@NstuffMusic Would it be possible to get a rock / metal sound out of an Am. Std. by changing maybe just the bridge pickup with a single-coil-sized humbucker?
@kkgggy Yes, definitely I have two Strats with the single coil size Seymour Duncan humbuckers and the sound great. You might want to check out the Seymour Duncan JB Jr. or the Hot Rails. Any questions let me know.
Wow! that was some great playing. By the way, what amp are you using? I'm looking in to purchasing a new one, and I really enjoyed the sound from yours! How much did it cost you?
@GrantGuides I'm using the Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212. $799.99 at nstuffmusic with coupon code FENDER35. It has a great clean tone and take pedals really well making it super versatile.
Hello NstuffMusic. I have an american deluxe, SSS, with N3 pickups, rosewood fingerboard. The sound seems very dull, without the presence of mids. Do you like the sound of the american deluxe?, Peavey bandit is my amplifier 112 which will not let me get a better sound?. I do not know ... the sound of the american standard seems sharper and more interesting. What is your preference with these two guitars?, What would you choose and why?
@fengib74 Noiseless pickups are great for what they are made to do. However they are not a true single coil due to the fact that a second coil is used to cancel the 60 cycle hum. So, they can't accurately reproduce the sweet chime and harmonics of a true vintage single coil. But they are quiet and not as harsh as a regular humbucker. It's a toss up. You'd have to make a personal decision. What's more important, the sweet chime of single coil or no noise noiseless pickup.
@NstuffMusic Thank you very much for answering Mr. Marks. I understood perfectly, I know it's a personal decision. I would ask you to acquit me just a few more questions, I promise not to ask more. What do you think of buying a guitar relatively high price and then change the pickups, not take away the essence?, Or should I worry about getting the sound I want by changing pickups no matter knowing that features quality materials and my guitar is fairly regular basis.
@NstuffMusic I am hoping to get a deluxe HSS just for the playability. However, this is my first fender and I thought of buying a fender because of the sweet chime. So my solution, get the deluxe then if I can't live with the N3's then I will swap them out for ones that get put on the standard?? is this plan possible??
@Musicman2415 The American Deluxe has a lot of great features that make the guitar perform better than the American Standard....It really sets it apart!
The American standard stratocaster isn't even close to The legendary tonal versatility of a 2007 highway one single coil fender stratocaster And I do mean NOT! Even close!
@SLECtheBAND way better. texas special scooped mids. no humming. really gets Mayer's tone. american standard (which I own and love) sounds like a $100 Silvertone strat pack compared to Mayer strat. you can hear all the noise really clearly on this demo. not a problem for high gain Nirvana stuff (and the pickups are very hot) but the standard can't do the beautiful Mayer tone like the mayer sig strat can
@JustinTube81 Really 2 different guitars. The American Standard has more of a modern twist 9.5" radius instead of the vintage 7.25" radius. Also the back of the neck is a satin finish instead of a nitro finish (personal preference). The American Standard has Medium jumbo frets instead of the smaller vintage frets which I think makes the guitar easier to play. The American Standard tremolo is more stable as well with the 2 point bridge. All in all it's a personal preference. Hope that helps.
@NstuffMusic thank you, I think im just gonna go with the American Standard. I played it the other day and its great, and I just dont have money for the 62ri
Why i said that u should never buy a guitar of the internet is because the quality of each guitar is diffirent. If u like the specs of a guitar, try some of them. Not just one.
@comedybenj i personally hate gibsons desings, I also hate todays fender. Take a look at some godin guitars, made in the us and only $700. Spend the rest on a nice amp. But if i were you, i would go to the guitar shop an just try them. Never buy a guitar straight from the internet.
This is why we at Pianos n Stuff really take pride in each guitar bought off our website and here in the store. We are so anal when we go over the instrument we are shipping. I do a lot of the set ups on the sold guitars and I treat is like that guitar is for me...weather it is a $129.00 or a $4,000.00 guitar.
so does it stay in tune if i dont use tremolo? i dont use it because i dont like it but i heard that it doesnt stay in tune well anyway. even when its fabrically new...
@Qoooba95........... It can stay in tune well if it is set up properly. You can't go crazy like you could with a Floyd Rose, But they are not terrible either.
@Qoooba95 If you set the tremolo against the body so it does not float and the strings are put on correctly and the guitar is set up correctly it will stay in tune.
@NstuffMusic I've saved up £1500 to buy my first guitar and I'm stuck between the Gibson SG Standard and the Fender American Standard Stratocaster. I would play stuff like Jimi Hendrix,The Who,Sex Pistols,Iron Maiden,Venom,The Beatles,Saxon,AC/DC. Which guitar would be better for these styles?
@666vicc666 They are still a true single coil pickup so they do hum. They sound smoother and are more even sounding from low's to high's than the Standard Stratacaster.
So, I have a Mexican strat right now and it sucks at staying in tune. I'm talking tuning in the middle of a song. Are the American ones a lot better? Please tell me so. I do a lot of bending...
@ilivestrong25 The American made Strats do stay in tune better however any guitar that is not set up properly will not stay in tune. The strings need to be put on properly and the bridge and neck need to be set up properly.
@urlovedbeetle The Deluxe Player Strat is made in Mexico. The American Standard Strat has way more attention to detail in the craftsman ship. Rolled edges on the fretboard, staggered machine heads, 2 point tremolo, Tone knob wired to bridge pickup and comes with hardshell case.
hey, to get a classic rock sound like Alex Lifeson (Rush) or Angus Young (AC/DC), or Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), should i get this guitar or the Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded? or the Gibson SG Standard?
@astrophysics123 All the players you mentioned are Humbucker users. SO maybe a Fender American Standard with a humbucker would more suit your need. The Gibson Les Paul studio faded is a nice instrument for the money though!
@StratPlayer4Life The 62 Hot Rod has a fatter neck carve and the 62 vintage pickups that have more chime than the American Standard. they are comparable as far as quality they just feel and sound different it's a personal preference.
I really like when i find someone who can bring excellent sound from a excellent guitar. There are many "good" players aound, who just like to play as fast as they can, and there are those who has the skills and can bring foward clean and beautifull sound. Good playing, man...
I was under the impression that strats were noise free as long as they were played clean. I played one through a clean channel at a music store and notice no hum at all. Does the standard strat hum even when played clean?
I know it's boring, but he really should play the same guitar line when demonstrating the pickups. When you alter your style and pick attack that much, it's harder to gauge the subtleties.
Mark. Love the way you straight-up demo guitars. Thanks for that. ?= I'm btwn an Am. Dlx strat and an Am Std. I play classic rock, surf and some light jazz stds. @horsezens If the American Deluxe is in your price range it has more tones and no single coil hum. The neck would does matter a little the maple is a little brighter and also has a different cosmetic look as well. You really cant go wrong with either one.
@jikarpert I COULD NOT BE SEEN STRAPPING THAT POS GARBAGE ON MY BACK, BUT IT LOOKS GREAT ON YOU!!! SORRY....HAD TO..actually the reason i am here is because i think i actually want one..
@10Sunburst Yes, you have staggered machine heads, 2 point bridge, they round the edges of the fretboard it also includes a hard case instead of gig bag.
I see! Let's suppose that I wanna buy one amr std strat, what's your best price? Be generous, all right! I know that it's your job but thanks anyway, for your concern. All the best.
I'm surprised. . .I'm in the market for a new Strat again, and this one seems to sound best to my ears--at least according to the sounds I'm after. Thanks for this review.
Heay, I'm searchig for a Fender or other brand Stratocaster! I have played on the Fender American Special HSS and on this American standard. I liked the sound of the american standard the most, but i loved the neck of the American special (it felt like it was little bit faster and smoother. Is there a guitar with the sound of the American standard and the feel of an american special hss ?
The Am Spcl, and Am Std use different pickups. As far as the neck goes, you may want to try a few American Stds. Although they are supposed to be the same, no two guitars are identical. Or possibly consider an American special but swap out the pickups.
great review fella, some fantastic tones to be found within these guitars and all for a completely affordable price....one quick question, what guage strings are you playing?
im on the fence about getting an american or mexican....if the american is alot better ill spend the extra money, obviously the american is probably better made but could you tell me any key differences other than the price and where they are made ??haha...just so i can get an idea of how much better it is
@ospbsbll91591 The American Standard Strat comes with a hard-shell case, They roll the edges of the fingerboard to give it a broken in feeling, they use staggared tunners, they have a 2 point tremolo which feels smoother, the pickups are nicer and lastly the tone knob is wired to the bridge pickup. I think it's worth the extra money! $849.99 with case at NSTUFFMUSIC.
@ospbsbll91591 Also, when listening for tone, listen for how 3d it is, and does ti retain fullness etc with that open, projection of sound. If it does and the next guitar doesnt, its probably better! Presence and 3D quality is what great tone is all about when compared to cheaper guitars which dont as much. Just go into a store, try a Squier, MIM standard, MIM Deluxe or Roadworn, an American Special, then an American Standard. The standards i mentioned earlier notch up as you go up the ranges.
I have an american standard (2010), but i can't achieve a tone like this. Are you using any effects? Or is it just the amp you use? (I'm using a laney VC-30). Cheers
Great playing, good review, I just kinda' wish most of the review had had less - or NO - reverb:/ I like reverb, in general, but I think having any kind of "wash" on the sound presents a somewhat less accurate representation.
@davidtheguitarman yep trust me they are like uber noisy if u have like a big gig with lights comin down to u etc. single coils pickups are naked which means the magnetic frequency is not covered with plastic or metal from the actual pickups. This gives the signature strat tone and amazing playability that they have
UPS is delivering mine today! I am getting the blizzard pearl. I am so excited about it. I have quite a few guitars, but I am just getting around to getting a Strat. I hope I like it as much as I think I will.
I would have to say the stratocaster and telecaster were absolute breakthroughs in American technology, not just in music technology.

Is there a guitar with the sound of the American standard and the feel of an american special hss ?
snowfreakbjorn 1 year ago
@snowfreakbjorn
The Am Spcl, and Am Std use different pickups. As far as the neck goes, you may want to try a few American Stds. Although they are supposed to be the same, no two guitars are identical. Or possibly consider an American special but swap out the pickups.

Hi Mark, can you tell the diferences in the sound between the hss and the sss? Good sound check by the way, as usual...

@10Sunburst Yes, the Humbucker is hotter and fuller sounding than the Single coil. Better for the more aggressive style's like rock.

im on the fence about getting an american or mexican....if the american is alot better ill spend the extra money, obviously the american is probably better made but could you tell me any key differences other than the price and where they are made ??haha...just so i can get an idea of how much better it is
ospbsbll91591 1 year ago
@ospbsbll91591 The American Standard Strat comes with a hard-shell case, They roll the edges of the fingerboard to give it a broken in feeling, they use staggared tunners, they have a 2 point tremolo which feels smoother, the pickups are nicer and lastly the tone knob is wired to the bridge pickup. I think it's worth the extra money! $849.99 with case at NSTUFFMUSIC.
NstuffMusic 1 year ago

Cheers

the tone is excellent.
classic fender sound.like a fender should be. even with the traditional hum

Mark,
I dig your playing.
Could you review a Schecter Tempest Custom? I'm trying to decide between that and an Ibanez S570, which you have reviewed very nicely.
Thanks!

@KutWrite Thank you and sorry but we don't have a Schecter Tempest at the store to review.

Great playing, good review, I just kinda' wish most of the review had had less - or NO - reverb:/ I like reverb, in general, but I think having any kind of "wash" on the sound presents a somewhat less accurate representation.
... Just sayin':)

it's normal that the pickup it's so noisy?
davidtheguitarman 1 year ago
@davidtheguitarman single coils tend to be noisier
magictownwizards 1 year ago
@magictownwizards yeah I know, but my strat it's not so noisy.
davidtheguitarman 1 year ago
@davidtheguitarman yep trust me they are like uber noisy if u have like a big gig with lights comin down to u etc. single coils pickups are naked which means the magnetic frequency is not covered with plastic or metal from the actual pickups. This gives the signature strat tone and amazing playability that they have

UPS is delivering mine today! I am getting the blizzard pearl. I am so excited about it. I have quite a few guitars, but I am just getting around to getting a Strat. I hope I like it as much as I think I will.
