It's sad that Paul gets so much flak for making a tune for kids to dig.
He's a father, I'm a father.
What's so wrong about sharing stuff that makes your kids happy?
My children used to love singing along to 'Yellow Submarine,' 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da,' 'The Frog Song,' 'Mary Had A Little Lamb,' 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer,' not to mention 'Octopus's Garden' and 'Piggies.'
Giving joy to children is a good thing. It's not a reason to attack someone.
More artists should remember that children matter too.
The BBC banned Hi, Hi, Hi for drug references. Then the BBC babbed Give Ireland Back to the Irish, The BBC controlled all legitimate radioand tv in England in those days, so these songs got no official airplay. He decided he had to do something so syruppy sweet as sort of retaliation and this song was made. The
video debuted on the Andy Williams Show in the US.
@yabbadabba1975 The BBC also refused airplay for Back Seat Of My Car. Beatles songs which at one time were 'banned' by the Beeb include A Day In The Life, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and the Ballad Of John And Yoko. Songs from John's Plastic Ono Band album also fell foul of the BBC's censors - Working Class Hero, Well Well Well and God.
Paul was effectively making a sarcastic point to the BBC with Mary Had A Little Lamb - "Don't you want any adult listeners?"
@GerryMATW My recollection is that Ballad of John and Yoko was not banned in the UK. The first UK no 1 not to be played on the BBC was Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus. Agree about Lucy In The Sky WIth Diamonds and A Day In The Life. I suspect Working Class Hero caused a problem because of the word "fucking" being sung twice.
@cbak12sg You may well be right about 'The Ballad...' I do remember John complaining that a lot of American stations wouldn't play it so I could be getting mixed up with that. The BBC did ban* 'Cold Turkey' at around that time though.
*Technically, the BBC always claimed that it didn't "ban" any songs; it merely omitted them from its playlist!! So that's all right then.
@yabbadabba1975 Hi! Hi! Hi! was released after MHALL which was also banned due to a drug and sexual reference. This song was released in protest of Give Ireland Back to the Irish ban by BBC.
@dobrautero. Yes it was a piss take of the BBC and media generally who kept banning his stuff. So he came up with this as a way of saying, "you'll only play this sort of harmless stuff, so here you go".

@GerryMATW
Piggies was by George, and was essentially about politicians.

When the song was released, most radio stations in America preferred to play the B-side Little Woman Love.
