I read a book written by some former employees of Shelby. They said that he originally took his idea for an American power train shoved into a British roadster to the corporate guys at GM. It was after being turned down that he went to the clowns at Found On Road Dead.
I wonder what would have happened if GM accepted his offer... a '67 Shelby Cobra SS 427? Screw the Fix Or Repair Daily Fagstang, we coulda had a Camaro GT 500. Thanks a lot, GM. Ya really dropped the ball on that car!
@gtofan2005 thats right a cobra was originally an AC ACE shelby made the frame more ridgid but when they put a 427 in it the engine is too big you can very easily wrap yourself around a pole it leaps like a frog
I LOVE this song and the Rip Chords who sing it. I also love the Cobras. I was lucky to live at the time when the beautiful oldies and beautiful cars were around. Today does not have not music, just noise. I love ALL the old cars.
@HickysBoy And yet in 1963 they beat everything on the NHRA circuit. They "managed" that well enough. I think we need to remember Shelby built them for the quarter mile not for road races or nascar.
@John1948Ten actually shelby did build them for the road races, deff not nascar, but yea, in the beginning, the chassis flexed too much, they beefed em up and took out everthing on the track
@clintonearlwalker It is common knowledge amoung car enthusiasts that the Cobra was overpowered and handled terribly. The ZR1 Vette has more horsepower and thanks to modern electronics handles perfectly but all they had in the 60's was horsepower and primitive suspension compared to today's standards but, Hey, who am I to disagree with the Ripcords.
@1bountifulinc I had a '83 mustang GT with a 5.0 HO and headers. I outran more than 1 stingray on twisty highways. As a matter of fact, 1 time a stingray wanted to race, when he mashed on it blue smoke rolled out the back of his car, he didn't win.
This was neither an AC Cobra nor a Mustang Cobra. This was a Shelby Cobra, 2 seat, 427c.i. sports car that was built on a beefed and extended AC Cobra frame by Carroll Shelby to whupass Corvettes and XKE Jags on the road course..and they sure as hell did!!
@John1948Ten You can put a name or badge on anything. That doesn't make it valid. A "horse-snake" is a joke. This song is about REAL Cobras, Shelby 427 Cobras. Not 4 seater pony cars.
@herbienbrian : this was the first record I ever bought. I think it was 1962 and I was 8 years old. I could not articulate at that age why I liked it....but I knew it made me feel good when I heard it
How COOL!! Love the song! Love the pictures!! The first one - The Mustang with it's wheels in the air and at 1:13 the "69" Boss - Awesome!! Great job!!

@JTheGuitarPlayer That Ford would run anything GM into the ground. You're kind of nasty about it aren't you?

They were fast but handled terribly, the Shelby Cobra, that is.

@1bountifulinc I drove a 289 once and you are correct. I am told the 427 was basically unmanageable...

@1bountifulinc Ain't you listening to the song at all? The one in the song doesn't seem to have any trouble getting around the far turn:
Around the far turn
In the straight-away
I was blowing off everything
That got in my way
The Stingrays and Jags
Were so far behind
I took my Cobra out of gear
And I coast to the line
Sounds like it does pretty good for a car that handles terribly.

Someday even if it's just the kit, I WILL own a Shelby Cobra. Coolest car of all time.
JLWing77 1 year ago
would much rather own a shelby cobra than a generic Ford mustand cobra. Shelby was a a true artist in the fusion between man and machine
