Great vid! I'm going to show this to my Microprocessors students before they begin their semester projects, just to give them a feel for what it takes to design and build "from scratch." Thanks!
I'm a noob who just got an ATMega328 and a ADXL335 accelerometer. I'm looking to build a small circuit. Sole purpose: sound an alarm when frequencies between 10Hz and 20Hz are detected at a certain amplitude. I've looked everywhere for C fft code for filtering for this app, the surrounding explanations are filled with tech lingo that would take me months to make any sense of. None of 'em are aimed at first time users. Whatever the code, it has to work with AVR Studio. Any ideas or pointers?
@fullofhate77 I would recommend that you take the time necessary to understand the "tech lingo", or start with an easier project. Progress is made easier with many small steps, that you gather knowledge from.

@Robosos Hehe, yes. My new system will not have this LED indication panel, it will use a RS485 bus and show all signals and states on a computer HMI (human machine interface).

I'm beginning to learn electronics and do some small, simple projects, but I'm a really poor solderer. I could never even hope to solder 15 or so tiny wires to one port.
Would going to Uni for electronics next year improve that "skill" of mine?
@Niohimself ... i dont get this. Ive never touched a soldering gun before, and yet, im able to do the DB25 conectors easily... even the smbs' are easy... it cant be that hard.
If you keep up soldering, you will get better at it. I started a few years ago and was terrible (I have the burns to back this up). I kept at it and I am a much better solderer now. Just keep it up.
Practice Soldering. If you want to go to school for electronics, that's cool.
Soldering though, just takes some practice. The soldering gun helps too. Some guns are easier to solder with than others. Hope that helped. Peace. I.C.S.D.

does someone have advice for a normal AVR programming cable. LPT port to ATMEGA8-16PU. I just want the correct pinouts for the lpt ports, so manhy sites have so many different diagrams. I want a normal damn cable :-(
... im jealous. i want that rack... :D thats ok il probably go out and build an arduino security module. and fire module and stuff. actuly i may do more than that. i need more memory whats got more than the arduino?
I'm quite sure I'm a man, and up to this point basic has done the job. But with increased complexity basic falls short, I'm studying C for my next project.
I admire you! :) Say, what's up with your web-site?! :( You've got it down and uploaded some wiki-version of it, blah! :(
I've a question, if I may. Just bought an AVR JTAGICE mkII and a few ATmega644Ps and ATmega2560s. Is that alright as a beginning point? Never used microcontrollers before, so this is going to be my first interaction with them. ;)
I don't have any experience with the JTAGICE and the devices you have bought. My understanding was that the JTAGICE was a on-chip debugging tool. It is a powerful tool with many features:) But as a freshman i would recommend the STK500 or newer card. It's not expensive and it's a good platform.
Yeah I have replaced the site with a wiki, easier to maintain. At the moment the site is in Norwegian, but I am planning to translate it to English.
can i use a microcontroller that i would have bought at a place like radio shack to control my lights, tv, and other things like that with just some code and hooking the devices to the microcontroller?

Interesting, you looked like you knew what you were doing. I think I remember you saying that it turns the living room light off when the porch door opens, doesn't it get annoying when you are in the livingroom and someone walks out the porch door and the light goes out?
Yes that would get annoying, here is how it works:
The module controls both the livingroom lights and the porch door, but they are not connected. If the porch door is open for more then 20 seconds the heat in the livingroom is turned off.
The lights is turned on/off manually, using control panels, internet, cell phone or when the apartment goes into nightmode (only on weekdays).
Really motivated me to get going on my excessive overkill fan/pump/peltier controller :)
