I liked the different conception and twists in this one, but I liked the original better. It was classier. The conflict between the low-born and the aristocrat had its charm, and the characters were more defined.
But as I said, I really liked this one. Special touch and interesting turn with the gay plot. However, I missed the "killing the Finnish girl" game and the more elegant Milo.
i didn't see the point of the original movie, nor of this remake. i just saw it because i've seen the director (Kenneth Branagh) and actors (Sir Michael Caine and Jude Law) in other films, so i thought this one might be worth it. the first hour, i more or less understood (and like the dialogue, which was juicy and sharp), but the final 30 minutes after the inspector reveals himself, i thought "Oh shit, what the fuck...?" i saw it twice and still have the same opinion as i did on my first viewng.
to be quite honest, i saw the original film because i like Sir Laurence Olivier (a truly great Shakespearean actor), Michael Caine and Joseph Mankewicz (the genius behind "All About Eve"), but i didn't care for it (ie. i hated it), and this remake manages to redeem itself, but alas, only for the first hour. the final 30 minutes i was like, "What the fuck is going on?" I like Kenneth Branagh, but this is the first film where i'm like "Mediocre effort from a heretofore excellent director."
i thought the first hour of this movie was brilliant, with sharply written dialogue, and excellent acting, whereas the final 30 minutes after the inspector reveals himself were just...weird. why did they go all faggoty? also, i thought the end of this one would be Milo killing Wyke (earlier, Wyke asks Milo "What sort of parts do you play?" Milo chuckles, and says, "Killers, mostly"; that's why i thought this remake would end differently). i just saw this cause i like Branagh, Law and Caine.
"Sleuth (1972) 6/10 - Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine"
Take a look at that... and compare between an absolute master piece of acting and directing and an absolute little shit.
Jude Law is just a very BAD actor (what a stupid faking voice and make up!!!!) and that pretentious and ugly-thinking-he's-handsome Kenneth Branagh is about one million light years far away from Joseph L. Mankiewicz as a director.
@gothicgeezer333 Caine was setting milo up to back up his burglary story. The whole gay thing was just to distract him and get him to put the gun down.
An interesting remake... the last scene - proposition and all - was the 3rd game (like in the 1972 film, though a different game) where Milo beats Andrew so Andrew shoots him. The gay thing seemed a bit contrived as part of Andrew's character though, not quite convincing enough. Jude Law had access to better disguises than Caine in the original, but Caine's made-up voice was better... and altogether the remake is more brutal and less sleuth-like. For our times?
@ilikeyouallot In what has suddenly become my personal canon, this last bit was all just another ridiculous little game, as they play off each other so well with only a few seconds to prepare. Milo decided he wanted to be rid of the woman and stay, so he riled Andrew up enough to try and shoot him- But it was another blank. The woman comes in, utterly panics over it and leaves, Milo comes to(He probably didn't mean to fall) and after Andrew throttles him a bit, they leave the country together!
thanks for uploading--thanks a lot, in all seriousness--but this was an abysmal sack of crap. I need to go watch the original right away. utterly pointless nonsensical garbage with zero of the intelligent drama of the play and the original. it's so bad it's almost a parody. the sexual tease at the end... whose freaking idea was that? what happened to the real, amazing ending? I hope to god anthony schaffer never saw this, I dunno if he's still around, but... puke.
@RedFox742 I tend to agree with your opinion. The original Olivier/Caine performance is on a completely different plane, thanks to the infinitely superior Schaffer screenplay. Also I think Branagh's cloak and dagger direction is merely irritating compared to Mankiewicz's brilliance in the original. I didn't quite puke watching this rip-off, but I'm not going to risk watching it a second time - ever.
damn my english. i mean that the first game was serious and that blank was coincidence. the old men in the end only forfilled what he had planned all the time ? didnt get it. im too stupid for that amigous mindblow movies. though this one was kinda special. very rare and good story. genious idea.
great idea but the story is too damn short. great movie apart from that is bit wierd the whole thing is about too men fighting over women who is playing them both
i fancy this movie. unique,mind-tricker, and intrigued until the end. its really suit what the producer said, "A rare film that would have been better longer."
@leftstanding I think that it was Milo's third game. I think that Wyke was serious and Milo played into it so that he could make him feel crappy. I think he might have overdone it just a tad, I doubt he meant to get himself killed....
I have to say. I'm not exactly sure how I should react to this version of the film. I don't think it's necessarily horrible, I liked the acting, but the way it ended leaves me silent. I definitely like the ending of the original better, but there are certain things that i like about this one. I don't know, kind of confusing, these mixed feelings. I liked them both. That's all, I guess.
Hmm, I posted my first comment before watching the end. The film is still pretty good, but this last 7 mins brings it down.
There's no tension, the clevereness of the original is lost... It's a great shame.... What could have been quite a good film is now a bit pants.... A shame.
I still haven't seen the original version, but I have to say:I am already in love with this film! Michail Cain is brilliant, absolutly brilliant! One of the best actors! Jude Law is also great.
For the obnoxious critics, I'd just like to point out, it's not as if this was a remake. It's a second adaption, penned by the fellow who wrote the original play, if I remember correctly, purposefully taken in a drastically different direction, and the two adaptions stand BESIDE each other, not against each other. That's why having Caine in both films, but in opposite roles, is so entertaining, IMHO.
I thought it was a very good film, kept me interested the whole time. But I am disapointed that they didnt show what Maggie looked like..???leaves me wondering???
just the long shot of michael caine is great. i think he just wanted to play around with milo tindle but he knew that milo was winning so he shot him, just because he didn't want him to win. i like to think the whole gay thing was real and that andrew actually had feelings, but i reckon he was just playing.
@gothicgeezer333 Caine was setting milo up to back up his burglary story. The whole gay thing was just to distract him and get him to put the gun down.
Watch the '72 version and then comment on this film. This version left out some of the best parts like when Tindle reveals that he has killed Marguerite (Maggie); the whole thing about Wyke and his games; and the great slapstick as well as subtle comedy relief present in the original. Not to mention a vastly superior ending and overall just better acting and better script in the '72 version.
