  • I love your work.

please check out the trailer for the novel WIth These Eyes.

A global computer network serves as the tool by an agressor to track a journalist who is about to uncover the secret of Quantum Energy.

please give me a "Thumbs up" and subscribe if you like what you see.

    peace and love

  • Terrible quality :(

  • I am very happy to see the vidoe after you give this Hal Abelson gives an introduction to the "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" lecture with an explanation of Declarative and Imperative programming.

  • I Really Like The Video From Your Hal Abelson gives an introduction to the "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" lecture with an explanation of Declarative and Imperative programming.

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing Hal Abelson gives an introduction to the "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" lecture with an explanation of Declarative and Imperative programming.

  • after i watched this video, my insight is very open because the video is very good to give information Hal Abelson gives an introduction to the "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" lecture with an explanation of Declarative and Imperative programming.

  • This guy does not make any sense at all

  • it´s a science hal...............

  • >Casting spells with lisp 101

I wish this was my CS professor.

  • WTF?!?!?! I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT COMPUTER SCIENCE INVOLVES! NOT THE HISTORY OF EGYPT!! (facepalm) lol

  • @ReunitePeace777

    Get out.

  • @Ilikemustard lol

  • "it's easy to confuse the essence of what you're doing with the tools you are using" ... "computer science isnt real.. very little difference between what I can build and what I can imagine" -- Abelson

Most influential book I ever read.

  • I think i fell asleep within the first 15 minutes... BORING!!

  • @GoodFellax21 Its 10 minutes long...

  • @xThexMaXx i meant 15 seconds, lol.

  • Comment removed

  • @GoodFellax21

And that, my friend, is why your ADHD riddled self will never accomplish anything noteworthy.

  • @Ilikemustard And this, my friend, is why your judgemental ass will never get laid nor accomplish anything noteworthy.

  • @GoodFellax21

Uh, no. You see, I don't have the attention span of a goldfish.

  • @Ilikemustard You want me to give you a cookie or something? Your comment was so beyond pointless that i was scratching the shit out of my balls the entire time while typing with one hand.

  • Thanks for that.

  • lol @ 6:36 "Shit what did I get myself into"

  • FUCK THE SOUND OF CHALK IS REALLY ANNOYING AND TOURTURING !!!

  • basicly what i got from this is living isnt life then what is it?

  • The heart of this video: "There's not all that much difference in what I can build, and what I can imagine"... That hit home for me. I'm about to be a Computer Science Major!

  • Wow, this dude's hair man.

  • Thumbs up if your from Diefenbaker :)

  • This is some boring shit right here.

  • MCA is equivalent to ME (Computer Science and Engineering)

MCA with B.Sc. (Computer Science) background is equivalent to ME (Computer Science and Engineering).

    B.Sc. Computer Science (3 Yrs) + MCA (3 Yrs) = 6 Years.

    BE Computer Science (4 Yrs) + ME (2Yrs) = 6 Years.

MCA and ME both are equal.

Companies giving equal priority to both MCA and ME.

Master of Computer Applications MCA and Master of Engineering ME, are treated Same for jobs and there is no difference in the competence ratings.

  • I only reason i came here is because i have computer science next year in my school. I'm a Freshman who's going to be a somphore and i'm taking computer science. I don't really like math, so if computer science have to do with math i'm not taking it. Can anyone really tell me what computer science really is, and what are you learning from it for the future.

  • @jjmike1jj Theres alot of Mathematics in CS. you can't escape it not even in CE or EE

  • @rpowell1986 Damn!!! You seriously alot of Mathematics. Let me guess there not like the small math we do right? There the crazy x,y and crazy numbers? When you took it, Do u like it and was it fun. I just like the name computer science. I heard it have to do with something like programming games, and some other stuffs.

  • @jjmike1jj No complex Math like differential equations, Linear Algebra.. I know an Engineer who told me that Computer Science is up to par with Engineers in Mathematics. Sorry to break it to you if you hate Math.

  • @jjmike1jj CS has ALOT to do with math

  • It sounds fascinating, or at least it would if it was louder.

  • algorithims?

  • did he just say abelt??

  • (Lisp?)

  • a little philosophical "sugar" to make the mind-numbing "medicine" go down!

  • looking 4 SOFTWARE ENGINEERS, hit me up

  • ah, the legendary 6.001 class...

  • highly philosophical lecture.

  • nice

  • nice

  • @youcrot How is it stupid? In college, students first have to be taught to forget many preconceived notions in order to truly understand how a system works, and what they are dealing with. That's exactly what he's doing here. He's teaching them about the ESSENCE of computer sciences, and how it applies to the larger picture, not simply telling them how to work with technology. The single greatest thing an institute of higher learning can teach is how to think for yourself.

  • @salemcripple pt2: They don't simply tell you the answer, but how to find out the answer on your own, and if need be, how to make an answer if one isn't available. He probably goes into greater detail about the subject at hand, but this video it 10 mins out of a lecture that was probably an hour or more long.

  • great video

  • This video is actually highly interesting. I like what the professor stated about computer programs being actually "not real", meaning that they have little to no physical boundaries to the possibilities of a program. rather, the possibility of a program's capability is in all seriousness limited by one's own mind.

  • @LastRellik and the machine/ram/processor/videocard

  • Computer science it's essentially a branch of mathematics, so the question about if computer science it's science or not, it's really a question about if mathematics it's a science or not... Obviously this guy believes that mathematics it's not a science :P

  • Hal is a very cool teacher, I wish my lectures were like that!

But I don't agree with him saying "Computer science is not really a science", because that's still a debatable subject, and the academic departments still didn't really get to a consensus about it.

    Other than that, great class!

  • This guy is basically directing his opinion to students and portioning out as though they were universal truth. "Computer science is not really a science"? That's debatable.

  • where's part 2?

  • with computer scince i will learn how to program a frikin computer?

  • @exodiakingofcards Yes! Of course!

  • its a cool vid. thanks

  • its definatley a science what is he talking about. engineering is not the only thing in computer science

  • Wow. Finally someone who doesn't try to scare you with information but teaches you HOW to think, not what to think.

I recommend this video to anyone learning programming.

  • I really liked what he said towards the end. Computer Science is limited by the mind. I think if Benjamin Franklin were alive today he would major in Computer Science :)

  • post the nex part plss

  • MIT posted the videos themselves. Search for "SICP" and it'll come up right away.

Actually no, don't even.. you even had to ask, you don't deserve to be programming.

  • y not wat r u tryin to say

  • @gymboy19

You sound like a clueless fuck. Computing isn't even your place.

  • ty...

  • awesome, I don't agree with all what he said .. but awesome man! specially the second half (controlling complexity)

  • Thank you for this video

  • Have you read your SICP today!

  • Yes, yes I have! Twice, as a matter of fact!

    That's some good SICP...

  • The fact that the entire class is as silent as the grave whilst he's speaking just goes to show how much they respect him, and how awesome he actually is.

  • Every class at university I go is just like this.... Aisde from the 300 person lecture rooms. I assume this is a university lecture hall.

  • You're saying respect is still around?

  • I think this lecturer is simply amazing! I would love to have him as one of my CS lecturers.

  • me too seems really organized guy i want to be a game director in my life

  • Yeah i find him very interesting too

  • wow thank fuck my CompSci lectures arent thing boring

  • As Edger Dijsktra said, Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes...

  • if this is how classes are..then sign me up!!

  • LOL

  • Um so what if i wanted to study about and how to make processors like dual and quad cores, etc. Is that related to computer science?

  • Related? Yes, but you would be better off in an electrical engineering program if your interest is computer hardware.

  • Computer science is the art of telling a machine how to do things since you know your fellow humans at some point will fuck up xD

  • and you've never had a machine let you down?? lmao

  • computer is a small bibliotec like 10000000000000000 books together is more fast to anser your cuestion but still not perfect enought

  • This is so lovely, thanks for the video.

  • He has nice hand writing.

  • I achived satori.

  • without actually reading SICP? Preposterous.

  • Best......Video.......Ever

  • Just wanted to also say that both Abelson and Sussman are fine teachers in these lectures, I'm a programming beginner and I learned so much about the generic concepts of programming from these lectures. They both kept my attention throughout each lecture without me getting bored and they are both very talented at explaining things, although Sussman sometimes went a little too quickly for me. I also find Sussman quite amusing the way he chalks on the board with an almost demented rhythm..lol

  • You can download all of these videos in full in much better quality elsewhere on the web (the MIT website) although the sound quality is a little muffled on one or two of them. I think they're excellent, I've watched most of them on my iPod on the subway. The only trouble is I get a little lost with Sussman sometimes, he does have a tendency to dazzle you with his speed. Also you need to remember your calculus basics for one or two of them! These really turned me onto the concept of LISP.

  • 2:17 ----I come in PEACE----

  • 9:36 ---BILL GATES =]

  • THE SUSSMAN

  • Thats the traitor abelson fool

  • WHAT YEAR IS THIS FROM

  • 1994

  • *cower in shame*

  • iggy if you so great why are you on youtube? shouldnt you be busy

  • he looks like a decent teacher you jackass. they are hard to come by now a days. no one gives a shit you english fuck

  • if you call him a decent teacher.. then you haven't had a decent teacher.

  • you're a wanker, and you'll never be as accomplished as him.

  • too late, well on my way

  • Honestly, wouldn't have guessed. Keep telling yourself that though.

  • It's okay for you to express your opinion, but your opinion retarded.

  • It's okay to express your opinion on his opinion, but my opinion is retarded.

  • CS, Haoora!

  • This teacher is good. I've seen him preform miracles. His infinite algorithm argument is genius.

  • WHAT is it all about

  • computer science is the study of how problems can be solved with computer software. That is how I define it but lots of people think it means different things; even computer science professors. Software engineering is more business- and people- oriented as it is more concerned with the human resources in developing software.

  • WOW. "Computer science isn't really a science." Hmm.

  • yea, it isnt really science, because science = something happens naturally like physics, for example

  • Actually, Websters Dictionary defines science to be the following: "the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding" In all of the other definitions as well, the word natural does not come up, therefore I believe that Computer Science is indeed a branch of science.

  • I HAVE READ SICP.

  • My other car is a CDR

  • HAVE YOU READ YOUR SICP TODAY

  • This video is from 1986. Even so, he'd been teaching this now-legendary course for about 5 years at the time, and the equally well-regarded textbook for the course, which he co-wrote with Jerry Sussman, was first published in 1984.

  • Hair loss or dorm party gone wild?

  • damb, you are one ignorant motherfucker! LOL

  • Mrjo have you ever thought that it was you who wasn't smart?

  • so wait you need to e good at math to know about computer science

  • Very good. I want teacher like that.

  • oh hi i just wanna know if computer is hard or easy because i am trying to get master's degree. 5 years of university.

  • I Wanted To Major In Computer Science....But I Just FAILED Trigonometry!

So now I've switched to Multimedia LOL!

  • OMG, when i get lecturers like this, I end up falling asleep. Feel real sorry for those students

  • What he means is that "computers" as we have them today are just tools in what is largely considered "computer science" which is actually more along the lines of mathematics, computability, Turing machines/Godel's incompleteness theorem, etc.

It's not quite science, because it's not a methodology of proposing hypotheses and testing them against empirical evidence. It's not quite engineering, because the processes and methods aren't already known or elucidated upon. It is something of an art.

  • @JodoKaast I completely agree with your view. It can't be a science because it studies "fake" things, but it can't be an engineering, because the processes aren't already known and because the study of algorithmic problem solving is not really limited by the same factors that limit technology, but by the human imagination. It's pretty much a liberal art.

I really like Hal's lectures, even though I got kinda scared at first due to him being so blunt and sincere to his students.

  • PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME HERE

1)What is HIS concept of Computer science?

2)And what happen to his hair?

  • lol @ 2, seriously, wtf happened?

  • like omg he's balding! lame. shuddup.

  • computer as science is better than medicine

    comment pls

  • I wish I could've been in MIT back then in the 70's. They don't make lectures like this anymore. Now it's just "What do you feel CS is?" This guy has the balls to tell those kids that everything they believe in is wrong -- CS doesn't even exist. And he's still right. The complexity crisis is the biggest limitation of the Turing Machine, the psychological limit, and it gets all the attention.

  • This guy make a good point. I like to think of Computer Science is the art of problem solving.

... and yes I used Computer Science because that's what it's called which was the only thing about this video that sort of got to me.

  • There are a number of good reasons for studying programming. I think one of them is that it helps to develop problem-solving skills in general.

  • "Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes." -- Edsger Dijkstra

The point at about time 7:50 is something I have often discussed in my lectures on computer science - that the history of computer "science" is not entirely, but largely, the history of learning how to manage complexity.

  • Jesus, what's wrong with the guy's hair?

  • i think he studied too much at the point that he burned his hair

  • Thanks for posting this video.

You are a very good teacher.

    LadyDemocrat

  • I bet you were a Cobal programmer right? Before we were accepted into the condensed class that I attended we had to take an IQ test. There were several hundred people that took it and I thought that I failed the test. I scored the highest out of everyone. They couldn't believe it because I had never been to college prior to taking it.

Being a member of Mensa might have had something to do with it.

    LadyDemocrat

  • oh my gosh you must be so smart!

  • fascinating.

  • There's a girl in the class. Obviously fake ;)

  • Homie at 6:34 looked so lost. spaced out! Oh and this guy seems like a bad teacher.

  • Precisely. This instructor is brilliant. For those of you with little to no imagination, what he was getting at was that computer science is not the science of computers, or concepts based in reality, but at the most fundamental level the science of implementing and proving ideas in mathematics with the help of a computer. In CS, we speak of abstract machines and theoretical languages; you just can't work with this stuff in a "real" science!

  • It's Computer Creationism, Duh.

  • I take heed from this lecture, great stuff.

  • which guy?

  • This video was made in the 80's, and it about Computer Science. You don't need to know more than that. NEXT!

  • Yeah, they didn't have computers until the 90's!

  • "This video was made in the 80's, and it about Computer Science. You don't need to know more than that. NEXT!"

Absolutely not true. Just by your comment I know that you have no idea what computer science really is.

Sure the programming languages and technologies have changed a bit in the past 20 years, but the core ideas haven't.

I strongly recommend the entire SICP series of lecture to anyone interested in computer science and/or Lisp. Just Google "SICP lectures" to find them.

  • Computer Science is not a Science? WTF We have models for computability, logics theory etc. Isnt that science?

  • It is a science, the study getting from Problem to solution, not just checking solutions.

  • some of what my CISC professor said (who is actually teaching C++) reminded me of the general theme of this lecture.

  • I don't care for Scheme personally, but this is pretty deep stuff :)

  • this is high school or college in class?

  • These freely avaiable lecture are really, really good!

    Wonderful! (btw scheme rocks!)
