Nice cut whet the way you wanted it. And that is one way to cut down a biger tree if you don't have the right saw. It is really dangerous though which you already know. I would rather invest in a bigger bar and saw than cut like that all day; and you need to look up more. And rape you thumb around the handle!
As a qualified tree surgeon I would beg anyone wishing to fell a tree who appreciate their lives NOT to use this method, EVER. It is complicated, your danger zones are dramatically increased and you WILL eventually kill yourself. The moment you find a problem tree e.g. leaning tree, dying tree etc. 1 of 2 things will happen 1) you will be very lucky and survive 2) you will die. Please do not think this is exaggerated, I have heard of many awful tree surgeon stories!!
@paulthewackojacko Curious. As a qualified forester and tree surgeon this technique is very close to one I was taught, and use, to fell a tree that has a diameter equal to or greater than twice the length of the guide-bar. You can quibble about use of chain-break etc, but why do you think there is something wrong with this technique?
@Gorteenminogue Basically there is no hinge left on the cut, the most important step in tree felling as I'm sure you understand. The hinge stops the tree from sliding back, spinning etc and increases the risk of the tree falling unsafely, this is then a game of luck as the tree will fell in the direction of the lean/weight/wind direction. If the tree is rotting from the inside out or is generally in poor health this increases the risk further. This felling cut is over complicated and dangerous.
@paulthewackojacko sorry didn't phrase that very well. Meant to say that if you cut through the hinge you increase the risk of the tree falling in an unsafe manner etc.
However, there is a hinge. Each side should be at least 6" (15cm) wide, and is usually left a bit thicker than normal to compensate for the middle being missing.
The felling cut seemed over-complicated, true, (not the way I was taught) but boring the hinge is widely used in W. Europe, and very useful for getting a large tree down, especially if the top has been removed.
@Gorteenminogue The hinge should be in tact in the felling process unless its a hung up tree in which case boring/removing part of the hinge is necessary. I guess techniques can vary between different countries etc. but this seems v. dangerous to me. I especially feel its wreckless to upload publically to youtube where any amateur with no experience could try a bit of DIY & more than likely get it wrong! If you don't have the right bar for the job, call someone! A few pennies is worth your life!
@paulthewackojacko Well, I agree with the last part of your message. When I went to France I was horrified by the bizarre ways trees were felled, but they seem to work!
Boring the hinge is (from my experience) safe: no different from felling a hollow tree.
As for uploading things of YouTube; there are videos on heart surgery.... Who's daft enough to think they can do that? Well, OK, I know idiots with chainsaws....
Nice job because : (A) You used a husky, not a stihl.Every one thinks stihls are the best but there not becaus the oil pumps break to easy and too much plastic parts (B) you have a small bar which gives you better power because theres no need for 32inch(max) bars or bigger because the put the saw under too much presure..well done

i dont get the point of this technique. its seems like a lot of extra work, that a regular pie and back cut could do. its cause you have a little bar then right? for more control.
Don't think I'd show the world the notch cut in the first tree, with the acute angle and "beak" in the middle. Not really necessary, nor possibly advisable to take out half the hinge. Not when you can bore in behind it from both sides.
One question: what's with all of the back-barring? That saw is jumping around in the operator's hands the whole time tryin' to kill him. It's not that hard to flip the saw over and use the other side of the bar. "Safety"? Harrumph.

that tree did not need boring out, and as for west coast loggers christ what would learn from them well how not to use safety/ protective gear how to ignore the over riding will to live out the day, forestry in the US has the highest death toll for a reason.
HAHAHAHAHA Ok Sweden you guys make some nice chainsaws but... what the hell was that? You should do a search for West Cost Fallers!! you might learn a little about how to fall a tree.
Thank god for the West Coast loggers. Is it possable for these clowns in nurse pants to jack-straw these pencils any worse? Twelve drunk Mexicans with dull wire axes could do a better job.
Now that is art! Screw mona lisa lolz. When I log I dont do anything this fance but I think I'm gana try this some time! It amazed me how low the splintering was. Love the fliping stick to haha. I did that once but the loged flew up in the air when it did the flip then landed in my trailor. I was highly amused :P
Fascinating footage! Thanks for sharing! I knew a tree surgeon once who opened a BRANCH office. He would go out on a LIMB for all his patients. Sadly, he eventually had to give up his practice....turns out he couldn't stand the sight of SAP !!!
rätt nice må jag säga, husquarna 346 xp såg? har en sådan själv, har sågat med stihl, jonsered etc, etc, genom åren men inget gå upp emot husquarna ute i skogen =)
I like it very much. On the other hand, I´ve never worked with a Stihl or any other saw, so they might be just as good. I did not know that John Deere made chainsaws, in Sweden John Deere is mainly known for harvesters and forwarders, other than the farmingindustry.
deer has never made saws. The stores are now selling Stihl, but were having Efco, an Italian saw co, p[rivate label saws for them. Efco used to be called Olympyk.
Why is everyone knocking his saw? A 346xp is a great saw. I have a few, my biggest a 385xp , but I'd definately like to have a 346. I'd prefer to fell with something bigger but hey to each their own.
About the overdimension comment, does not sweden just have little wood anyway, pine, aspen etc. The little processors you send over to the states can not handle big hardwood without falling apart in a trail of tears, though the logmax is pretty good.
I respect your technique BUT I must say, here in Wisconsin, if we took that long to cut one tree we could not afford to buy gas to go to work the next day. The only time we screw around for that long is when we are being "trained", the real world economics is a little different for us. I am not saying your not professional though, just perhaps getting paid better for your work.
this is the scandinavian way to do it.......this guy is not the fastest one, and i bet that i can do it long under the half time than him, still using the same tekniqes.......wee only uses what is nessesery and do not overdimentions the tools.....
well guys..whos not working in forest in sweden....you can't now the job.Filasogen to start your out bussines...good luck buddy.how much you can cut in one day and how much a machine can cut?now...this year the machines distroy a lot.but whay?the companis don;t make undercuting befor cuting and the machines must build a road by distroing the trees under 8cm that the peoples supose to cut them down if the company put them at work.
WHy did you waste so much time falling a one log tree with that fancy shmancy under cut...you should of had that tree on the groun 5 minutes ago.your fired
i have never seen some one cut like that before you should never have to put so much work into such a small tree and why in the hell did you use a wedge.you would be fired if you were on my crew you take to damn long!
I make the plunge cut at as in 2:08, but then pop a wedge in and just keep rotating around. Whatever works for you.
I've used Stihls and Husqvarna's both and the Husqvarna is much better, esp with the compression release. Usually two pulls on choke and the it fires up on the third pull. Stihls do not like the cold.
you cant beat stihl when it comes to reliability, ive had a 385 & 395 xp but would choose the stihl ms 066 magnum over it any day, granted the low vib features and power output on the 395 is better than the 066 when it comes to reliability you cant knock the stihl
bo u suck, i bet u got deep over cutting on your scarf, cutting that deeep on your scarf means your cutting into your holding wood which is the only thing that that stops that tree falling back on you or going side ways, your bar looks about 12inchs and only good for trimming, very dissapointing, sweden loggings still in the dark ages
Nice cut whet the way you wanted it. And that is one way to cut down a biger tree if you don't have the right saw. It is really dangerous though which you already know. that tree did not need boring out, and as for west coast loggers christ what would learn from them well how not to use safety/ protective gear how to ignore the over riding will to live out the day, forestry in the US has the highest death toll for a reason.

Awful lot of wasted fuel on something that shoulda used a basic plunge cut to drop?
arockyway2go 2 years ago
Nice to see decent tree felling on here, only criticism is the saw running in the cut with out chain brake when knocking wedges in

Sadly, he eventually had to give up his practice....turns out he couldn't stand the sight of SAP !!!

rätt nice må jag säga, husquarna 346 xp såg? har en sådan själv, har sågat med stihl, jonsered etc, etc, genom åren men inget gå upp emot husquarna ute i skogen =)

nice little saw,if you open the hi low a little bit youll get more rpm out of it

Nice to see sawing videos in youtube...
But my question - Why do you use a toy when cutting the big aspens? For those trees I would take at least 575XP 20" but recommended Husq 390XP 24".
This is just my opinion, because I get payd for cubics, not for hours spending in the forest.

how do you like your husky? I've got a john deere chainsaw with 24 inch bar and i absolutely love it!
kinghowie8 2 years ago 2
I like it very much. On the other hand, I´ve never worked with a Stihl or any other saw, so they might be just as good. I did not know that John Deere made chainsaws, in Sweden John Deere is mainly known for harvesters and forwarders, other than the farmingindustry.
PBGVPBGV 2 years ago 3
cool, yea john deere has been making chainsaws for alittle while, but they just stopped making them now but i still like mine
kinghowie8 2 years ago
deer has never made saws. The stores are now selling Stihl, but were having Efco, an Italian saw co, p[rivate label saws for them. Efco used to be called Olympyk.
rbtree 2 years ago
thats what i had heard that efco were making them but i guess it still has the john deere name on it

A bigger saw would spare like five minutes a piece?
If you do 50 big trees a day it becomes worth it... Otherwise, nah.

This is almost the correct way to take down a tree. Some mistakes were made but in generally it looked good.
Here in Sweden we put SAFETY first.
How many chainsaw-accidents occurs in the States every year?
I dont have all the facts but I guess that the accident-rate is much lower here.
And I agree to a comment above:
Why have a bigger saw when this one gets the job done?!
Naders77 2 years ago
Why is everyone knocking his saw? A 346xp is a great saw. I have a few, my biggest a 385xp , but I'd definately like to have a 346. I'd prefer to fell with something bigger but hey to each their own.

About the overdimension comment, does not sweden just have little wood anyway, pine, aspen etc. The little processors you send over to the states can not handle big hardwood without falling apart in a trail of tears, though the logmax is pretty good.
woodsbull620 2 years ago
I respect your technique BUT I must say, here in Wisconsin, if we took that long to cut one tree we could not afford to buy gas to go to work the next day. The only time we screw around for that long is when we are being "trained", the real world economics is a little different for us. I am not saying your not professional though, just perhaps getting paid better for your work.
woodsbull620 2 years ago
this is the scandinavian way to do it.......this guy is not the fastest one, and i bet that i can do it long under the half time than him, still using the same tekniqes.......wee only uses what is nessesery and do not overdimentions the tools.....
madsppp2000 2 years ago
well guys..whos not working in forest in sweden....you can't now the job.Filasogen to start your out bussines...good luck buddy.how much you can cut in one day and how much a machine can cut?now...this year the machines distroy a lot.but whay?the companis don;t make undercuting befor cuting and the machines must build a road by distroing the trees under 8cm that the peoples supose to cut them down if the company put them at work.

buy a chainsaw with more that a 2 inch bar

That is the most retarded technique of falling i have ever seen. First Get your self a chainsaw. Not a tomato cutter. 2 learn how to fall properly

WHy did you waste so much time falling a one log tree with that fancy shmancy under cut...you should of had that tree on the groun 5 minutes ago.your fired

im 13 and i have a stihl 025 i have been practicing this technique on tree stumps and it is harder than it looks the only hard part was the first cut
and how much to loggers make
Hick123Hick 2 years ago
the way of cutting is good
the tree always falls where you want it to go.
erwin4100 2 years ago
Took too much time, chainsaw bar is too small, too much oil/gas was used making unnecessary cuts.

i have never seen some one cut like that before you should never have to put so much work into such a small tree and why in the hell did you use a wedge.you would be fired if you were on my crew you take to damn long!
logginall 2 years ago
great vid we wont more
tompa666 2 years ago
I make the plunge cut at as in 2:08, but then pop a wedge in and just keep rotating around. Whatever works for you.
I've used Stihls and Husqvarna's both and the Husqvarna is much better, esp with the compression release. Usually two pulls on choke and the it fires up on the third pull. Stihls do not like the cold.
peterinbrat 2 years ago
you cant beat stihl when it comes to reliability, ive had a 385 & 395 xp but would choose the stihl ms 066 magnum over it any day, granted the low vib features and power output on the 395 is better than the 066 when it comes to reliability you cant knock the stihl
b280383 2 years ago
bo u suck, i bet u got deep over cutting on your scarf, cutting that deeep on your scarf means your cutting into your holding wood which is the only thing that that stops that tree falling back on you or going side ways, your bar looks about 12inchs and only good for trimming, very dissapointing, sweden loggings still in the dark ages
b280383 2 years ago
