BEAUTIFUL! I play the Viola (modern ;) ) And have played for years, however I still adore the d'Amore even more!!! Beautiful, however, it must be a pain to tune ;).
@kkallebb Because Baroque went out of style. Well actually the "Viol" family in its own (I'm not certain if a Viola De Gamba is an actual member of the "Viols") went out of style because modern instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, etc) took over. The modern Instruments took over because Viol's where somewhat quiet, whereas Violins were powerful.
I think that the both of you will find that LEarning ANY instrument is difficult. It is a way of like. If Death Angel wishes to learn it i encourage it. Being a proffesional Violinist, and studying baroque music, i know that the concept of the amature is VERY important in this style. Music of the time was not performed by professionals...well it was, but rarly. they were emplyed more for private sessions. And also as a correction, Baroque instruments are no harder than modern..for the record

Wow, it almost sounds like a harp, violin and viola togeher. I am now inspired to play one. I don't really care if it's hard and what not. Isn't playing an instrument for passion ? not for counting like on how an expert you are playing it. for me, no matter how an expert you are at playing a viola d'amore for example, if you cannot enjoy playing it even for once, then it is just pointless. Sorry if it's out of topic or anything o.O

Do you happen to know if you need to take separate lessons to play the viola d'amore, or could I just learn to play it at home (I am an intermediate level violinist).
You should definitely take separate lessons if at all possible. It can be quite a hard instrument to get a hold of, with how large it is and with the couple of extra strings (it ends up messing with your depth perception slightly, but you get used to it quickly). Many of the pieces written for it are also in scoredatura, which can make it a little tricky as well with constantly having to change tunings.
When I said "hold of" I mean more along the lines of "handle on."
I know the Viola D'amore is a hard instrument to play--I've played them before, and I've taken a lesson with Thomas Georgi for this instrument. And realistically, ANY instrument is a hard instrument to learn how to play, let alone play well. I am not, however, one to discourage people from learning how to play an instrument, especially when it comes to this one. The D'Amore needs all the interest it can get.
I think you're underestimating a lot of people. Everyone understands that it's hard to learn an instrument, no matter what instrument it is. And if they don't know that, they figure it out when they try to play it. Don't discourage people from wanting to learn how to play Viola D'amore just because you don't think they can handle it. You (and I) know nothing about the people on here, let alone their musical abilities.
I don't discourage them! I'm only saying them that playing on the Viola D'amore it's not as easy as they think and nothing else. I don't said them not to play.
I am very aware of the fact that an instrument isn't easy to master, especially lesser known baroque instruments like the viola d'amore for which there is little theory available. And I don't think instruments like the violin orthe viola d'amore are toys, which I think is a rather insulting statement.
But most people are capable of mastering an instrument if they possess enough will to master it.
I don't said Viola D'amor it's a toy! I only said that many people don't realize that Baroque Instruments aren't as easy to play as they think they are. The Toys were analogy to their understanding of playing the instrument
I know you don't mean to imply that it is a toy, but you do imply I think it's a toy, which isn't a very flattering remark considering I already have a decent knowledge of the violin and of the history of other instruments from its family.
