Can I favorite this video forever? Oh, but it'd be nice if you also pointed the issue of bringing up Twilight in COMPLETELY UNRELATED SITUATIONS JUST TO HATE ON IT. "Oh, there's a vampire in a completely unrelated show, which reminds me how much I hate Twilight Fuck Twilight!" <---That sort of thing. Because frankly it's uneccessary and irritating. It's the same with Justin Beiber haters, actually. Anyway, grats getting the word out, hope people see this and stop being brainless dickheads.
I have never read the Twilight books, but I have unfortunately seen the first film, out of curiousity. Leaving aside the fact that is was quite boring, and I thought the acting was terrible... the characterisations were AWFUL. Bella is one-dimensional, yet she comes to a new school and suddenly all these guys want her, she has all these friends, yet she shows ZERO personality or qualities. She ignores her friends for boys. It really feels like the author was living out a bizarre fantasy
Creepy manipulative overprotected stalker. Good point. As a guy I thought the Twilight movies were alright but just not written for my demographic. Thinking about it further I realize what a bad example Bella is to women. She is very weak and dependent. Perhaps the writer will have an arc for her almost non-character in the next two movies.
I kind of wish I was still taking classes where I could write a paper about the damage Twilight does to young women. I worry about 12 or 13 year olds who think Bella and Edward are an example of a perfect relationship. It will make them a lot less likely to notice the warning signs of an abusive relationship, such as the stalking, isolating her from her friends, and protectiveness.
For awhile I've been thinking, what if this same story was played absolutely straight? Like, a horror film about this girl whose being stalked and terrorized by an emotionally abusive guy with supernatural powers? Like, the stalker aspect is genuine source of tension, rather than Stephanie Meyer's bizarre attempt at a love story?
Watched the film on a public library DVD and was monumentally BORED. Have never read the books but it was absolutely clear where the next two films would go. And Bella just seemed such a disappointment. When later I saw THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on TV, it was clearly more of the same. BEING HUMAN (either version) holds a little more hope - would be interested in seeing a video about either of those.
maybe also because it's poorly written, there's no suspense, the characters have no scale and the love story is highly over rated and way to much fictional ( and that's just my opinion)
“Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”-
while she raised good points (really good points), I'm still confused over one major detail; why would a bunch of immortal folks with super powers spend their time GOING TO HIGH SCHOOL!?
I agree with the video, however, there's a difference between being sensitive, and being what his character is. Shallow, ill-able to emote even the SLIGHTEST of feelings. And what the hell is with that movie that no one can even show facial expressions!? Totally pisses on vampire movies. I did enjoy Queen of the Damned however. The Bella character, or as my wife and I refer to her as "Pants" is also guilty as hell of this lack of emotion ability as well.
I never gave the twilight series any real interest so all I knew of it was lame whiny emo vampire thrown into my face and idiotic fanatics. You just gave me more reasons to hate this fad.
It's also the fact that I'm male. I've lived in a society that values the "strong man" image my whole life, not expressing emotions, not asking for help shit like that and then seeing this shit eaten up the way it is just bothers me and makes me feel uncomfortable.
@anonymous0s0egion ... Am I reading the second half of your comment correctly in saying that you hate women enjoying Twilight, not because the female lead is a Mary Sue, the writing is sloppy, or the story utter trash, but because the male lead is considered attractive despite not being a stereotypical male?
OMG, YES! 100% YES! This is what I say word-for-word when one of my friends says, "*GASP* WHY DO YOU HATE TWILIGHT? IT'S THE BEST BOOK SERIES EVER!!!" I'm a girl, I've read all four Twilight books, so I know what I'm talking about.
When I started watching the video I wasn't sure where you were going with this, but then I heard the magic words 'Edward is (a) creepy" and knew that you just became my new hero. Favorited & Liked.
I admit, as a teenage girl I used to fantasize about having a man who would make me his absolute reason for living and die for me a any time.... and then I met someone who was completely willing to do that. To make things worse, he never gave me my space. I refuse to give Stephanie Meyer any of my money. And after looking over the story itself, how weak-minded Bella is, and how obsessive and controlling the two men are, I can't believe my aunt is letting her granddaughter read those books!
completely true, i wish "twihards" had some dignity. sometimes feminists get super-carried away for my taste, but i completely support you in this case. twilight isn't a story, it's a long and complex fantasy about an imaginary perfect guy and a girl who can't do a thing without him.
@Alloflifedecays honestly, I think this is actually the real kicker. I'm not a book-burner, and even books with a bad message should be kept (in the Restricted Section, of course) to educate people 'PS- this is how NOT to do it', but honestly I can't even learn that from Twilight because I can't finish a chapter without thinking 'My English prof would FLUNK this author..o.o'
Negative examples, though regrettable, are probably more effective than showing a healthy relationship working out.
Isn't it scary that one of my english teachers (AP even) wanted us to analyze a part of twilight?
And no, it wasn't looking for the wrong way to do it. So I looked up and said "Wow, this book is stupid" while seeing my teacher's giant Twilight Movie Poster on her classroom wall.

She missed a good chance to mention the real problem with Twilight. Unlike other fantasy stories (like Harry Potter even), Twilight consists of a weak-minded female lead who is indecisive between 2 perfect boys who are willing to do anything for. As she straddles between risking her life for a high school crush and being anti-social, she feels sorry for herself whenever one of her boyfriends aren't around. She has no drive, no higher goals in life (not even college). That's enough right there.
@caspringer09 This video is not about Bella, it's about the homophobic criticisms of Twilight. Trust me, I have PLENTY of criticisms of how horrible of a character Bella is.
@feministfrequency Good point. You could make a video for why she's a bad female character as well. Seeing as the last two movie are yet to be released, I'd feel your points would still be relevant. That's my two cents. I like your videos, keep them up. :)
@feministfrequency I would love to see a video explaining how insulting Bella Swan is. I don't think people (especially girls and women) really understand how destructive the character is to female empowerment. I think you could deliver it eloquently. I love your videos.
You should also add that Bella is the poster child for "battered woman syndrome". Seriously, Edward does nothing but get her hurt and put her in constant danger, and even after he tries to leave to fix that she basically throws herself into more danger to keep his attention.
Basically she's the worst role model imaginable for young girls.
I have actually made this comment many times about Twilight, and feel glad someone else sees my point of view.
It has to be said though, that on an "Edward is a vampire" level rather than "Edward is a man/male character" level a little more actually vampire action going down would add something to the plot. Sorry, would add a plot.
bella is the most anti-feminist character in popular fiction. she's a total blank slate without any particular interests in anything besides toying with the emotions of the men around her. her life completely revolves around edward and she deliberately sows conflict between the men in her life because she enjoys being a prize that men fight over.
The story is also quite offensive against both sexes. Women are portrait as being dependent on their men in order to achieve something with their lives, and men are portait as always being strong and overprotective of their girlfriends in order to be "real men". It dosen't take much to figure out that Bella and Edward has nothing in common, and Twilight isn't by any means original. A stereotypical religous american woman writes one-dimensional crap based upon her own stereotypical life. ugh...
@Concretshky That's about hitting the nail on the head, I'd say. Being a male, and interested in psychology more so than feminism, I've seen the conflict this series puts on young males. You wouldn't believe how many young girls have told me they are looking for a boyfriend like Edward. It's sad on her part that she has such a narrow view of her world, and just as complicating on males trying to achieve that status to please these girls, when that is unrealistic from both directions.
I hate Twilight because it's a pretentious portrait of a superficial bunch shit that borders on the melodramatic psychosis of the author. Glorifying the relationship between a teenage girl and 100-year old sadistic monster who can't decide if he wants to have sex with, or murder his girlfriend. Considering the fact that a lot of women are getting abused by their men, I can't find it romantic, just disturbing and offensive. Women should know better than enjoying this self-loathing immature crap.
@Concretshky I love this. Eloquently written. Unlike the mediocre writing of twilight, you actually surpassed Meyers ability in grammar in just one paragraph!
An I allowed to hate Twilight because Edward takes away everything cool about vampires AND because he is a creepy, manipulative, controlling, overprotective stalker?
WOOO! Hell to the yeah. As a feminist and a Twilight reader/vampire aficionado, I really appreciated this rant.
Frankly, I'm losing patience with the whole "Edward is GAY" nonsense. Being gay does not mean being less than. Being gay is not a bad thing. The controlling manipulative asshat bit, however, is problematic.
I hate twilight as there isnt really a independant female in the whole series, Bella is emotional shattered by Edward leaving not vice-versa ladies! infact every female is pinned in a partnership with a male serving both as lackluster not important roles, its a simple romance story of vampires glittered up! Bella is not admirable as strong but as a weak defenceless women who clearly has chosen the wrong man in a relationship in which he holds power! why do people women in particular enjoy this?
I agree with all the critical points and I want to add, that I hate how Bella is pushed into to the typical role of a housewife: she is cooking for her daddy, doing laundry...but shes never complaining, expecting something in reward, never questions her role... and her dad is just that guy who can't show any feelings to her, he is aswell is not developing.
But the WORST thing is how the books were turned into movies: so extremely bad! I was getting mad at how emotionless Bella acted and spoke!!
I have my own loathing of the novel but sometimes I do think some men dislike the book is because it's a "girly thing" and not necessarily its sexism and mediocrity. I remember ranting about Twilight with two other guys. They agreed that Twilight sucked. However when I talked about the objectification of women in Transformers and the like, they spluttered indignantly and tried to defend it. So yeah...you are so dead-on on the Twilight hate.
I've often gotten into conversations with others about the stalking subject and the defense is always that Edward's trying to protect Bella. Um, from what, exactly? He stalks her quite a while before the baddies come into the picture and if he really saw them coming, wouldn't it have been safer for him to keep his distance and NOT stalk her, showing obvious attraction to her (shallow though it may be) and therefore grabbing their attention?
I also dislike Twilight (apart from it being badly written with poor 'romance' and stalkerdude) because it validates the most common explanation for the results of physical abuse.
"Oh my god, where did you get that bruise? Did someone hurt you?"
"No, of course not. I'm just clumsy, that's all."
OR
"Oops, I dropped that cookie tray not because I hurt too much to hold it steady, but because I'm clumsy."
This is the first video you've made that I agree with. I'd like to also point out that if the girl in the story is 16 and he's like 400+ years old, that makes him a paedophile too.
The right reason to hate Twilight? Edward is creepy as all hell. Thankfully, Robert Pattinson plays him this way since he sees the character as incredibly creepy.
The thing I always found weirdest was that when Bell learns that Edward has been watching her sleep at night, she's actually happy about it. If some guy I recently started seeing told me he had been watching me sleep at night for months, I would freak out.
@AkemiCaffeine I don't think it's really what Edward does to romanticize the bahaviour, it's really what the writer, Stephanie Meyer, does. She romanticizes it by how she's writes Bella's reactions to Edward's stalking/creepy-ness. For instance, after Edward tells her that he's been watching her sleep at night, instead of freaking thefuck out, Bella feels her 'heart flutter in her chest'.
I hate Twilight because Stephanie Meyer donates 10% of her income, including 10% of the proceeds from the Twilight franchise to anti-gay movements. Her being a Mormon, and doing what all good little Mormons do, support a religion that discriminates against a minority.
I refuse to support her in any way, including not buying any books on/or tickets to see twilight. I wouldn't waste a dollar at Redbox to see it.
@feministfrequency Mormons donate 10% of their income to the church as a tithe. This can be seen as donating to anti-gay movements, because the Mormon church is pretty well-known for being anti-gay (for example, being one of the major supporters of Prop 8).
Just google "Stephenie Meyer gave money to Prop 8" and there would be tons of hits. Even though she does not directly give money to it, she knowingly donates money to a religion that does support prop 8.
@grendel1013 Oh god, I feel like shit now. I bought 3 of the books and saw 2 of the movies. If you don't mind, I'm putting this in my anti-Twilight document. It has tons of science disproving a lot of the series, and now it has a hell of a lot of hate. WTF MEYER!?
@grendel1013 Also she actually quoted in one of the books a Mormon text which several sentences down pretty much said that anyone who is gay is going to hell and deserves to be punished for eternity. Therefore I do find it amusing that a portion of its fanbase ship Edward with Jacob etc, though the fact she has fans at all puts a downer on this...
@SexKitty95 Honey, that's actually just written in the Bible, not any of the Mormon texts. Trust me, I've studied those texts and there is nothing in there talking about gays being punished for enternity. Now in the Bible and the Quran there is a fekking LOT about anti-homosexuality, but not in the Book of Mormon.
@grendel1013 You're right. Stephani Meyers tithes to her Anti-Gay Mormon religion. She is forced to give at least 10% of her income to her church. In her case, that's a lot. Mormon tithing funds go to things like Proposition 8 and other religious influences in our government. So all you people that buy Stephanie Meyers products, understand that you're also supporting anything that the Anti-Gay Mormon Church tries to influence, persuade, or push upon with all of it's money. Fact. Look it up.
You perfectly sum up why I think Twilight is not just a bad story, but dangerous to the young women who read it and think Edward is a great guy. My friends and I read the book to see what all the fuss was about, and frankly, we were disgusted with this romanticized idea of stalking! It's like when you read fanfiction where suicide is romanticized. It is NOT something to be admired, it's something to be taken seriously. Thanks for this post!
This is a hilarious video, and very true. Not only is Edward a creepy, manipulative, overprotective stalker, Bella is a driveling, pathetic girl who gets WAY too hung up over said creepy, manipulative, overprotective stalker. Thanks for posting!
What's your take on 'Being Human'? I love it because it has well rounded characters who act believably in a fantasy setting. The female characters are very good.
@thagrammarnazi Oh yes, they have just recently remade it (or rather nearly identically copied it for American audiences). Haven't had a chance to check it out though.
@feministfrequency Different strokes fer different folks, I guess. I quite liked that series.
However, even Mitchell at his most whiny couldn't contend with the typhoon of annoyance that is the Cullen household. I admire you for standing up for the "Edward is a mental stalker" side, but really, you've got the wrong end of the stick in regards to the negative 'male' comments you post. They don't want Edward to abuse Bella. They want the vampire to be a monster, not a teenage Mormon's wet dream.
spill crew is alright with their review because for that movie/book he was being overly sensitive about wanting to protect her to the point he was going to pretty much kill himself anyway bella is drawn to him of her own very creepy stalkerish tendencies. and you have no right to tell us what the right and wrong reasons are, however I respect your opinion, I just hate twilight because it paints a nearly 1000 year old being as a creepy stalker and not an assertive forward thinking person.
@KanameTousen Edward is not sensitive he is a stalker, those things are not connected. Being sensitive means caring about another person's feelings, which is not a bad thing.
They can be genuine in sensitivity and still be a stalker, a stalker isn't always as much about control as you believe. There have been cases where a stalker does nothing but watch causing no harm and wanting no control ,just to know that persons safe. And if Edward is a creepy stalker why does Bella not only push away help but end up carrying his child willing?
@KanameTousen Stalking is absolutely NOT about making sure someone is safe. Stalking is by definition unwanted and obsessive attention. Bella is a fictional character and was written to normalize and romanticize this horrible behaviour, so the audience is supposed to find his behaviour sexy, attractive, romantic, and that is why it's important that we watch/read this story critically to dispel and bring to light the seriousness of this issue.
@feministfrequency I agree with you for the most part. At least about stalking definitely not needing to be among the list of bad behaviors romanticized in our pop culture. It's interesting how so many people complain about increases in such behaviors, and yet fail to realize it's exactly what's being taught.
The real reason why I hate Twilight is because Bella is a completely overly-codependent Mary Sue who simply LIVES for the affection of a creepy stalker and would practically throw away her life and the lives of her loved ones just to be in his presence.
The biggest thing wrong with Twilight is not that the guys are stalkers (though true). The biggest problem is that women love it, even though they are stalkers! Guys are shown videos of women going crazy over it, told by our female friends how romantic it is, thereby sugesting that men should be something else than logic and decency would dictate. It reinforces they idea that women are not honest about what they want. If Twilight didn't have fans, then millions $ wounldnt be spent to make them.
I hope more people-not just men-need to realize the messages about relationships in this book are dangerous for anyone reading or accepting them. It pains me to think there's a whole base of young fans who think that kind of behavior is okay.
One would think that Mary Shelley might take issue with your aversion to using a horror trope correctly. Wanting a traditionally horrific character type to be traditionally horrific has nothing to do with being misogynistic or homophobic and everything to do with having an opinion about horror. Wanting Edward to be a well adjusted dude, misses the point. He's a vampire that has to live on blood to survive. In case you're not paying attention, that alone makes him creepy and terrifying.
@liquiddark The books/movie are not horror movies, they are romantic dramas so having the "love interest" be a violent, creepy, stalker (who is framed as romantic) is a problem.
I agree with your points about him being creepy, overprotective and a stalker, but the fact he's not even fitting to his 'VAMPIRE' characterization is a problem.
I do hate twilight for your stated reasons. I also hate it because it's not violent enough and bloodthirsty.
IF it was violent and bloodthirsty it would be a better example of a bad person instead of being a movie star and making it seem like he is a good person and a good thing to day dream about.
I suffered through the 1st book, I could barely stand it.
I agree with the criticism of the hatred of Edward, but I would like to add, if he is over 100 years old, I would really hope he would have the emotional and intellectual maturity to move on from highschool.
If I was vampire over 100 years old, I could think of much better company and prey than high school students.
@benmconley I know this is kind of random and off-topic, but realistically, I would imagine a vampire to be very much like any other 100 year old. They either stop caring about themselves, about other people, about consequences, or all of the above. So theoretically, an immortal would be *more* immature and lacking all impulse control and common courtesy....or would consider people a novelty but no longer have the desire to make social connections for the pain of losing friends. Just my 2 cents.
@Nectra Can we add pedophile to Edward's negative traits? He may have been physically around the same age as Bella when he died, but he has had at least a hundred more years "life experence" than her. If he had aged to match his years and was "still alive" would it have even been a question that he was a pedophile. Of course not. The simple fact that he is "attractive" does not change what he is. Edward is a creepy stalker pedophile.
Agreed. I was actually flabbergasted that Twilight is so successful even here in Europe. Besides it being a rather flat and poorly written story with like gazillions of plotholes it is quite blatantly anti-feminist - and I didn't expect people to be THAT backward. Meh.
I think the reason you present to hate Twilight is not the ONLY reason. Vampire fiction and the lore of the stories is quite extensive. It's been in many cultures for hundreds of years. When Meyers completely dismissed some of the vampire fundamentals, it put a great dampening on what was a once thrilling genre. It's now a sap story. It's "teen fiction" that boasts what love should be, when it's message is entirely wrong and undeniably sexiest. They were two genres not to be mixed.
I agree for the most part (though I think you're misjudging the male commentary most think he's a sleaze too they just don't articulate it as such) but would also like to commend that Bella is a useless whining, spoiled, obnoxious, manipulative vamp who toys with the feels of others for her own personal benefit and has all the personality and innate positive qualities of a cardboard cut out.
@PsyckoSama I think you're spot on. I suffered through Twilight a couple years ago, and the creepy stalker romantic lead, I could deal with. The whining pining Bella was another story altogether. These books are being marketed to young girls, and their heroine is a girl whose well being and sense of self are wholly reliant on the attentions of a boy she's just met. It's so irritating that she's the role model for a generation when she's entirely shallow, depressing, and poorly written.
@brs5tettba Did you not watch the video?? I gave VERY specific examples that showed how many commentators called the series "GAY" and if you need more evidence I can show you all the comments that I haven't approved. Calling something gay that is not a male homosexual man, is HOMOPHOBIA.
@feministfrequency I agree with the bulk of your video. In my previous comment I am referring specifically to your inclusion of "Edward is too sensitive" in the list of wrong reasons to hate twilight.
@brs5tettba My second reply was written before you wrote this, hopefully it addresses that concern. Lastly, I just want to reiterate that sensitivity when referring to men in popular culture is nearly ALWAYS thought of as bad, inferior, too much like a woman etc. It is a way to maintain gender roles and display men as stronger, tougher and therefore better.
@brs5tettba And displaying sensitivity in male characters is not a bad thing, even if it's changing or altering an established narrative myth, the problem is that he is somehow inferior, or less of a man because of this sensitivity. And additionally, he is not sensitive he is a disturbingly over protective, stalker. So the offensive comments repeatedly stating this (alleged) sensitivity is totally wrong in this situation.
@feministfrequency No need to restate the over-protective stalker bits. I agree with that. Are you sure that statements berating his sensitivity are comments on his worth as a man? He is clearly a fictional character put forth for our entertainment, and without further evidence of homophobia, I would attribute comments on that attribute to his success as a fictional character, not his success as a man.
@brs5tettba I'm not even going to spend the time talking about why it's important to be critical of media. But to your other point, yes, I am absolutely sure that statements about his sensitivity are directly related to his worth as a man, and more importantly to any real men who might actually express emotion.
@feministfrequency Why would spend time talking about why it's important to be critical of the media, in a reply thread not remotely related to that subject?
@brs5tettba Of course I'd be happy to talk about it generally, but it's a given for all the work I do. And it seemed like you were being dismissive of whether it was valid to critique entertainment. If you google "Moff's Law" there is a good response to those who don't think it's worth it to critique pop culture and the media.
The reason people complain about Edward not being aggressive enough isn't because they want to see macho violent arsewipes as main characters, but because they think vampires should be monsters, and hate the books and films because they turn them into perfect sparkly wish fulfillment devices. Of course we want Edward to be violent and physically abusive! He's a vampire! They're supposed to be terrifying undead monsters that kill and eat people. People want monsters to be, well, monstrous.
I think most of the guys making those comments are just too immature to see differently. The trailers and promotional material for the movies comes across as action movie ads. Their attacking it on the basis of it didn't deliver on what they wanted, a violent movie about monsters fighting and a suave vampire getting the girl, rather than the emotional content they didn't care about in the first place. Also, to be fair I know plenty of guys that don't like it for the stalker thing too.
More than the characters being completely 1 dimensional personifications of Stephanie Meyer's victim complex, i'll stick to "the books are written poorer than an elementary school free period creative writing assignment that any decent writer could've spat out in a week."
As a woman, I would like to add that the reason I hate Twilight is because Bella has based her happiness on her relationship with Edward and has not explored other aspects of her life (friends, family, career, hobbies.....) that are equally important to one's happiness. Happiness does not depend solely on whether or not you have a significant other.
I honestly found Twilight to be incredibly sexist. Bella relies completley on Edward for everything. She also let's Edward boss her around steal her car, tell her how to treat her family and watches her when she sleeps. I don't know why Stephanie Myer finds that amusing, I also don't know why all the girls in my grade find it amusing.
lol I love you I so agree not only that but he is such a Pedo! HEllo how old is he? sure he's stuck at like 17 but he's how old again like 100 something NO THANKS lol
That's a fine reason to hate Edward, but to be fair, most of us guys never spend enough time reading Twilight to pick up on that, and the girls in our lives who do read it are too busy fawning over him to share this fact with us.
Now, I agree with all your points, he is super skeevy, but the thing that particularly irritates me is simple fact of glittervamps. There's nothing wrong with a sympathetic vampire character, but for God's sake, no glitter.
i hate twilight because the developement of edward and the girl was extremely forced and unrealistic, the plot is waffer thin, the effects are TERRIBLE, its full of mellow drama with no sense of irony or self parody (like buffy for example), the vampires glitter, the acting is terrible and much of the scenes are simply there to give one of the guys a reason to take their shirt off.
YES! I've always thought that Edward was an incredibly creepy stalker.

I disagree with a lot of the stuff you say, but this one's dead on. Reminds me of an argument I had with someone who was ranting about Twilight:
"Twilight ruined vampires!"
"I'm not saying Twilight is good, but that's not a very good reason to hate something. so people shouldn't experiment with fictional concepts, ever?"
"well... it's also racist! Stephanie Meyer's portrayal of blacks is horrible!"
"so why not bring that up first? are fictional vampires more important to you than actual people?"

Alloflifedecays 6 months ago 6
@Alloflifedecays honestly, I think this is actually the real kicker. I'm not a book-burner, and even books with a bad message should be kept (in the Restricted Section, of course) to educate people 'PS- this is how NOT to do it', but honestly I can't even learn that from Twilight because I can't finish a chapter without thinking 'My English prof would FLUNK this author..o.o'
Negative examples, though regrettable, are probably more effective than showing a healthy relationship working out.

And that's 10% pre-tax for the Mormon tithe.
No donation to any charity or political interest should be deductible from one's income for the purpose of calculating your income tax. If it's a good cause (as you see it), you should be willing to donate to it without the tax break. Property owned by religious groups and charities should be subject to the same taxation as any other corporation or citizen. Tax-deductible fundraising costs should be limited to 10% of funds raised.

caspringer09 5 months ago
@feministfrequency I would love to see a video explaining how insulting Bella Swan is. I don't think people (especially girls and women) really understand how destructive the character is to female empowerment. I think you could deliver it eloquently. I love your videos.
Dwightsgirl1979 3 months ago 22
You should also add that Bella is the poster child for "battered woman syndrome". Seriously, Edward does nothing but get her hurt and put her in constant danger, and even after he tries to leave to fix that she basically throws herself into more danger to keep his attention.
Basically she's the worst role model imaginable for young girls.
ShinGallon 8 months ago 33
I have actually made this comment many times about Twilight, and feel glad someone else sees my point of view.
It has to be said though, that on an "Edward is a vampire" level rather than "Edward is a man/male character" level a little more actually vampire action going down would add something to the plot. Sorry, would add a plot.
PompamooseMagique 9 months ago 4
bella is the most anti-feminist character in popular fiction. she's a total blank slate without any particular interests in anything besides toying with the emotions of the men around her. her life completely revolves around edward and she deliberately sows conflict between the men in her life because she enjoys being a prize that men fight over.

And I thought Rei Ayanami from Eva was bad, and then Bella came along. At least Rei has some heroic attributes about her.
VigilanteNighthawk 7 months ago
The story is also quite offensive against both sexes. Women are portrait as being dependent on their men in order to achieve something with their lives, and men are portait as always being strong and overprotective of their girlfriends in order to be "real men". It dosen't take much to figure out that Bella and Edward has nothing in common, and Twilight isn't by any means original. A stereotypical religous american woman writes one-dimensional crap based upon her own stereotypical life. ugh...
Concretshky 9 months ago 28
@Concretshky That's about hitting the nail on the head, I'd say. Being a male, and interested in psychology more so than feminism, I've seen the conflict this series puts on young males. You wouldn't believe how many young girls have told me they are looking for a boyfriend like Edward. It's sad on her part that she has such a narrow view of her world, and just as complicating on males trying to achieve that status to please these girls, when that is unrealistic from both directions.
punchdrunkatheist 8 months ago 6
I hate Twilight because it's a pretentious portrait of a superficial bunch shit that borders on the melodramatic psychosis of the author. Glorifying the relationship between a teenage girl and 100-year old sadistic monster who can't decide if he wants to have sex with, or murder his girlfriend. Considering the fact that a lot of women are getting abused by their men, I can't find it romantic, just disturbing and offensive. Women should know better than enjoying this self-loathing immature crap.

Druzica18 10 months ago 21
I hate twilight as there isnt really a independant female in the whole series, Bella is emotional shattered by Edward leaving not vice-versa ladies! infact every female is pinned in a partnership with a male serving both as lackluster not important roles, its a simple romance story of vampires glittered up! Bella is not admirable as strong but as a weak defenceless women who clearly has chosen the wrong man in a relationship in which he holds power! why do people women in particular enjoy this?
patsybob 10 months ago 4
@patsybob
In society women are taught that they should be powerless to men. I think that's why women seem to enjoy the series so much.
Satantransvertdeath 10 months ago
I agree with all the critical points and I want to add, that I hate how Bella is pushed into to the typical role of a housewife: she is cooking for her daddy, doing laundry...but shes never complaining, expecting something in reward, never questions her role... and her dad is just that guy who can't show any feelings to her, he is aswell is not developing.
But the WORST thing is how the books were turned into movies: so extremely bad! I was getting mad at how emotionless Bella acted and spoke!!
DestinyOfPig 10 months ago 4

I'm just saying.

Snargaluffpod 1 year ago 19

I wouldn't waste a dollar at Redbox to see it.
grendel1013 1 year ago 407

feministfrequency 1 year ago 20
@feministfrequency Mormons donate 10% of their income to the church as a tithe. This can be seen as donating to anti-gay movements, because the Mormon church is pretty well-known for being anti-gay (for example, being one of the major supporters of Prop 8).
HalaBasinah 1 year ago 3
@feministfrequency
Just google "Stephenie Meyer gave money to Prop 8" and there would be tons of hits. Even though she does not directly give money to it, she knowingly donates money to a religion that does support prop 8.

SexKitty95 7 months ago
@SexKitty95 Honey, that's actually just written in the Bible, not any of the Mormon texts. Trust me, I've studied those texts and there is nothing in there talking about gays being punished for enternity. Now in the Bible and the Quran there is a fekking LOT about anti-homosexuality, but not in the Book of Mormon.
1pandamanypanda 7 months ago
@grendel1013 You're right. Stephani Meyers tithes to her Anti-Gay Mormon religion. She is forced to give at least 10% of her income to her church. In her case, that's a lot. Mormon tithing funds go to things like Proposition 8 and other religious influences in our government. So all you people that buy Stephanie Meyers products, understand that you're also supporting anything that the Anti-Gay Mormon Church tries to influence, persuade, or push upon with all of it's money. Fact. Look it up.

boring, not detailed characters (the only thing they ever explained was how edward glitters in the sunlight.. :/)

spill crew is alright with their review because for that movie/book he was being overly sensitive about wanting to protect her to the point he was going to pretty much kill himself anyway bella is drawn to him of her own very creepy stalkerish tendencies. and you have no right to tell us what the right and wrong reasons are, however I respect your opinion, I just hate twilight because it paints a nearly 1000 year old being as a creepy stalker and not an assertive forward thinking person.
KanameTousen 1 year ago
@KanameTousen Edward is not sensitive he is a stalker, those things are not connected. Being sensitive means caring about another person's feelings, which is not a bad thing.
feministfrequency 1 year ago 7
@feministfrequency
You can be a stalker and be sensitive
KanameTousen 1 year ago
@KanameTousen I don't agree, not if a person is genuinely "sensitive." Stalking is a form of control and is not consensual.
feministfrequency 1 year ago 28
They can be genuine in sensitivity and still be a stalker, a stalker isn't always as much about control as you believe. There have been cases where a stalker does nothing but watch causing no harm and wanting no control ,just to know that persons safe. And if Edward is a creepy stalker why does Bella not only push away help but end up carrying his child willing?
KanameTousen 1 year ago
@KanameTousen Stalking is absolutely NOT about making sure someone is safe. Stalking is by definition unwanted and obsessive attention. Bella is a fictional character and was written to normalize and romanticize this horrible behaviour, so the audience is supposed to find his behaviour sexy, attractive, romantic, and that is why it's important that we watch/read this story critically to dispel and bring to light the seriousness of this issue.
feministfrequency 1 year ago 253

The real reason why I hate Twilight is because Bella is a completely overly-codependent Mary Sue who simply LIVES for the affection of a creepy stalker and would practically throw away her life and the lives of her loved ones just to be in his presence.
You don't have to be a feminist to hate her.
runrabbit119 1 year ago 10
The biggest thing wrong with Twilight is not that the guys are stalkers (though true). The biggest problem is that women love it, even though they are stalkers! Guys are shown videos of women going crazy over it, told by our female friends how romantic it is, thereby sugesting that men should be something else than logic and decency would dictate. It reinforces they idea that women are not honest about what they want. If Twilight didn't have fans, then millions $ wounldnt be spent to make them.

amandainsurfers 1 year ago
One would think that Mary Shelley might take issue with your aversion to using a horror trope correctly. Wanting a traditionally horrific character type to be traditionally horrific has nothing to do with being misogynistic or homophobic and everything to do with having an opinion about horror. Wanting Edward to be a well adjusted dude, misses the point. He's a vampire that has to live on blood to survive. In case you're not paying attention, that alone makes him creepy and terrifying.
liquiddark 1 year ago
@liquiddark The books/movie are not horror movies, they are romantic dramas so having the "love interest" be a violent, creepy, stalker (who is framed as romantic) is a problem.
feministfrequency 1 year ago 8
@feministfrequency
And that's a problem with the whole franchise.
I agree with your points about him being creepy, overprotective and a stalker, but the fact he's not even fitting to his 'VAMPIRE' characterization is a problem.
Twilight is just badly written in general.

I agree with the criticism of the hatred of Edward, but I would like to add, if he is over 100 years old, I would really hope he would have the emotional and intellectual maturity to move on from highschool.
If I was vampire over 100 years old, I could think of much better company and prey than high school students.
benmconley 1 year ago 8
@benmconley I know this is kind of random and off-topic, but realistically, I would imagine a vampire to be very much like any other 100 year old. They either stop caring about themselves, about other people, about consequences, or all of the above. So theoretically, an immortal would be *more* immature and lacking all impulse control and common courtesy....or would consider people a novelty but no longer have the desire to make social connections for the pain of losing friends. Just my 2 cents.
Nectra 1 year ago 6
@Nectra Can we add pedophile to Edward's negative traits? He may have been physically around the same age as Bella when he died, but he has had at least a hundred more years "life experence" than her. If he had aged to match his years and was "still alive" would it have even been a question that he was a pedophile. Of course not. The simple fact that he is "attractive" does not change what he is. Edward is a creepy stalker pedophile.
lilykep 1 year ago
Agreed. I was actually flabbergasted that Twilight is so successful even here in Europe. Besides it being a rather flat and poorly written story with like gazillions of plotholes it is quite blatantly anti-feminist - and I didn't expect people to be THAT backward. Meh.
MrFalderal 1 year ago 4
I think the reason you present to hate Twilight is not the ONLY reason. Vampire fiction and the lore of the stories is quite extensive. It's been in many cultures for hundreds of years. When Meyers completely dismissed some of the vampire fundamentals, it put a great dampening on what was a once thrilling genre. It's now a sap story. It's "teen fiction" that boasts what love should be, when it's message is entirely wrong and undeniably sexiest. They were two genres not to be mixed.
ohhhlethal 1 year ago 6
I agree for the most part (though I think you're misjudging the male commentary most think he's a sleaze too they just don't articulate it as such) but would also like to commend that Bella is a useless whining, spoiled, obnoxious, manipulative vamp who toys with the feels of others for her own personal benefit and has all the personality and innate positive qualities of a cardboard cut out.
PsyckoSama 1 year ago 6

Calling something gay that is not a male homosexual man, is HOMOPHOBIA.
feministfrequency 1 year ago
@feministfrequency I agree with the bulk of your video. In my previous comment I am referring specifically to your inclusion of "Edward is too sensitive" in the list of wrong reasons to hate twilight.
brs5tettba 1 year ago

So the offensive comments repeatedly stating this (alleged) sensitivity is totally wrong in this situation.
feministfrequency 1 year ago
@feministfrequency No need to restate the over-protective stalker bits. I agree with that. Are you sure that statements berating his sensitivity are comments on his worth as a man? He is clearly a fictional character put forth for our entertainment, and without further evidence of homophobia, I would attribute comments on that attribute to his success as a fictional character, not his success as a man.
brs5tettba 1 year ago
@brs5tettba I'm not even going to spend the time talking about why it's important to be critical of media. But to your other point, yes, I am absolutely sure that statements about his sensitivity are directly related to his worth as a man, and more importantly to any real men who might actually express emotion.

@feministfrequency Why would spend time talking about why it's important to be critical of the media, in a reply thread not remotely related to that subject?
brs5tettba 1 year ago
@brs5tettba Of course I'd be happy to talk about it generally, but it's a given for all the work I do. And it seemed like you were being dismissive of whether it was valid to critique entertainment. If you google "Moff's Law" there is a good response to those who don't think it's worth it to critique pop culture and the media.

Thank you FeministFrequency for voicing why I hate Edward...
DemonicRemption 1 year ago

Thanks for making this. A hundred times yes.

More than the characters being completely 1 dimensional personifications of Stephanie Meyer's victim complex, i'll stick to "the books are written poorer than an elementary school free period creative writing assignment that any decent writer could've spat out in a week."

I should think you'd hate bella more than edward

@jamminjago This video isn't about which character I hate more, it's about the homophobic language used to describe the story.

I hate Twilight because the story is lame, boring, full of clichés, predictable and absurd. And because Edward is a creep and Bella a dumbass.
uminatsuko 1 year ago
@uminatsuko THANK YOU! I completely agree with what people say about Edward but Bella's not at all that good of a character either.
gandrewlee3 1 year ago
As a woman, I would like to add that the reason I hate Twilight is because Bella has based her happiness on her relationship with Edward and has not explored other aspects of her life (friends, family, career, hobbies.....) that are equally important to one's happiness. Happiness does not depend solely on whether or not you have a significant other.
badooney 1 year ago 7
I honestly found Twilight to be incredibly sexist. Bella relies completley on Edward for everything. She also let's Edward boss her around steal her car, tell her how to treat her family and watches her when she sleeps. I don't know why Stephanie Myer finds that amusing, I also don't know why all the girls in my grade find it amusing.

So true. This should be shown to every teen female around the world.
mad8london247 1 year ago 3
I hate twilight because:
>it is a poorly written love novel with bland two dimensional characters.
>it's fan base and how women who follow the novel now, look for the wrong traits in men believing them to be "Edwards".
>its lack of originality, and the originality it does have is lackluster at best.
thought I differ from your views on what feminism should be, I commend the materials you present that offers such vivid debates.
Psp is bugging out, reply was the only way I could post, sorry.
