Pete was the most popular member of The Beatles at that time.A promoter put Pete up front at a Valentines Day dance..and he was basically dragged off the stage by the girls...they slept in his garden at his house...they played a show at the BBC radio station in Manchester in early 1962..when they left the studio Pete was mobbed by the girls....when he was fired in August 1962 there were riots...girls yelled"Pete Forever...Ringo Never!"...or "Pete Is Best"...Pete was closest to Lennon..
George Martin claimed in Compleat Beatles that Best's drumming was substandard in his opinion. But if you listen to the audition demos, or records like "Cry for a Shadow," it doesn't sound like he's any different than Ringo, doing the 4/4 backbeat and all that. Must've been strictly a personality thing with the others.

What's with Pete Best's sense of entitlement and portraying himself as a victim. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison formed the Beatles, and wrote the songs and took the band to the stratosphere. What if they fired Pete Best just because their testicles itched? Or just because they felt like it?
I don't know where you get the "victim" thing here ... Best is extremely gracious ... doesn't have A SINGLE NEGATIVE comment for any of the others ... even Ringo. I think he's unusually objective considering what was pulled out from under him, with no real warning and without the courtesy of a real explanation.
@mkrobinson95 He is like that to make the money, i mean if he is going to slag off the beatles he aint going to get his interview is he?
He is trying to be cool about everything and want to get paid for the interview, pete best loves the attention and has some interesting stories but he is digging away at the same time..
tells the interviewer that martin didnt like him and didnt really think ringo was any better, he is slowly chipping away and showing his bitterness
@26highstreet - I don't think he's showing bitterness at all, just merely recalling the story from his point of view. As far as his motivation to "be nice" simply to make money on interviews, etc. ... anyone who knew Pete back in the day seem to indicate that he was always a nice, unassuming fellow ... certainly not the opportunist you make him out to be. But you, of course, are entitled to your opinion, which is all it is.
@mkrobinson95 And your views of him are just that an opinion, i see a manipulator at work riding on him being in the beatles, others see him as a victim and promote the underdog i mean the british always like the underdog dont they?
The 10 tracks done on there promo album, that was sent around to record companies was good and best played on them all.
Im not saying he was a bad drummer or any worse than ringo, just that if he was as good and popular as he says, why didnt he become famous?
@26highstreet continue. And why did he try and gas himself a couple of years after leaving the beatles, he must have been very bitter.
When pete got married SHE LOVES YOU WAS was number 1 in the uk charts and was about to become the biggest selling record of all time.
In 1965, 3 years after leaving the group he attempted suicide and that was due to the fact that he had missed his chance at fame and his own band were not getting anywhere even with the beatles connection
@26highstreet - I don't think he tried to kill himself because of bitterness, but because of hopelessness & depression (that's not the same thing). Thankfully his brother & Mona found him & his life was spared. He gave up music 3 years after that & worked an honest living helping others in his civil servant position; in other words, he got over it. And if he was bitter in the beginning, so what? That would be understandable. I'm sure the way he was sacked wreaked havoc to his pysche.
@26highstreet - you are overly suspicious. All one can do is take him at his word ... which has been consistent for 30 + years. You said you "see a manipulator" ... well, you may "see" all sorts of things, but if your ears are clear, you can simply hear him telling the story from his point of view.
You guys should do a little research on Terry Gross before calling her an idiot. She's pretty smart. She often asks questions that are obvious and maybe even a bit critically daunting. She was stating the obvious. I'm a big Beatles fan and maybe a bit biased but it doesn't stop me from hearing that this recording is a bit rough. She was just commenting on that fact in an objective manner.
Yes, I agree with you. Maybe the major reason was that, but propably there are others as well. But to be fair with Pete, "Cry for a shadow" and some other numbers had good drumming. And guys listen to Paul's singing. It's horrible. In that song, all played very badly. Pete hadn't a second chance.
yes, I think since this was an original, and one of the songs they were considering for a first record, that G. Martin would have taken a dim view of the drumming in that particular demo. Best plods along, tho the Beatles must have had something to do with the tempo choice. But the same thing happened to Ringo after they brought him in: Martin wanted a studio pro to do the song, and the first release DID have studio drummer Andy White, and NOT Ringo!
You should look her up on Wikipedia. She's one of the great interviewers of our time. She's had a very successful career and is quite intelligent in my opinion. I'm just sticking up for her because I think 'Fresh Air' is the best thing to ever happen to National Public Radio.
after hearing that 'love me do' i know why they fired him. he's pretty shit

I agree with Best that the time change in the harmonica solo is better and more interesting than keeping it regular.

I think this is a great version of 'Love me do' & in spite of the demo quality of the performance shows the raw talent behind it

I believe that it was Pete's eratic drumming on this version of Love Me Do that cost him his job in the Beatles.

yeah, terry gross is an icon and all but she's typical holier-than-thou NPR. she sounds like she got her questions from a Beatles prompt book.
