Remember people, food chain. The mongoose would happily eat a baby crocodile (and they do) so it's hardly some atrocious act.

Alligators and crocodiles have been at the top of the food chain for more than two hundred million years. They don't act gratuitously but instead only according to their nature. They keep the world a healthier place by thinning herds (etc) of their weak ones (so as not to pass on the genes of, say, a mongoose who doesn't pay attention). More importantly, they scavange their environment, finishing off the carcassas of those who have already died.

Mongooses are very agile animals. I'd say it was distracted eating something else, with it's back to the crocodile. Crocodiles have small brains but they're opportunistic bastards, he obviously thought the mongoose was so distracted that it was worth coming out of the water and walking up the bank to get it. Crocs don't do that very often.
