Dennis Rodman and Charles Oakley were defensive players that didn't get many shot attempts so that was a bad example. J.R. Smith has the potential to be an All-Star but he has terrible shot selection and doesn't always play a team game. He can shoot the lights out when he's hot but he can also shoot his team out of a game on any given night. By the way, JOSH Smith is the player that attempted the between the legs dunk not J.R..

I aint comparing the two. MJ is GOAT hands down. Anybody to argue that statement is an actual goat. What I am saying, however, is that players in general have gotten stronger, faster, quicker, better. And as a result, competition has gotten better. Now just like the past, there are always teams who just completely suck, but at the elite levels competition has gotten better. I would take the '04 Pistons over the late 80s Bad Boys anyday.

for those of you that say that mj was great because he played against worse defense. check out jordan in his 40's againts the celtics a couple years back. he scored 30 something points! he was 40+ yrs old! come on! his last year he scored 40+ points in one game, which is a league record. don't get me wrong, i think kobe is the best player in the league right now, but jordan is the best of all times.

how so? The top 10 guards increased scoring by 23% after they banned hand checks, they call way more fouls and flagents, Dwight Howard, who would be the 6th or 7th best center in the 90s is the 2nd best in the 00, teams don't play as hard, ect. I can go on and on about how much worse this era is than the 90s.

I have to say Celtics defense was smart tactic and yes there were so many uncalled fouls on Celtics, that could dictate the games and could have been Lakers 1st ring without Shaq..
But if a team relies on fouls calls to win is such stupid..
Even without the calls the Lakers still lost anywayz...
I am a laker fan but thats the truth no excuse...
However if it was Lakers vs Boston instead of Magic in 2009, I bet my salary money on Lakers !

I've always said that Boston won that series outright. I give all props to them, but what don't respect is the bandwagon jumpers that started to sport Celtic green after a decade and a half of not being seen. And what's worse than those types are the folks that talked so much noise last year, but can't give it up after we served some cold revenge and beat the teams they couldn't. Even with a healthy Garnet, they were still behind a Laker beast with Odom, Bynum, Gasol, Fisher, Ariza, and Kobe.

Maybe you should've also taken a look at a few of Jordans games before comparing the two defences.
Kobe's just too obsessed with going to the rim, that he forgets his team-mates and that he can't run over defensive players...

listening to your whining about "omg he had to face a zone defence" makes me want to scream!
The zone is one of the basic plays in basketball, and to get around it you only have to be A TEAMPLAYER! Kobe could've gotten easy shots for his team, but he was too reluctant to relinquish the ball.
Granted, Jordan almost never played against zones, but it wasn't "watered-down isolation defence" The intensity was way higher than what the celtics played. And he had double and triple-teams w/o zone D.

I can tell this guy has never played basketball before. It's called team defense, and it has been around since the 1950s. It's about clogging the drive lanes, help defense, ect. That has been going on as long as basketball has. And if you watch Jordan in the 80s and 90s, he was being double and triple teamed. And watered down my ass. After removing hand checks in 00, the top 10 guards increased scoring by 23% and FG% by 4%. 2000s are a joke. BRING BACK HAND CHECKING

Jordan had it easy, KOBE HAD IT EASY. New Jersey, 1 man team, Indiana 1 man team, Philly 1 man team. And in 00 &01, he had pretty bad series in which is ppg and fg% where way down. Jordan played teams w/ multiple superstars (barkely & k johnson, johnson & worthy, porter & drexler, stockton & malone, payton & kemp) that's just the guys who made all nba. Almost all of them had an additional one or two that made the all-star team. O what where you saying about how jordan had it easy?

While I'll admit he never faced a team like boston or detroit in the finals, Utah, LA, and Seattle all had players on the all defense team and he dominated all of them. He lost to boston and detroit back when they all had 3 HOFers and he was a one man team. Once they gave him some support, he beat the bad boys, and faced real physical teams like NY and the 1st 3 pear Pistons where great. Kobe never had to play in an era as physical as the 80s and 90s

1. Pistons, Celtics, Lakers, and 76ers all had 3-5 HOFers on their rosters. I don't care if a team had a 7'7" 50% 3 point shooter with a 60 inch vertical, nobody can win a championship without teammates in the 80s
2. Pistons were the same team in the 91-93 time as they where before. Isiah was in his late 20s, Dumar was very good still, the Bulls where just better. Factor in the hawks, Knicks, and Magic, and the early 90s east was much harde

LOL. You're talking about a Knicks team with one 7ft HOFer, starting Charles Oakley, and Anthony Mason, rotated with Charles Smith at the SF position! None of them had a 3pt shot, or even a reliable jumper. The Pistons were washed up, being led by 5'11/6'3 guards and Bill Laimbeer and John Sally as their bigs? I dont even wanna talk about the Hawks. Besides the Magic, the other 3 teams had no talent or height in in the front and backcourt simultaneously. Dont tell me teams were harder 15yrs ago

1. The Knicks had one of the best defenses buddy. Oakley was like Rodman, Ewing is a legend, and starks was a great scorer
2. Isiah was in his early 30s and Dumar was in his prime, they were not washed up, and they won in the 80s with those bigs
3. the hawks had 3 all stars in wikins, willis, and rivers, but never played to their potential
teams played more physical, more intense, and with less fouls 15 years ago. They had more talent and more hustle than teams today do

Larry Nance was the same height as Dwight Howard. Talent is not the same as athletic ability buddy. I mean, Dwight Howard is extremely rare, yet is clearly the best center in the NBA. In the 90s, Hakeem, Robinson, Shaq, Ewing, and Zo would all be better players than Dwight, plus their where many others that where defensive beasts
