ok,stecher took drugs, but heres the thing. If she were running today, nobody would notice.Apart from the fact she might not make a major sprint final, she isnt anywhere as near as muscular,or as cut,as todays female sprinters. What we accept today,as "normal"really isnt, and its the same in most sports. If anything,if stecher were competing now,she would look more feminine than many i see lining up at the starters blocks.
I read recently that Stecher is living alone in a tiny public housing estate and is a national disgrace with only her tainted gold medal - which she refuses to give up - as company.
By contrast, Australia recently celebrated Raelene's 60th birthday - hosted by the Australian Prime Minister in front of 1000 people who paid $US200 per head (for charity) to be there.
I know who is the ultimate winner in life - but it is a disgrace that the drug cheat will not hand over the gold to Raelene.
Great that Raelene some 10 years after this event, she was able to go out in a blaze of Glory @31years of age. Her final race was at the Commonwealth Games 1982, winning the 400metres in front of 60.000 people in Brisbane Australia........She is dearly loved and much revered in her homeland
@reeymind ..only by those who dont follow track and field. im sorry but great athlete she was, informed, educated athlete she certainly isnt. her commentary is cringe worthy and her "expert observations" more often than not are ridiculous. she is at best, a simpleton with sprinting genetics.
Yes,History has it and evidence proven that the east german sports clubs used drugs on their athletes. One has to ask did they know, the athletes? They did know they were taking them but were told by the coaches that it was safe.Years later especially the female swimmer who took the drugs had adverse effects from them, like their children were defected and they themselves.
What Raelene said was that Stecher may well have bested her in 100 m without the drugs. But Since Stecher was always on drugs during her international competitons... one will never know.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
boyle herself has stated that stecher was too fast for her stecher was a gr8 champion b4 the steroids were issued to other runners including us athletes or how about the australian swim coach discovered with syringes and steroids so no country is completely clean
Yes in the 100m, she said Stecher would probably have too much speed, even without drugs, but Raelene was great in the 200m, sadly she will never recieve the gold medal whichi s rightfully hers.
I have never seen this race, thanks for posting.. too bad Stecher was a GDR cheat. She really robbed Boyle a chance of superstardom in her native country.
The East German athletes should have been stripped of their medals. Raelene Boyle from Australia was the true champion of these Olympics and she should be awarded a gold medal....nearly 40 years late but better late than never.
Do u live on planet earth anastasi69 ? There is evidence in the stassi files about Stecher's drug taking.. not that there needed to be, the difference between her body from Munich to Montreal is all one needs to see... to know what was going on with her !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why do some people assume stecher was drugged becoz she was east german isnt that racist unlike koch wockel dreschler and gohr stechers times were natural she was simply a powerful sexy women
Irena was clean, a pure sprinter, the real queen oF track and field, Raelene was the Princess, that just was dogged by bad luck ... but she was the best clean sprinter of her generation, no doubt of that ! This is hard to watch at times, because one realizes how close to gold Raelene really was; and what took it from her.. this race should be the poster child against doping !
I read in an athletics magazine in 1980 a close-up of Szewinska running this '72 200m final. She was just rounding off the bend and gazed right into the camera. She had such a steely and determined look in her eyes. She was in motion with the background spectators blurred. It was a glimpse of perseverence and beauty in motion. Have you or anyone seen this picture? I wish I could see this picture again.
Hello! Renate Stecher was the "real champion"... they didn't have universal drug testing then so why a muscular East German is automatically a cheat when a down-home looking Aussie Sheila isn't is pure conjecture and frankly sad......
The Olympic drug testing lab was in East Germany (many people don't realize this) form 1969 to 1991. If one of there athletes would have failed a drug test - they would be kept home. Even if it was the world record holder... there r many stories of GDR athletes being pulled of a plane or sent back or a suddden injury, if their drug test wouldn't clear. GDR had such an advantage over the rest or the world. I mean don't be coy look at Stecher especially in Munich and then Montreal !!
there is evidence against marita koch, heike dreschler and barbel wockel however stecher was b4 them and ther has never been any evidence against her a great champion
Actually there was evidence against Stecher, and Boyle presented it to her live on television. Stasi files that hadn't been destroyed reveal that Stecher was on oral turanibol in the 2 years pior to Munich.
Does anyone know what happened to Renate Stecher and all of the other Eastern Bloc athletes? Szewinska still has a high profile, so does Boyle, but the East Germans in particular seem to have disappeared.
stecher lives in jena and her daughter was a good sprinter too at germany nationals. koch has a sport-shop in rostock. eckert works for the german track and field federation. bodendorf is a coach in magdeburg.
Seriously, there is lots of evidence that GDR athletes were taking truckloads of drugs. However, many other athletes were too. Irena Szewinksa came from an eastern bloc country too, but I don't hear anyone accusing her of being drugged-up. At any rate, if all world records were annulled and started again, you'd be only replacing one set of drug-tainted records with another.
There is a real poignancy about this footage...stay with me while I explain. When you see it now with all that has been revealed about the East Germans and you see how bravely Raelene Boyle's performance (and Szewinska's for that matter) was against insurmountable and unfair odds. What I found moving was the courage and determination they showed despite the inevitable futility of what they were confronting.
buraramo you are right on. raelene boyle was one of the few top athletes of the time who was clean. if she had not had to compete against drug cheats, she would probably have been the top female runner of her era. she was robbed, no doubt about it
Szewinska was my teenage idol. Was she on drugs too? I would be disappointed if she was. Poland was really a eastern-bloc country so she might have been on drugs. The bad thing is, these scandals contaminate others, spilling doubts over supposedly clean ones.
You have a good point there. Other athletes like Kratochvilova, Brisco Hooks and Griffiths-Joyner never failed drug tests or had documented evidence against them but it's pretty obvious that they weren't clean. Imagine stripping Marita koch of her 400m gold to give to the runnerup; Kratochvilova!
Many of these athletes - had coaches and entourages were info was shared - so they all knew, what to take and how to mask it - what would be detected, what meets would have random drug testing etc... and many of the athletes share info amongst themselves. So many were never caught of failed a drug test. But as u say they weren't clean. If u could get the transcripts for the Dubin inquiry .. what came out in that really started WADDA ..but I doubt they will ever catch up
Renate Stecher's greatness.. lies in her drug taking.
