never read the book, more historical fantasy reading than science fiction, but I think I would enjoy this space folding scene put into words. 'I am floating into space time, orifices open and space dust is born from a thought, planets are aligned, more orifices are needed and link to the planets is conceived with a calculated distance from thought, we have arrived.'

In fact... it is obvious that when Hebert wrote his novel in the 1950's or so.... the freemen are extensively moddelled after Arab/Islamic nomadic culture.. I guess back in those days this was pretty exotic to western readers... and western people knew so little about Arab/islamic culture that they probably bought the fremen as completely outworldish....  while in fact it is very similar to some cultures we have on earth

@myamotomusashi66 This refers to the Bulterian Jihad that happened 10000 years before Dune. Earth was annihilated in a nuclear war of humans against Artificial Intelligence. Since then, a new commandment exists, "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" and the houses as well as the Spacing Guild and the Bene Gesserit came into existence.

@l0rf Actually she is referring to the prophesy that a leader will arrive on Dune to free the Fremen with holy war. Paul and his mother exploit that prophesy and Paul becomes the Messiah and leader of the new Jihad.
