A legendary duo. One can barely aspire to reach a tenth of that level. This show is LEGEND. If you have time, check the cover of The Boxer on my channel.
Song is amazing. It gives me chills... every single lyric is brilliant. Easily one of the best live performances I've ever seen. The whole concert in central park is great, but this particular song is just off the charts. 3000x better than the original. I wish that I could have grown up in this era. You can tell the music and the people enjoying it actually mean something to Art and Paul. These days, people will be quick to sell out for a quick buck. Fuck that.
I sometimes wonder if, on occasion, the likes of Brittany Spears, Justin Bieber, et al, watch artists like S&G, Jim Croce, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, etc. and understand just how "out of their league" they really are.
I love this version of this song. I prefer this to the original not only because of the brilliant added verse, but because of the screw up at the beginning. It makes you realize that they are actually humans who make mistakes rather then gods...plus it's kinda cute.
I own the CD of this concert (and attended it live so many years ago). I really like the moment when one of them (who cares who and why!!) screws up the lyrics/timing early on in the song. On the CD you can HEAR them smiling at each other - amused by screwing up one of their standards. Now I get to see them grinning at each other.
love the extra lines. saw them a few years ago in CA...magnificent. they did some very memorable stuff...this one being my favorite. But they're ALL great.
I remember this song when I was in kindergarten. Every time it rained or stormed when I was on the bus, this song would play on the radio station. Talk about amazing memories. Thanks for posting this!
What i grew up with, went shopping for groceries to jacksons and woolworths was well alive! Its too sad to see it all so lol! Only the baby sitter could play this lol xx
I think deep down they still love each other alot. You can see it come out from time to time. The anger they have just seems easier to display, as with all of us. The music they created is their glue and will always be their bond. The stronger the glue/music, the harder it is for them to completely walk away from each other.
Re: the glitch-- Art sang the verse according to the original version, Paul's timing was off; or, they rehearsed a new arrangement and Art stepped in too soon... At any rate, who cares? These moments personalize the music and the performers. Everyone is so critical, like dutiful consumers, and ready to complain if something isn't perfect. Music is neither a competition nor a product-- it's a living and spontaneous process. If you want to keep score, watch sports.
Sorry butyour wrong. Art screwed up. Paul is always rearranging his material. Art sang the original timing but Paul had changed it - Art forgot, that's all. Proves they're human.
How come nobody mentioned how Art comes in early right in the beginning of the song at the "I have squandered" part. Paul was supposed to put in an instrumental line between the two first lyric lines but Art jumps the gun. Paul has to fix the instrumental line and then they correctly come in together. Paul looks over at Art surprised when Art sings "I have squandered" during what was supposed to be the instrumental line.
In the track I have, on the Bridge Over Troubled Water CD, the timing's the same as Art's here. To me it sounded like Paul was too late. But maybe they were doing it differently here.
ha its true art jumps the gun and paul makes a face that says "you dumbass" but then they both laugh it off. these things do happen, even to a polished rehearsed act
My favorite S n G song. Bridge over troubled water is a close second but there's something about this song that gets me every time. I think it's the story that the lyrics tell.
The visual and audio aren't synced very well...what do you expect from the 60's or 70's and then formatted and clipped and submitted...gonna be a bit of it going on...
People try to find out what the song is really about, "Paul Simon wrote this song about himself" etc, but I think it's best that the meaning of song always be left up (although this isn't always possible) to the imagination of the listener.
@benyoda3 i love this version of one of the best songs ever written.....the extra verse: "Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin even me
I am older than I once was, and younger than Ill be, thats not unusual
No it isnt strange, after changes upon changes, we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same"......that verse makes the whole song for me, anyway.....it rings so very true.....but i have never heard it played except at the Park....dont know why
Compare the music of these guys with that of some of their contemporaries, like the shitty Beetles (who made hundreds of songs of which only a handful are bearable), and you will easily see how rich these songs and lyrics are. Thanks for uploading this.
to say that the Beetles are shitty is not only ignorant, it's quite moronic! By the way you're compare apples with oranges! Having the best orange in the bunch does not preclude having an equivalently awesome apple! And yeah, S&G are superb! and so are the Beetles!
I bought the double LP (!) when it first came out and I loved every song. How extraodinary and lovely to hear it again with the visuals - thank you very much.
paul simon was talking about himself at this song .. they critisized him heavily so he was like a boxer against a vicious opponent .. the best part is Now the years are rolling by me They are rocking evenly And I am older than I once was And younger than I'll be, but that's not unusual. No, it isn't strange After changes upon changes We are more or less the same After changes we are more or less the same i liked it very much strong and powerful words
after changes we are almost the same......
