I think that we should continue operations in Afghanistan, but it should be WAY different than how we are going about it right now. I think that we should be mostly running counter-insurgency ops to disrupt the Taliban's chain of command in addition to peacekeeping missions and improving Afghanistan's infrastructure and overall quality of life. In other words, eliminating extremism at its roots.
That said, if there was an option for no war, I'd take it. :)
stupid idea photo986. that's what we did under the bush admin. the thing is these farmers are ordinary afghans and have nothing else, poppy farming is their income. if we destroy the poppies then they don't have anything, and will be forced to turn to the taliban for monetary assistance. we need to have the population on our side, not against us. what we are doing now (finally) is to help give the farmers aid and know how so that they can grow normal crops as opposed to opiates.

I think that we should continue operations in Afghanistan, but it should be WAY different than how we are going about it right now. I think that we should be mostly running counter-insurgency ops to disrupt the Taliban's chain of command in addition to peacekeeping missions and improving Afghanistan's infrastructure and overall quality of life. In other words, eliminating extremism at its roots.
That said, if there was an option for no war, I'd take it. :)

stupid idea photo986. that's what we did under the bush admin. the thing is these farmers are ordinary afghans and have nothing else, poppy farming is their income. if we destroy the poppies then they don't have anything, and will be forced to turn to the taliban for monetary assistance. we need to have the population on our side, not against us. what we are doing now (finally) is to help give the farmers aid and know how so that they can grow normal crops as opposed to opiates.

I think the lesson here is that we cannot nation build. These people will have to struggle on their own in order to come to the natural conclusion, that killing each other over religion won't work. It took the christians 100's of years worth of killing eachother to conclude that they should learn to live together. It wasn't forced, but a natural evolution. These people have to decide to free themselves. Until then, it's a futile effort. Maybe we should create a market for their food crops?

Escalating this war is not worth it because it would be us Americans who pay the heaviest price, & its not worth the cost of life & resources that a massive new surge would bring.
