  • cont) My main point, in making the comment, is that within the film itself the scene is overblown. People like Gandalf and Boromir have much more understated and therefore more powerful encounters with the rings power. You can relate to their characters whereas Galadrial seems to epitomise calm and serenity then suddenly performs a power mad scream out of no where. I am not saying its not in the book but the way in which it was visualised in the film leaves it open to parody, as we see here.

  • Is Dawn wearing a Blue Peter badge? LOL

  • Who says women comedians aren't funny?! I love these two!

  • who are u , great sphincter of light ? LOL !!!!

  • Yeah...I thought the bit where galadrial went mad was stupid in the original movie too. Now I shall depart forever from the tube of you and shall remain forever in mirth.

  • @BelatedCommiseration she didnt go mad. she had a taste of the tempting but dark power, and we saw a glimpse of the dark queen she would have become had she taken the ring.

  • @CT2507 Yeah...but it was so overblown in its translation as a scene and sort of seemed to come out of no where. Thats why French and Saunders picked up on it as ripe for parody...which of course it is and it is hilariously mocked by them.

  • @BelatedCommiseration what translataion? the scene is very true to the book. and both in the book and the film this scene is ment as as spiritual test. which she passes.

its dramatic because she is powerful.

this scene only goes show how powerful Sauron is if he can put the likes of her to the test. which just kicks the whole story to the next level of suspence and danger.

    didnt u read the book?

  • @CT2507 I have read the book but to be honest the scene with Galadrial is about as far as I got. I am one of those people who finds Tolkeins prose rather leaden and difficult to work through. The man has very little idea how to tell a story. However I do respect him for creating a complete world, with its own language. I respect the idea of the book itself rather than finding it enjoyable or relatable as a novel, but I should persevere I suppose....(cont)

  • @BelatedCommiseration yea, it is heavy reading in some areas. he also is not one of my favorite writers. but i respect him for the huge work that went into creating that world and its inhabitants.

  • @BelatedCommiseration Ever read The Hobbit? In terms of storytelling, it is much closer to the Scandinavian/Northern European model of the individual on mythic quest, almost more like a fairy tale in that it injects humor and some lighter moments and keeps a rather brisk pace. By contrast Lord of the Rings is much more in the Greek (and even Russian) tradition, where it presents as an epic quest with a much more serious good vs. evil narrative and a heavy does of historical realism.

  • @skuzinsk I have indeed read the hobbit. It is readable because Tolkein was aiming it at children and provided a certain level of back story without feeling compelled to go over board making it his tightest work. As you probably know Tolkein was an anglo saxon scholar and I can certainly see parallels between The lord of the Rings and Beowulf. However it has to be remembered the germ of the idea came from a childrens book and thats what it reads like at times, an over inflated childrens book.
