Everything about this piece was stunning. What shook my soul the most was the background. The decayed remains of a once advanced society so casually, and thus mysteriously, ignored by what seems to be a 17th century English society which has managed to apply robotics to everyday trials. Blade Runner had a similair effect on me as I couldn't help wondering; what are all of the protagonists in this short film? Could they be machines that once served their creators.
The is regret, industry is a big thing and to harm it or not bring advancement into being, then affects everyone; we see a loss of a new thing that was never brought into being. Japanese merges spirits, like catgirl, it really is a girl who has a cat; but once created the stories take a life of their own for the drama--do not harm the cat. Anyway, we see a loss of something, and we see regret.
Thanks for posting this! I remember watching it on the sci-fi channel when I was 10. I'm glad I was able to find/watch it again and have a better grasp on what it's about.
The man lived his life deprived of any real sense of emotion (e.g. never knew his mother, distant from his family, etc.) He lives in a society of humans and machines. When he creates the girl, he realizes that she's capable of feeling and he destroys her out of fear of developing any emotional attachment; this incident remains in his consciousness. In his old age, her spirit comes to accompany him to the next existence. I'm pretty sure there's more, but that's all I can fit in this box.
fell in love with this in the early '90s. scifi channel used to show robot carnival like once a year. it was dubbed, she says,"I'm still waiting for my prince to rescue me from my solitude." still love it!-phoenix
Yeah, actually the dub was pretty great for a early 90's Anime. The subtitling here is... spectacularly subpar. It really ruins what I remember of this sentimental film.

I'm not gonna lie. I didn't see the meaning of this. Maybe it's the god awful subtitles. Thanks to mleliza3 for the explanation of the symbolism.

The character designs and movement of the figures is really weird and off-putting. Intentionally?

Yeah, I'd say try to ignore the subs completely. I think the story plays out pretty well even without the dialog.
I like mleliza's take on the ending: "In his old age, her spirit comes to accompany him to the next existence."
But I'd add the element of her forgiving him, so he can finally find peace.

The subbing on this version is horrible. They didn't understand the language and just did literal translations. Fail.

This is such a GREAT short film. I remember watching this back in the early 90s. Beautiful, haunting, both the story and the music.
I just wish the subtitling here was up to par. I remember the dub being spectacular.
