@Charlieepps Building was on the northern, outer edge of the tornado. If you travel the length of the path (east west) you can see how its power "pulsed" ie: extreme damage, damage, extreme damage, damage. it was at FULL power when it ran across this school. youd have to ask someone in the tornado science but your probably looking at maximum wind speed of the vortex here.
Our hearts are with y'all in Joplin. I know I'll never forget the footage and stuff. I almost wanna cry when I see the youtube video of a fella pulling out a dog (it made it out alive shockingly, the dog :) ) and the guy is consoling the puppy. Poor lil dude. (the dog I meant) I feel sad for that entire community. If only I weren't so broke I'd send something to them to kinda aid them in the recovery efforts.
Unbelieveable footage! In all my 65 years on earth, I've never, ever seen such a violent, frightening storm. My sincere symphathy to all those affected. I'll say this - you guys in Missouri are a tough breed (I served overseas with a few), and I know you'll come out of this standing tall. As a West coast native, about the worst weather I've seen is a hard rain - fact is, the weather out here is pretty boring. Hell, I should probably count my blessings.
@Claytonsoccer Coming from a Joplin resident and former student at this school. Nothing will protect from this violent of a tornado. The only way to get away from this is to be underground. I believe that a weaker tornado (f-1 or f-2) hall ways are the best option for a high volume high school such as Joplin.
I would like to say i like or love this video but damn how can i say that when so many lost their lives to this thing? i will say great footage of a greater tragedy .
@superchaser3 the power did go out at the start of the video... Well...sorta, I think hallway power went out. The tornado tore the transformer box to pieces. But anyway, the cameras and the emergency lights run on battery power.
That building didn't look that old.. Can't be more than 10 to 15 years old. It's unfortunate this tornado even happened but it's fortunate that this happened on a Sunday evening with no people in it and not at 2:30/3:00 on a Monday.
@beatleman69 I never got the point of having to go into the hallways to take "cover" for a tornado. You'd think, just like an over pass, that the hall way would act as a wind tunnel but anyway I still think that every school should have a storm shelter of some kind and not just one, but at least a couple for larger schools.
I feel for all of you from Joplin! To have to experience this is so scary and to survive the tornado is blessing! Thank God, that you are still here today. There are many that arent... I would just like to take a moment for those that lost their lives on this day. May God and his Angels keep you well! Much love from Amber to all of Joplin!
i hate how people take this stuff as a joke or try and be funny about it. This was the worst day of our lives here in Joplin. It's almost been a year now and it is still sad to think about it. So when we hear jokes about it, it just brings back all the pain
@ShianneSmith13 They are sick trolls who prowl the internet looking to make comments to make people angry. If they were ever in a tornado...especially one as big as the one that flattened Joplin they'd pee their pants.
the tornado sires were also "blown out so they wouldnt have done any god if they were blaring. it happened so fast there is no way anyone could have alerted anything to others to help them. remember that.
no the windows werent blown out... the WALLS that the windows were in were blown out. please understand how destructive this was before you ask stupid questions.
It's sad to see the town go..my baby cousin died in the tornado, but if the graduation for the class of '11 was here at the high school my cousin as well as her mom would be dead to.
i live in texas and i vist joplin almost every month, im going today..and i cant wait to see the progress of rebuilding the town! its amazing how much people care to help eachother!
OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!! That was so amazing!!! The funny thing is your footage @ the lunchroom. The exit sign got knocked out! By the way, I agree with TheMightykaz. It DOES look like some wave in the lunchroom clip! Wow!!! Now THAT is EXTRA GOOD footage!
@fruitloop33344455555 The tornado hit right as school was over for the year, in fact, it hit on graduation night. There was a vacant store in the Mall (I believe it was once a Ventures store, and then later, a ShopKo?) , and over the summer, this store was renovated, and reopened-on schedule-as the new High School.
@Allertoilet999 But, if YOU like fire alarms, I'll tell you the ones at my school. Horns: SpetrAlert Horn/Strobe on Code 3 by Panel, Firelite Panel thing in the front lobby, and BG12's for pull stations.
It's so hard to watch this and remember how easily my school dissapeared. I may have only lived there for two years but it was my home...now because of this horrible tornado, I've had to leave all of my good friends behind. It will never be the same.
:( my dog die becuz of this !we went to the store and as we were coming bak on da radio sad there was a tornado warning and my dog was out in da back yard.as we got home it started getion insanley windy and it was raining hard! i open the door ,i was very worried .my dog wouldnt come it was jsut barking at gate .i wanted 2 go out there and get him but my parehts wouldnt let me.so we went in da basement and i was crying.we turned on da radio hearing that da tornado touched the ground imy max :.(
You can never really understand what this is like fully until you live it through yourself... I am an avid storm chaser and I live in Joplin Missouri. My house was about a quarter mile from the tornado but luckily I wasn't there and I was roughly 5 miles from the tornado. Even then I felt utter fear and panic... I can only imagine what those who were near by felt.. Imagine if this was on a monday at 2pm..... well over a thousand would've died....
Wow.. I installed some of these cameras about a half a year or so before this tragic event went down.. This hits so close to home and I'm not even from Joplin.. From KC, but my prayers go out to all affected..
I Live in Massachusetts, and I feel so bad 4 the people who were affected by this tornado. After my Grandmother's home got destroyed by the June, 1st Springfield tornado, and all that destruction, here, I can't even imagine the destruction, and how people felt there.
@Jmo6480456 know how you feel man, i was in the Enterprise Alabama Tornado in March on 07, i wasnt at the High School where 8 students were killed but i saw the tornado just as it hit the school.. Its hard, seeing the HS like that, a community that youve lived in all your life, a house that you spent 5 years in.. all gone. That was 4 years ago and it still tears me up whenever i see videos or the Weather Channel documentary on it.
@Jmo6480456 sorry for that :( ..i remember this in the news so sad and .. creepy ! btw the video is really scary .my god EF5 I cant imagine THAT . ok, the best to JOPLIN here from argentina and the alarm system worked ??? what are you doing at that moment..i mean is a EF5 and thats is huge ..hope you are ok now and joplin
Crazy video. I'm afraid of an ef5 tornado hitting the metroplex here in North Texas... It would be a mass casualty disaster. I can't believe anyone survived that tornado as Joplin looks like it got hit by a nuke...
@ladontloveu thanks. we are all okay. I lost my home and live in a trailer now, but the school has been split. The 9th and 10th graders go to the middle school, and the 11th and 12th grader (11th grade is my grade) go to Shopko which is in the mall. They built Shopko really fast but it looks good. all the high schoolers got Mac laptops for free but it's not ours to keep. i watch videos like these every 22nd of every month in memory of what we have lost. THANK YOU :)
@stormwhittington23 WOW! I am always impressed with how quickly America bounces back and provides for each other. Im sure you still have a long way to go but the healing is underway. God Bless you all and I hope you all stay safe in the future.
@ladontloveu thank you so much for caring. we couldn't have done it without everybody else helping out and giving us the strength to not leave but fight for our town.
@stormwhittington23 Aww, of course I care. I cried watching all the videos, still do. An EF2 ripped through our town and it was scary enough...I can't possibly imagine the magnitude of what you guys have been through.
