles your on crack. Your all on crack haha.

  • Barry Wom runs a pub in my town, the castle on castle hill! He roooooools

  • I must be in love with the rutles! :o*

  • lol

  • Feel`s like a [SBF] Lan :-)..

  • I do love me some Pre-fab Four!

  • Thanks for this classic clip. Sounds to me like the recording of "Must be in Love" is different from the one later used in the movie and on the CD. This sounds slicker, I'd almost say better, but maybe not quite as "Rutley"

  • I really do love this song...so disgustingly Beatles...in the best way possible!

  • ah brings back memories

  • Eric isn't Dirk...he's Stig and someone else is Dirk....hmmmm....interesting and very worth watching. Thanks forsharing.

  • I thought he looked like Steve Coogan til I realised that Steve Coogan would have only been about 10 when this was made hahaha - it's David Battley who played the school teacher in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

  • Oops, typo I meant Earwig !

  • Earwing drums, love it !

  • i've wanted to see this for a lunch time! thanks

  • This is really cool to see. Thanks.

  • When Eric introduces them by name in this clip, he is named as Dirk but is shown as the George Harrison character; John Halsey (drummer) is introduced as "Stig" and "Barry" (as the McCartney character) is actor David Battley. They switched the names around when they did the movie; only Neil Innes as Nasty kept the same name AND role.

  • @graytart ..I did not know that. Thanks for that bit of info! :-)
