The Army has a very different place in society in the Middle East than in the West. The Army's the body that fought the Israelis (which although not so great for us makes them popular there) and they're the main melting pot for the different tribes and communities there. Look at Turkey, where the bulwark of democracy has actually been the army to a greater or lesser extent. Whether this actually works out like it did in Turkey though we'll have to wait and see.
The worst part about this, is that there are already conspiracy theories out there that the protests were created by the USA and the EU. Jesus fucking christ, these people have no sense of shame...
