Modern assualt rifles have extreme ranges, it would not be that difficult with one.... ffs. However, back then ^ somebody is right about the British. They were trained to fight in formations, standing toe to toe.. they werent prepared for what was to come by the militias here in the States. Men that are always trained and used to formations, will naturally become confused when ambushed from multiple locations. This movie wasn't all inaccurate.
Mel Gibson said: "This is not historically accurate. In the broad strokes, yes - on other levels, it is sheer fantasy. It's a good thing that historians are going to harangue this and say, 'It's not accurate.' Good. It'll make somebody pick up a book."
Maybe those viewers of this video who believe the british were dummies should do so - pick up a book on the subject of the war and learn a bit. :)
Anybody notice the British soldier at 1:15 that kept running even though his friend got Tomahawked by Mel Gibson and he didn't even realize he was surrounded?
Perhaps I'm wrong, but one thing that never quite convinced me about this movie is the way the british soldiers behave when being ambushed... I mean, look at that, they seem totally disoriented and without a clue about what to do. Surely they had better preparation than that? Surely someone would have taught them to take cover? Or not? Anyway, it always looks so easy in the movie that I get the feeling not all is quite correct there.
@beckerqueiroz I totally agree with you but throughout the film Mel Gibson in all his glory as a director made the British look like fools anyway because for some reason he hates them so he wanted the audience to see them get massacred i guess
Actually he points out near the beginning of the movie that the British are professional open field rifleman. They line up, and fire, again and again with skill and precision.
That was how people fought back then. It was more like a duel with many more lives.
Also no one had tried that before (at least in this scenario). And what would you do if you had 5 seconds to respond?
I"M NOT TRYING TO RAG ON EITHER OF YOU! I just wanted to say something is all. :)
@Weirdo7310 It's more so not so much a matter of racism or what not, if that's what your implying, if not my apologies. But yeah, it's more so just fueling what the people want to see. We dont want accurate... and to the point historical. The people want to see bloodshed and Mel Gibson covered in it like in Brave Heart. lol.
@beckerqueiroz The British Army was never trained to fight against guerrilla warfare. They were trained in open field, line warfare. So, when they are attacked like that, they don't know what to do. They were never trained for it.
@sarge958 Hmm, is that a fact? Maybe they had no proper academy training, but they ought to be experienced enough, having fought all kinds of wars against all kinds of peoples. Maybe they wouldn't be able to 'follow the book', but damn, they were british soldiers! I find it hard to believe they would just stand in the middle of nothing and get killed. It is very unlikely, not matter what.
@beckerqueiroz Perhaps they seem so disoriented precisely because they were ambushed. I mean, they would'nt know where the attack was coming from..so were probably looking all around the spot their ambushers. As for their preparation, those were the early days of guns..so their preparation must have been primitive at best.
@architcooldude Well, those were certainly NOT the early days of guns, and their preparation was by no means primitive. Look into the matter and you will end up being forced to agree.
@beckerqueiroz The British were ALWAYS used to line formation fighting not hit and run ambushes like shown.Thats why they act the way they do the movie is actually semi accurate when it came to the ambushes.
@beckerqueiroz the militia fired at the officers first to make sure the British line infantry would be disoriented and defencless, back then it was all about discipline and organised fire, if no one is there to give those key elements, the battle is lost.
@ww2guy100 Ermm try our Rifle Units like the Royal Green Jackets, the first troops to utilize the concept of camoflauge uniforms and expert skirmishers and Light Infantry like the 52nd of Foot (of Waterloo fame). The Line Infantry and Grenadier Companies may have fought muzzle to muzzle but the LI and Rifles did not.
@beckerqueiroz It might be true. the militia were taught in real life to kill British commanders to confuse the troops and also i don't if the British ever had experience with guerrilla warfare before which might help to better explain why they act clueless
@beckerqueiroz actually no, organized armies as the British were, were never equipped training wise to handle guerrilla style warfare. The American frontiersmen always out handled the British in this respect. Same was true with Andrew Jackson when the British were occupying parts of Louisiana.
@beckerqueiroz This movie is kinda idealized. But according to what I've learned about War for Independence, British soldiers was shocked by guerilla tactics of militia. They were trained to fight on open field, formed in ranks and firing large salvos, then make bayonet charge. But militias were ambushing them mostly in forests, where British weren't able to conduct such combat they were trained.
@beckerqueiroz Actually, British soldiers, trained to fire in formations, were much less accurate in dispersed combat than militiamen, which were mostly hunters, hunting all life in forests around and able to master their rifles - in 7th August, 1777, British general Simon Fraser, riding around on horse and encourageing his men, was killed by a man named Tim Murphy from range of nearly 275 meters by Kentucky long rifle. Quite a performance - even with modern assault rifle, it would be difficult.
@RayPall i believe he said something like they couldnt hit an elephant from this range and to stop running from one bullet and what will they do when the whole regiment started to shoot at them, then he got picked off ahahahha
@Weirdo7310 Maybe that Tim Murphy was historically first true sniper x))
But even British were astonished by accuracy of US militiamen. Some Brit said that they were able to hit a card nine times by ten shots from range of 150 yards (about 140 meters). Combine that with knowledge of terrain and deep forests and you have bloody trap for British soldiers.
In fact, militamen were fighting like today - individually seeking cover, relocating between each shot and avoiding combat in open field.
@Weirdo7310 That was John Sedgwick in the American Civil War. He was a major General in the Union.(highest ranking officer to die in the American Civil war) He was shot from 900 meters away and it was a head shot.
@beckerqueiroz He may of over done the confusion that the British had, but they had never faced this kind of warfare and did not have really any great plans to stop ambushes. They were used to just standing in a line and firing at another line of men.
@beckerqueiroz The British thought that hiding and taking cover was cowardly. Thats what the Patriots used to their advantage. One rule of warfare back then next to "Dont shoot the officer' was "Do not hide" Thats also how they nearly lost the French and Indian war.
@beckerqueiroz It's because the British weren't familiar with Guerrilla warfare. They were trained in line formations, and only in line formations. Ambushing was a totally new concept in the civilized world that the Americans adapted from the Indians.
Only reason why usa won (I wouldnt even say they won). Is because Great Britain was too busy going to war against France. usa wasnt even a super power and still isnt a super power.
@DarkPrinceNH5570 Are you stupid? "You wouldn't even say we won." If we hadn't have won, we would still be a British Colony you dip shit. Also, yes we are a super power. So it Britain, China, Russia, and a few others.
Whatever... usa got thier asses kicked in Vietnam like this but with better weapons and strategy. Now they know whats up.
Forming their little firebases in the jungles and shit. Charlie whooped their asses!
Germany won WW2!!! Not going to explain that one either. Holy shit... usa is just in a world of hurt ever since they got disowned by the Royal families.
I love how at the first scene the redcoats are thinking 'hmm, I can hear a Frenchman, our greatest enemy, yelling "take aim" out here in an area perfect for an ambush whilst we are carrying supplies vital to the war effort. Nah, it's nothing.'
Perhaps, we will never know. You all must realize the british executed people who didn't pay their taxes and other reasons, and you think shooting men who surrendered (Whom would run away and report the Americans positions to their superiors) is wrong? OH and guerilla warfare is much more effective than standing in THE OPEN and firing at your enemy shoulder to shoulder, ripe for snipers. Suck it up we were the more superior force.
@Oesterreich1156 The British slaughtered Colonists if they didn't pay their taxes. They also killed wounded Americans. I'd say that this is justified. Even during this movie, they burned down a church full of townsfolk. Who's the assholes again?
@sarge958 You shouldn't take it for granted that history was just like in the movies... Maybe you would find it interesting to check this link: studythepastdotcom/patriotreviewdotpdf where they analyse the historical accuracy (should I say, inaccuracy) of The Patriot. The farm and church burning episodes are invented and fit into the movie only to make you hate the british even more.

@Grunt922 I would not mind storming the the South Lawn with fellow my fellow Americans. Personally to me Washington needs to learn its place under the boot of the American people pressing on the fed's neck.
@MysticFangz Actually I'm a Libertarian and you are one to talk you Left-Wing nutjob protesting against Wall Street when it is Washington who are spending billions in tax payers money that put us into debt. As usual you blame the rich and want them to be taxed more when the rich already pay more in taxes than anyone else.
@Grunt922 I agree with you sir, with our current situation at hand and all the debt and failure of the government to take action, it looks like a French Revolution style takeover could happen at any time. The question is when will people grow tired and decide to rebel against the government, cause I'm locking all my doors to my house when that day arrives.
@GSPatton89 Great Britain was under the string of the Rothschild, now, Washington D.C is under the string of Rothschild and other bank cartels since 1913. Andrew Jackson kick their ass too when he killed 2nd bank of the U.S but it was resurrected. It's time for the new generation of Americans to continue the war against the real enemy: Federal reserve bank and it's corporate cronies. Maybe next time they need a bill to keep any private banks in the country, permanently.
