These are just a few examples of WORDS and PHRASES that dogs can understand quite easily when spoken to them. Dogs can, albeit to a limited extent, understand human language. They just can't speak it themselves...yet.

@TheBridgeGang They understand commands and are capable of limited understanding of words that refer to concrete things but what I mean is that dogs can't and don't understand abstract concepts so it's a little funny when u see people talking to them. yes they understand "treat" cause after a while they make an association between a conditioned stimulus (sound\word) and an unconditioned stimulus that produces response (the food) but that's about that.

That's how anyone understands language though. That's what language IS. They can also understand other people's names, a phenomenon that debases the notion that all they can understand are 'trigger words' linked to food.

Language (for everyone) is a system of sonic pointers to actualized phenomenon that has been experienced before by the subject. And dogs, in a much more simplistic manner, use it the exact same way that we do.

@mssucks3462 Even if dogs can, or cannot understand the actual meaning of words, just as one going to a foreign country may not understand certain vocabulary, body language + tone of voice is a good indication of what the person is speaking, wants the listener to understand. Animals have that capability, perhaps not to the degree that humans do. Also, people talk to animals because animals like the attention, even if they don't understand what you are saying.

My dog begs and whines to jump into bed, and when I give him room, he then proceeds to plop himself dead center and attempts to roll me off. I shove him over, he growls at me, I shove him harder, and then he growls louder and huffs over to the foot of the bed where he then tries to crawl under my feet. Usually I end up forcing him to leave, but sometimes he ends up moving to the other side and staying there the whole night. Cute, but a total pain.
