I was there, and it was tragic and fabulous at the same time. For those of you who want a pretty mix, go buy something on Itunes! This was a real concert of friends and family coming together to send on someone we knew and loved. Its a beloved moment in time.
The rest of you. . . shine it on!
Wish someone had Robin Williams routine. I loved his line about Bill being in heaven and telling god how to adjust the colors of the sunset. "NO! you gotta turn up the magenta on that!"
Wow, I'm a a big Neil Young fan but he just plain sucked here. It also seemed like Jerry wasn't really digging him either, but I don't know about that.
This was such a great show.. So many great musicians.. I ended up here only because I got popped for a drunk in public that night.. friend of mine came up and said.. "Dude, we need to go see a show I just heard about". I said cool.. So we headed to SF Polo fields. It amazed me how many performers Bill Graham represented, that performed that day. Awesome day.
I was lucky enough to be there for this -- not the best performance ever, but WAY COOL just to see Neil play with the Dead. I saw Neil do the same song TWICE the night before at the Bridge Benefit at Shoreline. One of them was with Nicolette Larson :)
But at the same time, it's near to heartbreaking to hear a song that Bob Dylan wrote as a blessing for his young children used as a valedictory for a life cut short
They must have gotten a lill toasty and thought "Lets play Forever Y-o-u-n-g" "Get it Neil? Like your last name!" "We will blow some minds with this one"
I was at this show and whoever is ragging about the 'rough spots' must not have been. Crosby,Stills,Nash,AND Young got together, Credence was there, or at least John Fogerty. Even bands like journey got back together for it, Tracey Chapmen was there, and tony mcalpine , and many more i dont recall right now. Even Robin Williams made a couple jokes. The dead show was great with not only Neil coming out but also Fogerty to play 4 CCR songs with the Dead anda very lucky John Popper on the harmonica.
this song brings to many memories how 10 years pass by GOD... I have kept something hidden for so long now that even at my worst of times still hold that piece of my past intact so much that one day when I die it will be in the will and it will be given still to his children... because I know how much a heart weights so thanks GOD For ever YOUNG!
...while Jerry never really gets his groove on (perhaps chasing the dragon this night), this was still very sweet. Much mutual respect between Neil and Jer. Gone are the days :(
A note to any/all who are ragging on the rough spots in the 11/3/91 recordings: this free show in Golden Gate Park was organized on very short notice to pay tribute to Bill Graham, who had died suddenly in a helicopter crash. Nobody has rehearsed!! The event was special because it was an extended community coming together spontaneously for purely human needs, not show biz.
@younwhosarmy people can do what they want and look up to whom ever they want, no one is to say that being a "junkie" is not the correct path in life, no one is to say that being "normal" is really normal. Anyone who has the balls to choose their own way of life is a damn good person in my opinion.
@retsinred Thank you! Note smn9ac psycho message comparing dislike rating to Hitler. I love Neil Young. I love the Dead. Probably I should not have rated this video at all. Still, Neil's performance is below his fabulously high standards.
Agree with LedZeppelin362 that Neil and Jerry don't seem on same wavelength. But LedZ, why did you think the Hitler stuff was "so true"?
@retsinred Jerry's guitar is only awesome only because it always is no matter what. Its a little too weak in sporadic in my opinion, but its still sweet to hear Neil Young singing my favorite JGB song ever!
@mase5701 Agree. I should not have hit dislike. Who can "dislike" these geniuses on stage together? Still, I do "not like" (there is a difference) this video of them doing much less than their best. Sorry about that.
I was driving up the I-5 from San Deigo as this concert took place, heading home to the Bay. There were 7 RAINBOWS one over another , over the whole San Jouquin Valley that day.............thanks for posting these videos, so I can see what I didn't get to see !
Lots of great music that day celebrating the life of Bill Graham. I remember being in the crowd listening to the music from the stage and the simulcast which I am pretty sure was on KFog. I hope that is still a rock and roll station.
I was there that day. I looked overhead and there was a plane with "Otis Spunkmeyer" (cookies) written on the underside of the wings. As I looked up, I saw objects raining down. I thought, " They can't be dropping cookies out of the plane!" They weren't. Coming down, seemingly in slow motion, were what must have been thousands of clipped red carnation flowers. All just floating down. I think that it was about the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
@silentdreemz85 he doesn't deserve to tie jerrys shoes let alone scold his volume...the guy is an angry canook....yeah he wrights great songs lots of assholes have rip jerry
@Toppersbazaar you couldnt be more right. I have a feeling that neil young never respected or cared for the dead whatsoever.....hes just another person to laugh at in my eyes....he was jelous of the fanbase jerry had, something he will never have.
brent was the man on key borad see the way him and jerry looked at each othe i know vince is in the band now miss them both now that the singer is gone who do we turn to for songs let there b music to fill the air
what a perfect song :) ~ to be honest they could have just stood there on the stage together and it still would have been a life shifting moment (: .. MISS YA JERRY BEAR!!!!!
