its basically a shot that just passes by the opponent's left or right (but not over, that's a lob). happens mostly when the opponent is close at the net.

really tough shot. Need a weighty racket to absorb the ball speed, shorten back-swing, and cut across the ball for the acute angle.

But never ever a player aside Federer would play such a passing off that approach. Only Federer can do that. Think as long as you can, but Federer is the only player who regularly play these shots off anything.

If playing badminton would have you learn to hit a shot like that all tennis players would be playing badminton.
