what`s cool about this song, is its meaning is exactly what you are showing in the pictures (as you probably know). Ìt`s just a simple song about him looking out over nature and the city at night, and thinking how it won`t always be like this. It`s transient etc. I`m glad it`s not about girls or about trying to catch a plane to meet his baby, etc.

i think it works. the contrast catches you off guard and takes you out your comfort zone. after 3:30 when it settles back down again it's quite a profound feeling to figure what you've just experienced. there's plenty other david gray songs which are wholly calm and hey, i'm not complaining, i'm used to that abrasive angsty music from listening to metal when i was younger.
