  • Not a Cunard fan but fan of HAL but I love these old footage thanks fore sharing.

  • The old timey kitty cat was the best......

  • there was no man without a beard

  • Wow!! look at their faces just like us today!.... But different clothes style in their very old times... They were in the miserable times, but worth it!

  • those women at 203 to 217 while waiting for camra to roll, they looked cold and miserable...

  • Amazing film and the quality is incredible. The first scene shows the tender taking passengers out to the anchored Cunard liner. As for the open air bridge, that was a common design feature on ships from tha late 19th Century. That is why it is called a 'bridge'. It was an open deck supported on either side. There may have been a protected lower bridge beneath it. At the beginning of the 20th Century, most liners had enclosed or partially enclosed bridges.

  • Interesting that the bridge is not enclosed.

  • Amusing how they can't take their eyes off that 'new-fangled camera thing'. Great post, thank you.

  • @LMatters1 Notice how a lot of them stand still waiting for their picture to be taken? lol They didn't know that you could move about.

  • Ladies and gentleman all aboard the Titanic....no cover charge!

  • at 1.50 is that the ships cook i wonder if he cooked the cat for dinner lol...

  • moustache moustache everyone loves a moustache

  • When I go o to the BFI site to watch the promised 1500 films I can't seem to find a play button anywhere, on any page? Help!!!

  • incredible that all this people have long been dead

  • how wonderful... one of the men coming off the ship at the start looks so much like my great grandfather who lived in Liverpool at the time, would love to know if it's him!

  • @misscupcake i think they were going onto a small vessel to take them on to a liner probarbly these people were all destined for ellis island. their ancestors are more than likey americans now.

  • Amen, MaryOMackie, we are blessed to have these films in this day and age of confusion.

  • Any one of these people could be your ancestors... isn't that so crazy?! It's so awesome, especially when you research your family, it just makes it feel more realistic :) It's so wonderful, it makes me want to cry.

  • thanks for this! human memory is so short, even two generations is about equal with the stone age! we're the first generation who's been able to see even a hundred years into the past, and that's time travel if ever there was such a thing

  • I think maybe we are closer to the stone age than the kindly folk here..... I wish I could talk with these people to see how much has changed culturally. (But We do have insight from their writings.)♥♥♥

  • @franl155 this is why its so important to take pictures and videos. this is like 110 years ago, wow.

  • I have no idea these people speak English and I can understand them!

  • @franl155 your comment is silly. 200 years ago, someone would have said the same about the Irish. Then 200 years earlier, about the Scottish. Then 1400 years ago, about the Romans...just realize that you're not going to be walking around for too long and enjoy everything the world has to offer.

  • what a relief that these marvellous images were not lost forever, and were miraculously found in that shop basement.

  • I love Mitchell and Kenyon, but there's a way better BBC documentary about them, this woman's voice does my nut in.

  • it's like going back in time and seeing ones great and great great ancestors. my grandparents were either infants very young children or not yet born when this came out.

  • that last shot of the captian with the stern of another ship was simply amazing. thanks for sharing

  • i had a job in a petrol station often we used to get famous people on the forecourt.

one evening a big flash car pulled in for some fuel.i went out to serve , a very distinguished gent got out "fill the tank " he said

i looked at him "nice car " said i

    "yes" he said

    i still didnt recognise him

"to have a car like this you must have a good job" says i

"yes" he said"i am the captain of the QE 2 liner,i work for Cunard"

"well" i said "i work like a cunt but i cant afford a car like this"!!

  • hahaha..badoom chink!

  • God Bless the souls of our ancestors!!!

  • Every one of those people is dead. From then until now, it was just a moment in time. 2109 is only a blink away.

  • And one second at a time.

  • Indeed, even the cat.

It's like another planet. Even the last living memories of those days are now quite distant.

You can perceive an innate order and discipline people had by absorbing these motion pictures. When I watch dramas on TV that are set in this period, the attitudes filmmakers have their characters portray do not remotely resemble what I intuitively observe in these films.

  • Fascinating to look at the people in those days.

  • some serious moustaches there !

  • As I understand, Captain Smith spent 35 years with White star, therefore starting in 1877, but still worth checking out..

Yes I too thought of looking at ghosts, will people look at us in film and photo and think of us as ghosts I wonder.

  • It's like watching ghosts.

  • Comment removed

  • wow that captain looks like E.J Smith Captain of Titanic. would love to know if im right. :)

  • yes he does,doesn't he?

  • pause at 1:33 then open new window, google image search captain smith. very very similar if you ask me.

  • i checked that and yes you are right,he does look very similar to him.

  • This is supposedly a Cunard vessel. As I recall, the Titanic was a White Star vessel. Unless Smith switched employers, it's not him.

  • hmmmm i know that, but im just basing it on the fact he looks just like him.

  • Captain Smith was with White Star Line, not Cunard...

  • i know.........

  • More of the Mitchell and Kenyon collection on my page. Thanks for uploading this because now I won't have to.

  • the BFI;and all you have posted is 186 vids? should be thousands!

  • Maybe the little baby stayed in the USA? S/he'd have lived through two World Wars and the cultural revolution of the 'Sixties. She sure saw a lot of change...
