1:17 yeah so it was the gracies themselves that said size and strenght dont matter so, why is what you said here even relevant.
now then these women that dont like men 'going too hard' on them 'or 'touching certain places' (like say ass or tits), well bitches you knew what you were getting into when you signed up. either were equal or were not. you cant say 'dont go so hard' or 'dont rape me so hard' to an attacker. but hey, how you practice now determines how good youll be in life/death crunch
@TENNSUMITSUMA You obviously haven't rolled with someone way bigger/stronger than you. I'm a dude but with that weight/strength difference, there's way too much of a gap. This is especially true of no-gi. Having a guy who weighs 100lbs+ in your half guard with head and arm control sucks. When the Gracies said size doesn't matter, nobody had any grappling knowledge. If you pit a rooster vs a HW of equal skill, the rooster loses every time.
simple fact is the gracies got rich off the imbeciles of the world, telling them that shit, and fighting no name fucks and making up retarded win streaks to 'support' their imbecile claims. now every 5' 100 lbs bitch, thinks she can take out some 7' 500lbs guy just cause shes the 'dreaded' blue belt. people still swear size and strenght dont matter even though brock lesnar proved it does. so im not the one that needs to hear how i 'obviously' havent anything.
what i 'obviously' havent done is sucked the gracie dick. at 6'6" and 315lbs few are bigger than me.
'with that weight/strength difference....'
-well i guess that means bjj/gjj isnt as perfect as everyone including the gracies say.
'When the Gracies said size doesn't matter....'
- everyone that did wrestling and judo did. when i say size and strenght does matter, gracie nut drianers keep bringing up the akibono fight. if it matters it matters all the time including back then
@TENNSUMITSUMA Umm, we literally said the exact same thing.
When I said "When the Gracies said size doesn't matter, nobody had any grappling knowledge" it meant he was fighting bums who didn't know how to fight. Like I said "the rooster loses everytime" against a HW.
Weight is relevant because BJJ is a SPORT with weight classes which means that you need someone appropriate to roll with. You can't really practice if they are way bigger than you.Nobody said anything about rape or life/death.
people are still spoting that shit that size doesnt matter. whenever anyone says it does, everyone brings up the royce x akibono fight. people actually believe that size and strength dont matter.
what is hw and i dont get what rooster means
as for bjj being a sport, most gracie cum recepticles as well as the gracies themselves dont think so
simple fact is 5' 100 lbs bitches are talkin this bjj/gjj shit thinkin they really can beat guy that are 7' 500lbs
99% of the time, size does matter but some guys are so skilled that they can overcome that. Marcello Garcia has grappled and beat heavyweights who have fought for the UFC HW title including a legitimate world class grappler in Gabriel Gonzaga. You're being pretty ignorant in your arguments. There's no question that size does matter but you are thinking size is everything.
how am i being 'ignorant'? im not the one that to this day keeps saying size doesnt matter, and then go indoctrinating the smallest 5' 100 lbs female fuck that it doesnt matter. you yourself said '99% of the time, size does matter....' hey if you or anyone else want to take that kind of gamble when life and or limb is on the line, fine.
Funny, when I roll I expect an exchange of technique. If somebody pretzels me when I am trying to learn he is violating the agreement. That's what they are talking about. I'm willing to bet the instructor hadn't said, "use whatever you have to dominate your opponent." I also bet it wasn't after the yahoo had asked the female partner, "let's go full out to see if I can bully you."
@rmsangel242 In addition to this channel, you could also try the Gracie Academy, BJ Penn, Kurt Osiander, Stephan Kesting, and bjjweekly youtube channels. They’re very good also, and the last two sometimes feature female practitioners demonstrating techniques against larger opponents. Always nice to get different black belts’ perspectives on techniques.
A white belt is not always an accurate representation of the skill of whoever is wearing it. I wear a white belt, but I'm hardly a beginner since I've trained for years... There are plenty of other "white belts" out there with years of experience in jiujitsu, wrestling, judo, etc.
I respect her a lot and i enjoy Ken's videos. But i was hoping she'd be a black belt, you know it carries more authority. However, her perspective is good nonetheless. A similar thing happened to me when girls joined my boxing class. Some douchebags would punch them in the stomach with fair strength.
@MrBladeCrash the argument was" white belt tapping out a world champion black belt" not a white belt taping out a blue belt,im a purple belt and ive taped out people with higher belt ranks, but thats not the argument.....
@MrBladeCrash i have no doubt Saulo and other greats get taped out by there students, but i dont think there students were fresh white belts, but you can believe in what ever you like............
@ Ken, appreciate this site and your interviews and insights and comments and classy handling of the detractors. Getting women's insights on rolling with guys is *very important*, not just for fairness - making rolling accessible - but also learning from them.
thanks for this video Ken. Great video's and great info. When i roll with females i take a couple of things into consideration. Their weight, age, technique level. I NEVER try to smash anyone, this is a gentle sport. Upon slapping hands, i take it easy to test the waters with their transitions, positions, speed, etc.. Then I adjust my skill to give them and myself a great roll session. Many should do the same. This is not street fighting, we're trying to help each other.
As for all these comments about not getting tapped out, I believe if you aren't tapping you aren't learning. When I roll with someone less experienced or lighter I try to give them a chance. On the other hand, I never feel that someone is too rough because I should be able to handle it. If I can't it shows I need to improve my technique.
IMO being a woman doesn't make a martial artist more fragile. It's just that, ON AVERAGE, women are smaller and weaker than men. Take the same precautions you would rolling with someone who weighs 50 lbs less than you regardless of gender. Interesting topic Ken, one that is relevant to many dojos today!
I roll with this one girl at my dojo all the time, I don't find it necesary to go easy on her because they are trying to learn too I just keep away from muscling my positions i work in my guard alot rather than going top game and laying on her. For me th hardest part with rolling with girls is being comfortable :P
Man people can be so stupid (Greek Salad and Anon), I wish sometimes that BJJ gyms had IQ requirements to join. Would make instructors jobs a lot easier. I think your video is fantastic Ken but unfortunately the people that need to hear it most are too dumb or egotistical to understand the message.
I'm not sure why some people think 50lbs is not a big difference. I have rolled with bigger people and it's difficult to try to sweep them or submit them if they have at least a few months of experience since they can easily overpower you. I guess there's a lot of future BJJ stars on the net.
Bottom line, if you can flow roll and you are technical, then women should have no problem rolling with you. If women don't want to roll with you, that means guys who are the same size as them probably don't want to roll with you either.. the speed at which i roll with somebody depends on their weight, not their gender. that being said, most women are inherently lighter than most men which means that you have to roll with them accordingly.
I really don't like rolling with women because its a no win situation. I know that not all rolling it about winning, but my point is that you can be going light with a female and not trying to use your strength, and then she is trying to rip your head off. I think technique is important and drilling no matter who you are rolling with.
thank you for posting this. I was recently admonished for rolling to hard with a female. I figured that she was the same belt as me, I would treat her like I treated any other training partner... I was yelled at, I felt very bad about it and will always roll lighter with women..
If you don't want to get smashed by bigger people, don't roll with bigger people. If you are injured, stay off the mat until you heal up enough to roll. If you step on the mat with a legit injury don't ask for pity from people. You knew the risks going in. I get tired of people who make excuses when they get tapped out. We've all been guilty of it at one time. But, some people are habitual offenders. Work on your defense, not cry.
Dont get me wrong ken, im a big fan, but a blue shouldnt get tapped by a white with only 50 lbs weight difference, and then be rude and sarcastic about it, making excuses and all.
@greeksalad,im sorry world champions NEVER could get taped out by a white belt (unless he gives you some charity submission)
its a interesting point this girl makes because my girlfriend also trains bjj and she has been close to quitting a couple of times because guys are just smashing her with pure strength(specially the white belts)now she tries to avoid the idiots and when she feels like the guy is muscling she tells him to stop and consetrate on technique and that often helps,
@iGreekSalad i disagree with you. someone people with lower belt level go for the kill even though it's just rolling time. people get caught in any belt level. Belts are not to be taken in stone. There are MANY blues that tap out purple, that tap out brown, that tap out black... It doesn't mean they are any less skilled. i got tapped by blue belt multiple times when coming back from broken rib. It happens. technique is important to learn in class, it important to execute in a competition.
@iGreekSalad only 50lbs? your an idiot who has never stepped on the mat. and many whitebelts have been training nearly 2 years, a high white near blue can be pretty crafty plus a 50 pound weight advantage, not hard to believe.
@iGreekSalad suck me at the next station? makes sense? and no you have never stepped on the mat if you have, you would know that every 25 lbs you give up is the equivalent to giving up a belt rank.
roll with a purple belt the same size as you and roll with a four stripe white 50 pounds bigger, you'll see what i mean.
@carlsongracieteam You hit the nail on the head. When you roll with someone a lot bigger than you, suddenly, everything becomes a lot harder to execute. I'm a blue belt, female, usually hold my own against most guys my rank and weight, but last night, rolled with a white belt 75 lbs heavier and couldn't defend anything and got tapped out left and right. GRRRR, it's definitely motivation to better my game.
@nkkny1 I agree I'm a smaller guy, about 5'6 135, so I developed my open guard. It allows me to keep bigger guys away while, I can still attack. the big guys kryptonite is leg locks. I know a lot of bjj purist schools do not allow them which is dumb. But vs bigger guys, 50/50 type guards are the way to go.
@iGreekSalad why not?? i was white belt for 5 years and i could tap out purple belts, just like Ken said belts its for ur pants, i been in bjj for 15 years and lm still brow belt, where i come from in Brazil its 4 years for each belt
@iGreekSalad i JUST got my blue belt a few weeks ago, and the other day in class i tapped one of the oldest (as in been there the longest) purple belts in my gym. When it happened, we looked at each other, high fived, and went right back to rolling and didn't even make mention of it other than when we were both leaving he congratulated me for it. After i tapped him that one time, he proceeded to get me about 5 more times that night before we left. Anyone can get a tap on anyone.
@iGreekSalad I train with a guy that is not belted that taps Purple belts all the time.. And I am certain he would hold his own against a BlackBelt.. It's the nature or the sport, you make mistakes.. Thats how you learn. I learned a triangle from being put in it so much..
@iGreekSalad You're telling me a blue belt shouldn't be able to get tapped out by a white belt. Ever? Even if the White Belt is has 10 plus years of wrestling experience and is a 2nd Dan in Judo? Your logic is messed up.
@M4RUNG4 Obviously she didnt' say it like that, she got tapped, and that's not the problem. It's that she got tapped by a whitebelt, and blamed it on a weight difference, taking the piss out of him and laughing. Cool story, bitch got her blue at a mcDojo.
@iGreekSalad Right. Because a person from a McDojo would get second place at the nagas. I'm sure everyone who medaled there will be pleased to hear that they are in fact from a McDojo.
What an idiot? 50 lbs less stop taking the piss, Bjj is about being able to tap bigger people. Sure 50lbs lighter but your a blue.. Seriously dont make excuses, pathetic.
@iGreekSalad must not have ever rolled with anyone bigger than you. you have no idea how hard it is. not to mention she is a female (just like myself) so she is going to have a strengh disadvantage as well. EVERYTHINg is ten times harder. sprawling, shooting, hip escaping, closing your guard, etc. im a yellow belt and i go aganist another kid who is 50 ibs heavier than me. it isnt easy no matter what. it's like gsp grappling with silva.
I find it funny that a blue belt is lecturing people on how to roll. I kind of get annoyed by people who expect people to pity them on the mats. Just irritating.
@918Anon she places 2nd in naga when she competed. Most don't have enough balls to even step on the mat and compete. And i don't find it funny that she lecturing people. You are a fool for making that comment. If you have a self respected instructor, and he read your comment, he should kick you out of your academy. You believe you are superior because she's a blue belt? RENZO GRACIE said it himself, he learns from ANYONE, white, blue, purple, to be close minded is stupid. I feel bad 4 u
Everyone is different. Some women expect guys to go lighter on them, and some are totally offended by it. I think the best way is to find a happy medium, and most importantly, TALK to your training partners.
I thouht this was gonna talk about not being a creep and intentionally getting put in the mount and triangles for a sexual experience and doin north south chokes to try and make them horny. :( lol

I find it funny that a blue belt is lecturing people on how to roll. I kind of get annoyed by people who expect people to pity them on the mats. Just irritating.

As a general rule, the higher rank should set the pace. I have pushed that rule for 30 years. That said, a meathead is a meathead.
