I think it was a good ambush they were positioned well and started with a volley of grenades and followed with small arms fire. They were clearly out of the russians line of fire.

There about 500 meters away! Paras and special forces can move quick emulating the fire power of a company. Thats there role on the battlefield as reccon. All they need to do is shoot in there direction and send a group either to the left or right of them. Im not sure how armies in your countrys fight but thats very very basic stuff.

Cover as in those trees or the ditch near it, spetsnaz would easily see where the shots are coming from and flank them. Thats what the shots are there for, to keep there heads down whilst the rest of the patrol flanks. Thats SOP in the infantry, Spetsnaz GRU would probably flank then on both sides.
