My apologies for anything that I have said a few years ago in regards to El-P's abilities as an emcee. Is he Eyedea? No. But he is still one of the best cats to ever grab a mic. I was uninformed when I made those comments.
Slightly above average means that 45% of rappers are better than El-P.. Thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard..and I like everything from Project Pat to Black Moon to J-Zone to Aesop Rock.
@TairyHesticles Critic Steve Huey describes him as "one of the most technically gifted MCs of his time, spitting out near-impossible phrases and rhythmic variations that simply leave the listener's head spinning." - Thats pretty much everyones' opinion of his rhymes. Hey Tairy, whos spits bars more tech than EL-P? I would love to hear a match of his skills if you think someone does it better dude....? LMK!
El is a talented Musician. From Company Flow Till now, regardless of his voice or how it sounds.Dude rips it.Beats, and the topics he runs by us.All in all, El is a sick musician,emcee/rapper,slash producer/beat maker, slash whatever you wants to put it as.dude is fkin dope!! period.
I love El-P's voice. There's this raw honesty that just draws me in. But, I also like Billy Corgan & Dave Matthews' voices, and I know a lot of people that can't get into Smashing Pumpkins or DMB strictly because they hate the voice. I'd also argue those saying that El is simply average, or slightly above average, though I'll concede that personal preference plays into it. The way he words things just clicks for me, hard to explain I guess. This is one of my all-time favorite tracks, though.
@TairyHesticles i think you can argue that his flow and or delivery makes him less accessible, which is a fair assessment because it is completely unorthadox how he tries to squeeze a million things into 5 seconds of a song. however to say hes just an above average emcee i think is selling him short. if you take his lyrics out of a song, its honestly poetry and that makes his replay value off the charts for anyone who can appreciate his flow and delivery
first of all, synth rap isnt something to be all fronted against, all rap was synth until 1986 and synthesized rap is important par of hip hop history that was made way before boom bap. second, modern day hip hop from south have absolutely nothing to do with "trailer park" culture, that is more Eminem type of people, and even Eminem have roots in this "indie rap" for white folks that need to hear emcee's "emotional struggle" to even rate him, as we see right here. emo bullshit
@borchabronx I own and have an affinity for vintage and modern synths, bitch. I don't need a history lesson on hip hop from some internet doucher who thinks he knows everything. well ok then dont bash synths and its ok. thats first. second, if kids at trailer parks rock Gucci and Wizzy, thats some improvement on Eminem's music. obviously, modern rap often isnt hard, but its evidently more fun, communicative, direct and yes often more hard than pseudo-intellectual crap put out by people of Anticon, Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Babygrand etc etc, that relies on multi-syllable bullshit, crappy beats and rhyming about fucked up world and complicated relations.
@borchabronx I never "bashed" synths. I'm bashing stupid music. "Artists" like Little Wayne and Gucci make music for the lowest common denominator. @override261 it's a song about break up, a bit hard to decipher but you have to listen to it a couple times or read the lyrics and analyze em in order to understand it, i actually never fully understood it, or i guess never fully related to it, until this one time when i shroomed it for the first time and realized it related so much to my prior relationship which had ended about 3 mo.'s b4 my shroom trip, it hit the heart but definitely brought some closure to me and helped me understand better
Time is out of joint is also a famous phrase from Shakespeare's
play Hamlet.
Amazing how well written the track is, this is one of the hardest things in life to deal with.... No longer talking or communicating in any way with someone who was a part of your life, perhaps your everything, for such a long time.
El-P has shown how to press diamonds with his paranoia.
Oh yeah and that prison ship thin on ill sleep when youre dead i didnt like that either but mostly everything else oh yeah that i tryed to warn you part on lazerface that parts annoying but everything else..yeah
Elp is not the best rapped alive or even close im sure he'll admit that, but he is definetly one of the best artist available today and for that he gets my attention and i am a fan, noone out there is doing what he's doing on a regular basis other than high water i can't say he failed once
This is great, but I do feel that he is a little overrated by everyone - for some reason not even they know. He has flashes of brilliance, but he's not the best emcee out there today, not by a long shot..
Each song is a different work, a different art piece meant to be judged individually. Obviously albums are pieces put together as a set, which can be judged on the whole, and then the collective works of an artist too can be judged.
There are a lot of El-P songs I don't like, and a few I do, but this song... is one of my favorite songs by any person of all time. It blows my mind. It's like he wrote these words for my life. The beat matches the paranoia, its like being alone in space...
el-p has a absolutely amazing insight to observe his lyrical content is mindblowing....el-p is not a rapper, hes a professor to the science of hip hop, shedding light on the dark shades of life.....TRUE SCIENCE.......if this was biblical times he would be classed as a profit or devil,
I think that when it comes to rapping, El puts a lot of his eggs into one basket. He has a message he wants to get out, and doesn't really worry much about lyricism to do it, so I see him as more of a poet than a lyricist.
His flow during his co-flow days was amazing, now it's just average. But he still has out-of-this-world beats which is why he's my favorite hip-hop artist right now xD
el has said in interviews that he knows theres alotta people that cant stand the sound of his voice and thats why he puts out instr versions of his records.
I personally think his flow is savage. His style is very much his own. He doesnt have the greatest voice in the world but w/e. We cant all be biggie.
For me its not the voice. Then again I appreciate the voices of everyone from Eyedea to Billy Corgan. I think his flow is fine too. His production is obviously off the charts good and that's where he really shines. I would rate El-P as a slightly above average MC with incredible production.
While I respect your opinion, I disagree. Indeed, he does have some great quotables, but his songs are very rarely mindblowing from a lyrical standpoint. Alot of it is a matter of preference, so I'll agree to disagree.
Rarely mind-blowing? Have you listened to Poisenville Kids or TPC or How to Serve Man, Truancy, Tuned Mass Damper? If you have I dunno how you can propound such sacrilege. Granted his flow isn't as smooth as someone as Lupe's, and I've not had the good fortune to witness any El-P freestyle verse regardless he is likely one of the best MCs out there today based on all-around talent, easily one of the most underrated
I can't have an opinion? I guess saying he's only slightly above average is too harsh. I simply don't think he's as incredible of an all around MC as alot of heads give him credit for.
@TairyHesticles I take it you haven't heard his latest song, 'How To Serve Man.' It's metaphorical genius that most rappers could never even dream of constructing.
I think you should give El a bit more credit. I mean, look at RZA. Incredible producer, but sometimes he'll make you wish Ghost or Rae were rapping when he is. Meanwhile, I can't think of any El-P track where I imagine someone else would do better on it.
@TairyHesticles I have to agree his flow on this album is no where no near on point as it was with Company Flow. Still shouldn't detract that this is in my Top 10 all time albums though should it :)
@TairyHesticles I get what you're saying man, but I wouldn't say slightly above average - when you think about the average MC uknow? I think he just wouldn't be a... top tier lyricist? Maybe that was a bad way to put it.
@TairyHesticles while i'm a big el-p fan, i still don't understand why ppl are trying to berate you over your opinion. they should be happy you uploaded it in the first place.
@TairyHesticles what aspect of an MC are you referring to when you say hes slightly above average on the mic? His lyrics have very deep meaning and have a lot of depth if you take the time to decipher them. What about his talent on the mic do you find to be only slightly above average? His lyrics, his flow? His delivery? You have to be more specific.
@TairyHesticles hey my man think you could upload delorian and were famous? i cant find decent versions on youtube and my broke ass hasnt made it to the record store to cop the albums yet
@TairyHesticles I think he might actually be underrated in terms of his lyrics, I have quickly become obsessed with El-P's music and I think his flow is off the charts. Literally, reading his lyrics while listening to his songs are eye-opening....It's very tough to memorize his shit and get it down pat.
I would rate him as very above average. The only area hes lacking in is voice imo. But regardless he's one of the most important musicians out there. His work is incredibly brilliant.
and yall need to actually read the fucking lyrics on ISWYD b4 shitalk
i quote..: you are not uniquely pained and if you go we wont be sorry and who the hell are you to put me through the banality of watchin this// there are many better that have gone for clearly better reasons and i starkly must remind you that you have not even been trying// and thats the only remarkble about you/ stop me if im lying
never dealt with addiction in yourself or a friend?
man yall must be half deaf or out of rhythm or some shit. i dunno how ppl can keep saying el doesnt have a sick flo. i mean personally i find him to be arguabley -the best- and no i dont expect everyone to share that perception but to say his flow is 'subpar', 'wack', or merely average W.E you gotta be nuts- 3/4 of the underground scene arent even comparable.
as for the abundance of youtube remarks about him being a shitty-mediocre lyricist... yall need to expand your vocabularies.
His flow is just a little monotone. It works for him, and he is an incredible all around artist, but I don't think El-P when I think about guys with great flows.
He doesn't really have the charisma to glide around the beat in different patterns. He can extend brief sentences to make the structure more abstract, but his tempo is always pretty constant.
Wow thumbs up for somebody spouting a load of pap, go take some mushies or acid then come back and give thumbs up to someone who doesn't take drugs....you won't be giving thumbs up....iLL tunE btW
cool dude....So you are saying the beats and rhymes arent sick? Go to hell if you are because this is the shit that beastie boys were creaming about when they made "Hello Nasty"
around the interlude i dunno why but like i visualize a room thats hidden that i find and there are like these pianos and soundwaves floating with a strange player with no face but i can tell when he looks at me cause its like ive trespassed and he keeps playing then out of the side of the piano theres a tear with an insane ringing and El-P's vocals comes out of this portal thing in the piano. Wow imagine if I actually smoked weed. :I
weed doesn't help your imagination. im not saying its bad for it though, i think it could be bad if you THINK it helps it and you use it to substitute your actual imagination. but keep your mind pure man..
I haven't honestly noticed any of the rap and hip-hop on the radio talking about making love. All I hear is stuff about sex. I'm sure there's other stuff out there about making love, I'm just saying it's not very often that you get it hear it so well spoken.
haha I remember years back when i was starting to rhyme i was at best buy looking for instrumental cds and i saw fantastic damage and i got hooked on the beats, then i started to listening to el ps rapping, and became a fan
whatever you think home boi your not only wrong but fucked inside the section of dead testaments!!
this is hiphop now-a days but i know old school which has always been the mother mary-GOOD ,but the hiphop they believe is fake not real! thats why we supprot el and aes, del and def jux...>>>, thats not mainstream!! which do you favor in return man? this is actually pretty good considering the least! even more since its el-p even tho aes is better !!
to TairyHesticles, alright maybe not the greatest of all time, i'd probably give that to someone like J Dilla outta respect alone, although he really is god like. I think he's the most real. El-p's just different, experimental and i love it.
I can see where you're coming from, about him not being as good an MC as he's said to be, but he really is dope. Company flow has some of his best, but some songs off i'll sleep when you're dead were sick. Overly dramatic truth has dope as fuck lyrics man.
There are actually quite a few producers up to par with El-P (Madlib being one of them). Like I said before, its not taking anything at all away from the genius of El-P, but he isn't the greatest of all time or anything.
Actually i totally agree. I don't think anyone comes close to either of the two. They're both totally different styles of work, but both genius in what they do. I just managed to get madvillainy 2, and although the raps are the same, hearing what madlib did on a 14 hour airplane trip to tokyo, is just fucking shockingly good.
I'm a huge fan of madlib, don't think there's anything i haven't got by him, i teared his beat "understanding" up myself.
El-p is ridiculously good. I'm not liking the way TairyHesticles says he's overrated. You must have no idea for how talented he is.
Not only has he created some over the top amazing shit, produced 2 brilliant albums, he's also responsible for the cold vein, considered possibly one of the best hiphop albums of all time, he did a god damn jazz album on the piano called "high water".
Now try and show me a rapper who can do jazz albums, and shit like this which is unlike anything i've ever heard.
I get his talent, and no doubt, he's one of the best out there. He could be the best double threat of producer/lyricist today. With that said, hip hop heads have somehow found a way to overrate someone as talented as El-P.
The Cold Vein is a classic. Nearly flawless. Easily in the top 30 hip hop CD's of all time. Fantastic Damage is boarderline classic but I would never refer to ISWYD as a classic.
I can't tell you how many people I've run into who hail El-P as the greatest hip hop artist of this era. There are a huge amount of "fans" who were just turned onto El-P recently, and hail him as the end all of modern hip hop. This is why he is overrated.
Don't get me wrong, I love El-P, but he's not Jesus with a microphone like many will have you believe.
Quit overreacting. People have a tendancy to act like El-P is the god of hip hop. He's a brilliant artist and one of my favorites, but underground heads overrate him for some reason. Trust me, I hear it all the time.
Really? You're missing alot of classic shit then. Don't get me wrong, Def Jux (along with Stones Throw) is the best hip hop label out there today.
You should really check some other shit out though. MF DOOM is the king of underground hip hop, Immortal Technique is the most lyrically insane artist since Canibus, Eyedea's CD's are an absolute trip, Kool Keith is just brilliantly bizzare...ect...
Doom king of UGHH. Probably true. He pisses me off for not turning up for his shows and putting lip syncing imposters up..
But!
Like i said, Madvillainy 2 was dope. Infact i only know madlib through doom. *cough has dooms ENTIRE discography* No joke, i realised one day doom had endless replay vaule, and that special herbs was the shit.
agreed about technique, but i'll take atmosphere (MY personal favourite in the underground) over the rest.
Yea, I'm not sure what's going on with DOOM and his shows. I'm hoping that there really is some method behind it all. If he drops another instant classic, I'll gladly forget about the shows he ditched.
On a side note, Cage's Too Heavy For Cherubs is one of my favorite hip hop songs.
yeah dude, i have mad respect for all those cats. doom has a holy grail for a mouth, canibus can eat an ass, eyedea is always flowin dope, and tech is a political nightmare. i just try to limit myself, i know i'm missing out.
i just like jux too much to branch out. i know it sounds selfish, but i try to limit myself. respect to stones throw and rhymesayers though, i used to be heavily into them. that's word.
really? i think he's dramatically increased as an mc and a producer: to me, fantastic damage is one of the decades top 50 or so albums: but iswyd is the very definition of perfection. el is a master firing on all cylinders. the traces of inexperience found on fdic are gone w/ this one.
also, to the best mc - underground or no - argument below, how come sage francis isnt getting love????
I agree that El as a producer is way ahead. As a rapper? I like him, but I can certainly understand why some people wouldn't. He has no great talent as a lyricist, it's just I happen to like his attitude and what he's saying. As for Sage Francis, he's ok, but nothing better imo. Having said that, I'm into rappers like Rakim and Big Daddy and am totally not stuck to the underground. Vast on Cold Vein is unstoppable. Speaking of lyrics, Jehst (from the UK) is top 5.
Minus the Jehst comment, I totally agree with your comments. El-P is nothing to brag about as far as lyricism goes. Does he have some great lyrics? Absolutely. That still doesn't make him an all time great lyricist though.
El-P (especially on this album) is an insane producer, but if you put his lyrics down onto a lyric sheet, they aren't that impressive. Not to mention his flow is sub par.
And word on that Rakim and Big Daddy Kane shit. Classics to say the least.
I wouldn't say he's the best rapper out there right now, but Def Jux is definitly the best label out right now. There's not a wack artist on the label.
Oh, that's a given. I have Def Jux's website on my favorites list:) Too bad about Cannibal Ox breaking up though:( And, what I was trying to say about El-P as a rapper was that he's the best rapper out there who ALSO produces. He's the best double-threat out there.
But As far as overall talent, I'd have to give it to El-P. Doom just appeals more to me. All of his CD's seem to be totally complete with no bad tracks. All the songs flow together to create a perfect blend from start to finish. Every El-P CD has had some tracks that I skip over.
It's just too close to call for me. Personally I'd give it to Doom, but the case is definitly there for El-P.
Man, that first beat is incredible.

EL-P CHANGES MY LIFE
SX3Music 2 years ago 12
el-p has a absolutely amazing insight to observe his lyrical content is mindblowing....el-p is not a rapper, hes a professor to the science of hip hop, shedding light on the dark shades of life.....TRUE SCIENCE.......if this was biblical times he would be classed as a profit or devil,
DjHaNdSkiLLz 2 years ago 3
I think that when it comes to rapping, El puts a lot of his eggs into one basket. He has a message he wants to get out, and doesn't really worry much about lyricism to do it, so I see him as more of a poet than a lyricist.
His flow during his co-flow days was amazing, now it's just average. But he still has out-of-this-world beats which is why he's my favorite hip-hop artist right now xD
shinjitsu83 2 years ago
el has said in interviews that he knows theres alotta people that cant stand the sound of his voice and thats why he puts out instr versions of his records.
I personally think his flow is savage. His style is very much his own. He doesnt have the greatest voice in the world but w/e. We cant all be biggie.
dixonyass 2 years ago 12
For me its not the voice. Then again I appreciate the voices of everyone from Eyedea to Billy Corgan. I think his flow is fine too. His production is obviously off the charts good and that's where he really shines. I would rate El-P as a slightly above average MC with incredible production.

I'm sorry, but anyone who has even listened to half of the lyrics that this cat's pit knows just how lethal he is on the mic.
Indeed,'Funcrusher Plus' is one of the most quotable hip hop albums of all time.
'slightly above average MC?'
Not to anybody with ears.
thirdshift47 2 years ago 24
While I respect your opinion, I disagree. Indeed, he does have some great quotables, but his songs are very rarely mindblowing from a lyrical standpoint. Alot of it is a matter of preference, so I'll agree to disagree.
TairyHesticles 2 years ago
Indeed.
thirdshift47 2 years ago
@TairyHesticles
Rarely mind-blowing? Have you listened to Poisenville Kids or TPC or How to Serve Man, Truancy, Tuned Mass Damper? If you have I dunno how you can propound such sacrilege. Granted his flow isn't as smooth as someone as Lupe's, and I've not had the good fortune to witness any El-P freestyle verse regardless he is likely one of the best MCs out there today based on all-around talent, easily one of the most underrated

zuh? How about "incredibly talented songwriter"? It's almost like you haven't listened to the song you uploaded...
bassbole 2 years ago 3
I can't have an opinion? I guess saying he's only slightly above average is too harsh. I simply don't think he's as incredible of an all around MC as alot of heads give him credit for.
TairyHesticles 2 years ago 4
@TairyHesticles I take it you haven't heard his latest song, 'How To Serve Man.' It's metaphorical genius that most rappers could never even dream of constructing.
xNikaXteeNx 1 year ago
I think you should give El a bit more credit. I mean, look at RZA. Incredible producer, but sometimes he'll make you wish Ghost or Rae were rapping when he is. Meanwhile, I can't think of any El-P track where I imagine someone else would do better on it.

@TairyHesticles I get what you're saying man, but I wouldn't say slightly above average - when you think about the average MC uknow? I think he just wouldn't be a... top tier lyricist? Maybe that was a bad way to put it.
devineproudmanus123 1 year ago
@TairyHesticles your right, he has a pretty generic voice. his flow and lyrics are way above average though

shagadelic215 9 months ago
@TairyHesticles what aspect of an MC are you referring to when you say hes slightly above average on the mic? His lyrics have very deep meaning and have a lot of depth if you take the time to decipher them. What about his talent on the mic do you find to be only slightly above average? His lyrics, his flow? His delivery? You have to be more specific.

@TairyHesticles I think he might actually be underrated in terms of his lyrics, I have quickly become obsessed with El-P's music and I think his flow is off the charts. Literally, reading his lyrics while listening to his songs are eye-opening....It's very tough to memorize his shit and get it down pat.

man yall must be half deaf or out of rhythm or some shit. i dunno how ppl can keep saying el doesnt have a sick flo. i mean personally i find him to be arguabley -the best- and no i dont expect everyone to share that perception but to say his flow is 'subpar', 'wack', or merely average W.E you gotta be nuts- 3/4 of the underground scene arent even comparable.
as for the abundance of youtube remarks about him being a shitty-mediocre lyricist... yall need to expand your vocabularies.
pa1nted 2 years ago 3
His flow is just a little monotone. It works for him, and he is an incredible all around artist, but I don't think El-P when I think about guys with great flows.
He doesn't really have the charisma to glide around the beat in different patterns. He can extend brief sentences to make the structure more abstract, but his tempo is always pretty constant.

to TairyHesticles, alright maybe not the greatest of all time, i'd probably give that to someone like J Dilla outta respect alone, although he really is god like. I think he's the most real. El-p's just different, experimental and i love it.
I can see where you're coming from, about him not being as good an MC as he's said to be, but he really is dope. Company flow has some of his best, but some songs off i'll sleep when you're dead were sick. Overly dramatic truth has dope as fuck lyrics man.

one word: Madlib
But both artists are phenomenal, that's where i stand
filly255 3 years ago
There are actually quite a few producers up to par with El-P (Madlib being one of them). Like I said before, its not taking anything at all away from the genius of El-P, but he isn't the greatest of all time or anything.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
Actually i totally agree. I don't think anyone comes close to either of the two. They're both totally different styles of work, but both genius in what they do. I just managed to get madvillainy 2, and although the raps are the same, hearing what madlib did on a 14 hour airplane trip to tokyo, is just fucking shockingly good.
I'm a huge fan of madlib, don't think there's anything i haven't got by him, i teared his beat "understanding" up myself.
Another great that comes to mind...: 9th Wonder.
Cuttz08 3 years ago

El-p is ridiculously good. I'm not liking the way TairyHesticles says he's overrated. You must have no idea for how talented he is.
Not only has he created some over the top amazing shit, produced 2 brilliant albums, he's also responsible for the cold vein, considered possibly one of the best hiphop albums of all time, he did a god damn jazz album on the piano called "high water".
Now try and show me a rapper who can do jazz albums, and shit like this which is unlike anything i've ever heard.
Cuttz08 3 years ago
I get his talent, and no doubt, he's one of the best out there. He could be the best double threat of producer/lyricist today. With that said, hip hop heads have somehow found a way to overrate someone as talented as El-P.
The Cold Vein is a classic. Nearly flawless. Easily in the top 30 hip hop CD's of all time. Fantastic Damage is boarderline classic but I would never refer to ISWYD as a classic.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
I can't tell you how many people I've run into who hail El-P as the greatest hip hop artist of this era. There are a huge amount of "fans" who were just turned onto El-P recently, and hail him as the end all of modern hip hop. This is why he is overrated.
Don't get me wrong, I love El-P, but he's not Jesus with a microphone like many will have you believe.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
el-p is brilliant
but as an mc i prefer vast aire and aesop rock
but for beats,i love el-p's style
chiefchips 3 years ago
You know, I've never been the biggest fan of El-P's beats. They are dope, no doubt, but the beats are kind of overrated.
And Aesop is definitly a better MC.
I'm not saying El-P isn't great, I have all his CD's, but alot of underground heads refer to him as being more talented than he actually is.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
quit calling him overrated, you have no justification. at the end of the day, you posted this song on youtube.
verballycomplex 3 years ago
Quit overreacting. People have a tendancy to act like El-P is the god of hip hop. He's a brilliant artist and one of my favorites, but underground heads overrate him for some reason. Trust me, I hear it all the time.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
haha. man im fucking bias. i apologize. i only listen to strictly def jux. no lie
verballycomplex 3 years ago
There's alot more out there than just Def Jux.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
Doom king of UGHH. Probably true. He pisses me off for not turning up for his shows and putting lip syncing imposters up..
But!
Like i said, Madvillainy 2 was dope. Infact i only know madlib through doom. *cough has dooms ENTIRE discography* No joke, i realised one day doom had endless replay vaule, and that special herbs was the shit.
agreed about technique, but i'll take atmosphere (MY personal favourite in the underground) over the rest.
Speaking of rhymesayers: P.O.S
Def Jux: Cage.
Try em
Cuttz08 3 years ago
Yea, I'm not sure what's going on with DOOM and his shows. I'm hoping that there really is some method behind it all. If he drops another instant classic, I'll gladly forget about the shows he ditched.
On a side note, Cage's Too Heavy For Cherubs is one of my favorite hip hop songs.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
yeah dude, i have mad respect for all those cats. doom has a holy grail for a mouth, canibus can eat an ass, eyedea is always flowin dope, and tech is a political nightmare. i just try to limit myself, i know i'm missing out.
i just like jux too much to branch out. i know it sounds selfish, but i try to limit myself. respect to stones throw and rhymesayers though, i used to be heavily into them. that's word.

doom is tight but hes not all that tight... sometimes his rhymes get old
chrykel909 3 years ago
i agree with you... el today isnt even as good as el from company flow, but for some reason heads keep thinking el's the best artist out there
chrykel909 3 years ago
really? i think he's dramatically increased as an mc and a producer: to me, fantastic damage is one of the decades top 50 or so albums: but iswyd is the very definition of perfection. el is a master firing on all cylinders. the traces of inexperience found on fdic are gone w/ this one.
also, to the best mc - underground or no - argument below, how come sage francis isnt getting love????
khoop2k6 3 years ago
I agree that El as a producer is way ahead. As a rapper? I like him, but I can certainly understand why some people wouldn't. He has no great talent as a lyricist, it's just I happen to like his attitude and what he's saying. As for Sage Francis, he's ok, but nothing better imo. Having said that, I'm into rappers like Rakim and Big Daddy and am totally not stuck to the underground. Vast on Cold Vein is unstoppable. Speaking of lyrics, Jehst (from the UK) is top 5.
BMan12121212 3 years ago 2
Minus the Jehst comment, I totally agree with your comments. El-P is nothing to brag about as far as lyricism goes. Does he have some great lyrics? Absolutely. That still doesn't make him an all time great lyricist though.
El-P (especially on this album) is an insane producer, but if you put his lyrics down onto a lyric sheet, they aren't that impressive. Not to mention his flow is sub par.
And word on that Rakim and Big Daddy Kane shit. Classics to say the least.

5burowz 3 years ago
I wouldn't say he's the best rapper out there right now, but Def Jux is definitly the best label out right now. There's not a wack artist on the label.
TairyHesticles 3 years ago
Oh, that's a given. I have Def Jux's website on my favorites list:) Too bad about Cannibal Ox breaking up though:( And, what I was trying to say about El-P as a rapper was that he's the best rapper out there who ALSO produces. He's the best double-threat out there.
5burowz 3 years ago
But As far as overall talent, I'd have to give it to El-P. Doom just appeals more to me. All of his CD's seem to be totally complete with no bad tracks. All the songs flow together to create a perfect blend from start to finish. Every El-P CD has had some tracks that I skip over.
It's just too close to call for me. Personally I'd give it to Doom, but the case is definitly there for El-P.
