@taillebasse1 I have to say that I resent your comments. Columbia Business School (along with most other top-tier b-schools) prides itself in its moral and ethical standing. We (students) are investing a lot of effort, time, and money in our education so that we can be prepared to be entrepreneurial and successful in the business world... Not so that we can be corrupt and sit on boards.
You may be looking to throw blame somewhere for a struggling economy, but CBS is not the right place.
@fmtoussant Good question... I actually don't know the reasoning behind it. I haven't seen the picture since submitting it with the application. AND It won't be used later for your class roster or Student ID card (you submit a new photo for those).
Great video! I was wondering how interactive/resourceful CBS alumni have been in your experience (especially for those trying to tap into the network to switch careers)? Do you find that the alumni network is geographically biased (i.e. NYC) or pretty well represented around the world (I'm particularly interested in working in S.E. Asia). Thanks!
@DrBanman12 CBS has an amazing alumni group. Obviously, lots of alums are in New York, but there are many in other cities as well. You could try to find out more information through admissions or the Southeast Asian Business Association. Information on student clubs can be found here: www4.gsb.columbia.edu/cbs-directory/student-groups
@DrBanman12 Mia is right! I can speak about the alumni network in Latin America, specially in Argentina where they have been extremely helpful and very receptive from the very first day I started thinking about CBS
because the network after college, across continents is as invaluable as peer advising, adv corp fin with prof hodrick, cluster idol and the beer game! #whycbs #proudCBSalum
@peretzmex Students use a variety of sources to finance bschool - loans, scholarships, fellowships, some students are sponsored by their employer. More information is available here: gsb.columbia.edu/mba/admissions/tuition Please feel free to reach out to the financial aid office with any questions. They will be happy to help.
@alistevas Although students generally take grades seriously as a sign of mastering class material, the student body voted for grade non-disclosure to recruiters (except for students in the top 10%). The reasoning is that this promotes more teamwork and community in the classroom. It also allows students to take courses outside of their area of expertise without worrying about the impact on their GPA.
@lreinhardt Thanks!! you won't believe how helpful CBS classmates are in helping you out with anything... whether it's an accounting assignment or tweeting!
@jmcurry10 Thanks for the question. I definitely think space is an issue at CBS. Unlike some of our peer schools, we do not have the most state of the art facilities and thus it can be hard to find space to have group meetings. The administration realizes that this is an issue and is in the process of building a new business school campus in upper Manhattan.
@jmcurry10 As someone mentioned before, the biggest complaint is definitely the facilities and the feeling of being over-crowded. It can certainly be annoying, but it also fosters a sense of community and it's nice to always run into the same people and have to hang out with them!
thanks for this--great video! I especially like the tweet, "come from wherever you are, go wherever you want". What resources are available for career changers at CBS?
@nycg821 There are MANY, MANY career changers here! AND this is a great place for them. That tweet is really the truth. Once you get here, you will have the opportunity to explore any type of job that interests you. Whether it's something you've done before or something brand new, there will be panels, presentations, and recruiting events for virtually any type of job you might want...
@mmelmed2 For the career changers, did you apply/interview and acknowledge that you wanted to make a career change? Or did you rather look to pursue something related to your previous fields, and change your minds after the fact?
@dr0xlunltd Both routes are common. The application process is a great time to do some self-examination. If you really want a career change then you probably have some compelling reasons for the new direction. Don't be afraid to be honest in your application and state those reasons with confidence. If you're a consultant, but found that the financial analysis part of the job is what really interested you, then it's okay to say your goal is to be an investment banker.
@nycg821 I'm a career changer and so far CBS has been really great. Career Services helps you understand how to manage the process, and you can join student groups for whatever new career you're interested in. They have lots of resources for you - career development panels, networking events, job postings, and so much more. Plus with the students, alumni, and easy access to so many companies you can really learn about your new industry and how to break into it.
@nycg821 almost everybody in my cluster is a career switcher and the professional clubs do a great job helping people through the recruiting process in a new industry: there all sorts of training programs, mock interviews and formal and informal chats with second years and alumni that are very helpful!
@newberry2927 I applied early decision so I don't have personal experience with regular decision, but I think getting your application in by the end of the year is best.
@newberry2927 I believe most students that are not doing early decision get their application in by December/ early January. I applied by the end of November and heard back by early January. Admissions does a great job at getting back to applicants. CBS does rolling admissions, so I would encourage you to get it in as soon as you feel comfortable submitting it.
@newberry2927 I applied for the January deadline. If there is something you can do to improve your application (by gaining another job experience or even editing essays more), that will play a bigger role than the date you submitted the app. Admissions recommends applying as early as possible. I'd recommend as soon as you think you've made your application as strong as possible.
Thanks for the Video. I am thinking of reapplying to CBS. My biggest weakness is that I have been jobless for 3 years in Dubai, UAE from late 2008 till now. A GMAT of 590, GPA 4.00 from Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univ, Florida in 1999. 8 yrs work experience. I had applied in 2009 and 2011 to CBS and did not get in. I am still considering applying in Round 2 and am planning to regime the GMAT. I have worked in NYC at a consulting firm so would love to return to the city. What would u advise?
@monishasan007 I would recommend trying to turn your weaknesses into positives. If you're not working, spend the extra time that you have trying to bump up the GMAT. Also, you can try to show that while you haven't technically been employed, you're not just sitting around on the couch; rather you've been following your passions of XYZ and being constructive and entrepreneurial over the last 3 years. Good luck in your next attempt... hope that third time is a charm!
@mmelmed2 Thanks for replying. I have indeed followed my passions and do plan to write about it in the essays. Also I will be giving the GMAT again to get a big bump to show that I have used the time intelligently to increase my score.
@monishasan007 always remember to show how you've worked on your weaknesses! Here it is all about defying yourself every single day, so don't be afraid to take another chance in applying to CBS!
Thanks for uploading this great video. Anything you don't like about CBS? I've heard complaints about Uris and "too many students" (compared to other programs). Thoughts?
@bsbsbs0101 It's no secret Uris isn't up to world class business school standard. It's not as bad as I expected, but there is a reason it's being replaced (2015 I think). I think NYC makes up for the problems with the building, but its no secret that Booth, Tuck, Ross, Wharton, etc have better facilities. I'd also add that cost of living in NYC is an issue and could be prohibitive especially for students with families.
@bsbsbs0101 Uris isn't impressive, but it works. As far as class size, clusters and clubs help you make a smaller community out of the larger class. You'll take core classes with the same group of about 70 people in your cluster. The clusters also organizes a lot of social events. I think a large class size leads to a wider range and higher quality of student clubs (there are a lot of students with experience and/or interest in a huge range of topics).
Any current students have advice for an ED applicant who was deferred? l love everything about CBS and am looking for ways to get further involved and hopefully join the family!
@nyxfitter Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, we don't really know if there is anything left that you can do... besides wait for the deferred decision. Good luck!! Is there anything about the program that you are still curious about?
Guys is CBS good for operations managment?
