A bit more on Jo Stafford. She was part of the Pied Pipers in the early '40s, the vocalists with Tommy Dorsey's orchestra who backed Sinatra on many of his early hits. Her voice clearly stands out on those recordings. She also was on the gorund floor when Johnny Mercer founded Capitol records. When she went solo after the War, her arranger was Paul Weston, whose orchestra backed her many hits in the early '50s. They married and stayed together til he passed in 1996. She was truly great!
This was all over the radio in the summer of 1952. It sold over 2 million copies and was the #1 song for the entire year. Jo Stafford had perfect pitch and a most unusual voice. She retired from show business in 1969 and passed away in July 2008. I got her home address in 1998 and wrote her a fan letter about hearing her songs while growing up in Newark NJ. She sent back a signed 8 X 10 along with a handwritten note. Real classy lady! My favorite from that era.
@philotimos923 -- Yes, that was a very classy response! I just looked her up on IMDB.com before I read your comment, and there I learned Jo Stafford passed in 2008. So sad to find that great talent has passed, so thank goodness for YouTube!
This is the first time I ever heard her sing this...right now. It's amazing! Why don't we hear much about her? I've only heard her name a few times in my life. That's a tragedy.
Check out "Kenny Ray" to hear other songs by Chilton Price. She kept right on writing music like "You Belong to Me" up until her death a year ago. Kenny does a great one called "I've Forgotten You".
One of my favorites! Back when the artists could really sing. I accidentally heard the Carla Bruni version. She really shouldn't sing this song. Ms. Stafford's voice is so clear and beautiful. Thank you so much for posting this!
I believe this was the second No 1 when the Hit Parade began in the UK in 1952, the first one being Al Martino's Here in my Heart. Magic stuff all of it
i simply love her vocals. ive always been a jo stafford fan. this is music and harmony at its very best. the alledged "music" of today is nothing more then obnoxious sounds mixed with poorly trained voices. haha even with vocal trainers at thier side the artists of today are simply that, untrained, non talented, self proclaimed vocalist. sot on to Mrs. Jo Stafford.
I first heard this as a Rock & Roll song by the "Duprees", I also have Dean Martin singing it. It's quiet a 'STANDARD". It was a war=time song. Saying good=bye when we meant SO LONG. Beautiful, melody, harmony & rhythm where it belongs. The girl friends of the soldiers & sailors thank you. Peace via Music VIVA MARIA
Did my parents have time to even listen to this great song in 1952? And - 8 or 9 years later, when the Duprees came out with this fabulous song, didn't they tell me to "turn down that radio"? - wow -what a song. -
This excellent song , exquisitely sung by the incomparable Jo Stafford really does stand the test of time. The visuals are also superb, and capture the spirit of the 40s/50s. Many thanks for posting this.
My oh my. Compare this marvelous voice with the so-called singers of today who wander all over a high note with ah-ah-ahs, wha-wha-whas, and other obnoxious cover-ups of lousy voices. Listen to this pitch! What an ear! What incredible voice control! Just brilliant! I just love her.
Wonderful Ms Stafford found you again, I had forgotton the many wonderfull renditions that I Loved so many years ago. YOU TUBE AND SUBSCRIBERS, many thanks from an old geezer
A true vocal masaterpiece, by my Parents all-time #1 female singer. I grew up- to this song, & I never, ever tire of it; the arrangement--that vocal--timeless. Wolfsky9
The original recording of ''You Belong To Me'' by Jo Stafford took the no. 1 position on the charts and held it for five consecutive weeks beginning the second week of September 1952.
This was great, Logan! I'm working on several now; one of them is called Burning Out with the song Famous Last Words by My Chemical Romance. If u want, listen to the song and tell me what u think. Once again, love your vid!!!

I agree fully. The standard of musicianship and singing from that era was quite brilliant, and
Jo Stafford's performance here exemplifies this. Thanks for posting.
