Emo wasn't pop-rock music from the 2000', the original emo is Moss Icon, Jawbreaker, I Hate Myself, Saetia and many other bands.

Band like Juliana Theory have roots in Sunny Day Real Estate and Get Up Kids (especially the second one), which were part of the real original emo.

And while we're on this topic - "emo" isn't derived from "emotional".

It's from emotive hardcore, which sounds exactly how it's named.
