My first thought is composers set the text to their music and most put a great deal of thought to lining up vowels on high notes, word stress, meaning, etc.
My second thought is prior to the invention of supertitles or 'back of chair titles' what ever gets this glorious music to the masses is what's important -especially in less cosmopolitan areas. Just a quick response.
I agree with what operadude32 said about the vowels and such; when composers are good, they take all of that into account. However I think it's important to remember that when operas were first written they were written in the language of the country where they were to be performed. I think the most important thing about translations is the intention of the words. The translator has to intimately know the piece in the original language first to be able to honor the composer's original intent.
Haha,I didn't understand what the description was saying about the parrot... That was an, um, interesting choice. :D None of Gruberova's recordings ever impressed me much - maybe it was just the audio, but she always seemed out of tune. This performance was outstanding - she has a beautiful voice, but what is most impressive to me is the way she commits to her character - so many singers have the voice, but they so often treat the CHARACTER of the piece as secondary. Brava, Edita!
Gruberova- there is nothing more to say about he music. But thank God the times are over when opera productions looked like taken from scenes of "The Beauty and the Beast"...
About the production - it is my understanding that this was a tour from the Vienna Staatsoper - probably performed in a small town that did not have its opera house. A real truck & load.
Why she is singing in German? Anyway she is a goddess!

tedesco a parte, la Gruberova è straordinaria! ha un timbro meraviglioso... sembra un usignolo e un fraseggio ineguagliabile!

she's still a doll, today, in every way.

This is terribly cheerful for Donizetti. Gruberova before her prime is still stunning to watch.

God, regardless of one's opinion of Gruberova, you have to admit, the Norina is a LOT better than that of Freni!!

Early Gruberova is special. Well later Gruberova too! German is flexible enough to accommodate most operatic singing. I wish English was.

This is simply amazing! Her face and her voice are gorgeous, and I've always had a weakness for translations of arias.
