  • Warner Brothers Records at one time sold what they called "loss leader" albums through the mail. For $1 per 12 inch vinyl record, you could get collections of songs from their artists. A friend of mine ordered many of these loss leaders, around 1970, and this song was on one of them. I thought about it today, this being Christmas eve for me, and thought I'd look for it her on YT. Thank you jguth3 for posting this song. You made my day!

  • I love this song. Today he should sing as "Santa Claus wears a red suit must be a SOCIALIST"

  • i remember this song when i was younger

  • Man, I love this song :) Thanks for the posting.

  • Nice song,great singer

  • "Arlo" is on CD!? YES!.. probably my favourite album of his, I only had access to it on an 8track that was my fathers..... unfortunately all our players died (without bein' met at the bottom of a mountain by a flying-singing-writing-weirdo-freak!)

and the tape itself has since disappeared into the mists of.. well it's probably in the garage somewheres.

  • I first heard this song digging through my fathers old real to real tapes around 1990. I've been looking for this for a long time. Thanks man.

  • so much deeper then you'd think

  • Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone.

  • was stealin' written about you? lol (serious question)

  • "Stealin'" is an old song the Memphis Jug Band recorded on Sept. 15, 1928. It's a blues standard that has been covered by a LOT of different folks, Arlo, David Bromberg, and the Grateful Dead just being three that come to mind immediately.

  • Merry New Year too you too, mickindanny! Or something like that.

Happy holidays right back at you and everyone. Maybe we'll all get it right this time with peace on Earth and goodwill towards everybody.

  • Well, now I have my channel all Guthried up for Christmas! Come & see! It's 4:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning; Arlo Time! Happy Holidays everybody!

  • I can remember first hearing this on an 8 track found in my folks basement, and when I was real young'n asking my dad to get "the album with the motorcycle song" from the library! (back when the libraries in Oakville, ON had VINYL!). likely the early 80's. such a great talent I've really come to love and I hope to get to see him live soon, I've also gained an appreciation of Pete Seeger by way of his and Arlo's work together. Thank you for sharing the song, pictures and story, wonderful stuff

  • Thank you for posting this, and thanks to the person who emailed me where to find it...might have been easier if I'd had the title right - LOL. I agree that one of the things that makes Arlo's music timeless and joyful is the humor in it. That, and how timely many of the songs are, even though they were written decades earlier. I'll be playing this one all Christmas day, the way my friends and I all play "Alice's Restaurant" every Thanksgiving.

  • That's what attracted me to Arlo's music is his sense of humour. The story telling is an amazing gift. The story that you put in this description is a definite value added, thanks for sharing that, Jackie.

Come to think of it, you must have heard some interesting stories in response to "Your supper is cold now, where have you been?"

  • Arlo's Great!!

  • This is hilarious! thanks for pposting this.

    Mark

  • Arlo you Rock~!!!

  • YES ARLO FOR PRESIDENT!!! Merry Cmas Jackie!

Thank you for sharing this story!

  • I love Arlo, when was this made? cool...

    Peace!

  • ROTFLOL

Arlo always makes me laugh when he wants and think when he wants, thanx for putting him up here

  • For about as long as I can remember, my mom sang this to us at Christmas. Thanks for getting it onto YouTube!

  • Thanks Jackie...What a wonderful story! and of course a Great Song!

    Lily

  • There need to be more christmas songs like this

  • Can you tell us the backstory? I've been been a fan of Arlo's since I heard him do Ghost Riders in the Sky back in Stockbridge when he was about in ninth grade or so. There's a backstory to that too. Season's Greeting's from Joady Guthrie's part of the world. . .

  • Sorry. I'm slow. I see the link. I guess I'm off there. . .

  • Outstanding....great backstory...This is the first time I've heard this song. I hope you guys are all doing great and hopefully I'll get a chance to see Arlo live sometime in the future.

  • LoL !!! My First Time! =)

  • Great video! I always loved this song!
