Lol, I'm reading the comments and I'm thinking to myself, "How on earth is that rape? He was totally into it!" Ha ha, The ignorance of some people is truly astounding. This is a tragic and beautiful love story and should be treated with respect, not insults by some religious fanatic. (I have no problem with religion, but some people just take it too far and complete misinterpret the bible's teachings)
This music one of Henry Mancini's masterpieces. If you don't know him, look up his music. He wrote the scores for many movies, but this is his finest, IMHO. Beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking. I love this movie to this day.
Good movie.... This is just a movie, but it makes you think about what is going on in the Catholic Church right now. When this movie/TV series came out, the pedophilia problem in the Church was not being thrown around in the news. I think the part of the priest is the part of a pedophile in the Church.
@pontedupre007 I disagree on account of father Ralph being a pedophile although I do agree that pedophilia is a major problem in the catholic church. To me his love for Meggie as a child was completely different than the love it grew into as she reached adulthood. When she was little, he felt the need to protect her and care for her as if he was her father. Then she grew up and it turned into something more. Their souls are infinitely connected. It's really beautiful, actually :)
I also agree, he was like a Uncle to her as a child, he helped her get an education for awhile and protected her from being beaten by the nuns. She needed to be around kids her age. Sad she was pulled out by her mean aunt. To be fair, Meggie did hit on him first as a young adult. Although he could have put up stronger resistance if he wanted to.
@2011lamb That is true. She grew up to be this beautiful, sensual woman like what is said in the series, Father Ralph is a man. And his reaction and longing for her as an adult is only to be expected.
Great tv mini-series. Also the great casting of classic veteran movie actresses of Jean Simmons & Barbara Stanwyck added so much to it as well. Of course the leads were incredibly cast well. I cry and cry when I watch this movie. It is also what so many gay people feel when they are just coming of age. "Forbidden" love. Rejection. Desire. Keeping secrets.
You know I will follow Anywhere the heart goes I will go until I know All life can be Love can hurt when you go Anywhere the heart goes Don’t you know it isn’t easy Being me I hold you inside where my love never dies And you will always live somewhere in me If you want to follow Anywhere the heart goes I will be here when you want me Any way you want me And good years bad years Would all fall away If I knew that your heart Would follow my heart Someday
Reading through other peoples messages, it seems once watched never forgotten! People then watch it over and over. I'm also one of those people! It manages to capture such a depth of feeling you just can't help but be moved by it. I adore it !
I love this movies,I've watched it so many times and yet I always fall in love with the characters, sooooo romantic even though I usually hate a sad ending story
heyy eleven year old!!!! that kinda reminded me when i was 11 4 years ago...thats when i watched it thats when i found out how love sounded, looked, everything is'nt this a beautiful story?
this song and thanks for putting it up, to me encompasses what life is not just in the movie but up and down than hopefully up again.a movie shows us visuallybut hearing this you can see your life going the same way.what is after this hopefully another were we dont suffer the pain of love and loss.
I read the Thorn Birds when I should have been reading shakespear for my English Lit 'O' Level... I had such a crush on Richard Chamberlain... then realised I was in fact jealous cos he got to snog rachel Ward... ahhh.. misunderstood youth... happy days... ))))
,,poor me, I'm not a Catholic priest but I live like one in my daily life, I have taken no vows of celibacy but yet have no contact with decent women looking for true love, what a sad state of affairs, and here you have this priest with the love of his life yet cannot make up his mind.
The music to this video is by Henry Mancini and it is on his album "In The Pink" It is called ; Meggies Theme. A favorite of mine as well. Try a soundtrack by the name of "Somewhere In Time" it is also very beautiful.

I have watched this miniseries about 20 times and I never fail to cry. The last scene when Ralph dies is so sad, I just bawl!! and that scene on the beach WOW!! Beautiful, Awesome, the very best ever!!
One of the best TV miniseries of all time! The most beautiful and saddest melody! Rachael Ward, I can't imagine anyone else playing "Meggie" Meghann Cleary, except you! You will always be Meggie Cleary! I thought, I was going to die from heart break from this movie! The last scene of the movie, with the plane flying away and this song! I truly cried myself to sleep that night! I didn't want it to end!
I read the book before I saw the movie. I did not actually see the movie until it went into syndication in the late 80's and I have watched it 8 times now. The entire movie is posted on youtube. I remember deciding if I ever had a little girl I would name her Megan and I did.
Richard Chamberlain looks so hansom in his priestly robe standing on the beach with Rachel Ward. sheeeesh.... there's something about a man in priests robe that is so darn sexy LOL...
It's safe to say that this is the only movie that I still and always felt like it was real life. I'm actually sobbing and could use some kleenex. I used to catch the Thorn Birds everytime I knew that it was on tv with my mom and sis. Thanks mom for making me watch the most magificant saga in the history of television, in my opinion
