This is actually the cam I got right now. It's great. I find it simple to use, and I'm not great at navigating threw a cam menu. But this isn't too annoying. I really like panasonics products.
Great review. Think I going to dump my Pentax K20D and go for this or LX5. The K20D's noise reduction and AF is getting on my tits, very poor, results would put you off photography. I like thge fratures available on the Panny for such a small camera. Time to do some more research.
I had a panasonic DMC-FZ38 for 2 days, boy all plastic, pics terrible, video codecs AVCHD Lite which is a pain to work with in any editing sotware, Raw in adobe Photoshop CS4 plugin problems, Zoom noise, Image noise, Little twinky sounds like a baby toy, How can this junk ever sell?. I am glas I got shot of it for the same price. Only bought it as a chuck about camera, Glad I have my Canon D5 and Pentax K20D, think I have been spoilt with these two!!
get the zs7 instaed this camera is to expensive and it has a little or not that many good features, i mean u cant zoom while recording and it only has 2.5x optical zoom . or just ge the fz38k i have the fz28k and that camera is the best camera that i ever had, this lx3 sucks ass, sorry!!!
hey im an art student and a first time camera buyer.... ive been looking around and im not sure whether to go for the E-PL1 from Olympus or this( due to the price compared to the pen)
Its always better to shoot color than convert the image to B&W on computer. That way you have an extra layer of control because colors affect black and white images, besides another up side is. That if you decide you want color you will still have both options. However if you shoot in camera black and white you cant convert it to color
can any owners please tell me if the lens on this camera retracts if the camera is idle for some minutes while still on?, because i really cant stand that.
The lens doesnt retract. The camera turns itself off after 5 minutes, but you can turn this powersaving feature off in the menu. If you have the new firmware (2.1, you can download it), you can set in the menu that zoom setting will be restored after turning the camera on.
Max. video length is 10m30s for 1280x720x24 and 15m for all other formats. Picture is quite fine, sound and compression is pretty lame. The 10m HD take almost 2Gbytes.
Great camera, except for weak on-camera flash - a universal problem for Panasonic cameras. I can only find the special compact flash in the Leica model.
I was thinking of going with the G9, but I didn't like the fact that Canon still didn't get their ISO noise problems worked out. Despite the lack of a manual viewfinder, the wealth of features in this camera and lens quality is more than enough to make it a winner.
No manual viewfinder, eh? Very odd to see on a camera of this high price range. Nevertheless, it is nice to see Panasonic actually playing this smart and increasing the image quality of their sensor; opposed to the countless point-and-shoot cameras out there who go for higher megapixels, but consequently, lower-quality shots due to a poor image sensor.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the Ricoh LC-1 self-retaining lens cap works with this model, as seen @ Danny Choo's blog.
Great review; thanks a lot! I think I will be getting this to replace my ageing CyberShot DSC-T30. The f2.0 will definitely come in handy. Would have been nice if you mentioned a bit about its macro capabilities though; but I guess it's about the usual for a compact.
@dearGirlieLetter get the zs7 instaed this camera is to expensive and it has a little or not that many good features, i mean u cant zoom while recording and it only has 2.5x optical zoom . or just ge the fz38k i have the fz28k and that camera is the best camera that i ever had, this lx3 sucks ass, sorry!!!
Can you tell me what is the best between Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 and Canon IXUS 950IS ???
I am enthusiast photographer (I hope to be pro) but I am looking for cheap and semi-pro camera (with good video recording) before I buy my first professional DSLR
Gordan your review are by far the best. I saw your review for the g10 and was impressed. Initially that is the camera I was after Bu after seeing the LX3, I've been feeling a bit torn - Which would you recommend personally ? g10 or LX3?
Particularly good is the demo of the manual focus option with the joystick and focus buttons. Some coverage of the special scene modes like taking all 3 aspect ratios at once, high sensitivity and burst modes.
hi Gordon. tanx for the review. I really think about to buy the lx3. but do u know, if panasonic (or somebody else) will produce an underwater housing? I know, that there is a producer in tokio, who makes those 1200.-dollar professionalhousing...to expensive!!or maybe I should buy the TZ5. I know there are housings for. Tanks!
Hi, I don't know, sorry, but feel free to ask in the Panasonic section of the cameralabs forums! Or have a look at some dedicated diving websites as this isn't an area I'm an expert on - sorry!
Gordon, may I know whether this camera has the ability to make the focused area coloured while the rest of the image is in B&W as found in Canon cameras?
Gordon, please tell me which I should get Lx3 or G10?? Im a novice in photography but wanting the learn the basics..I'm not sure if I'm ready to step to a slr..and main point I dont like weight. Lx3 and g10 has it's pro and cons..but after reading many reviews including yours..seems Canon just like to increase megapixels rather then using it's sensors full potential. I want a camera with best image quality for landscape, street photography and some portraits...with manual functions.
Hi, check out the verdict page of my G10 review at cameralabs . com - it compares them both. Then feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Hey Gordon, do you know if the dimensions of the LX3 are the same as the LX2? I'm wondering if the new leather case (the one that lets the camera hangs around your neck like a rangefinder) will fit the LX2
I'm not sure - you'd need to check the dimensions in both reviews (design pages at cameralabs . com) or at Pansasonic's website. Remember some holes may not line up though!
I love my LX2. the functionality and size. What i don't like about LUMIX is that they are not so much into Firmware updates. Unfortunately I have to wait for a new model to come out just to see an update. I would have enjoyed my LX2 much more if Lumix considered updating firmwares every now and then. So I don't know how much commitment will Panasonic/Lumix put into this specific product. I only wish that DP1 would have copied LX2/LX3's Menu system. LOL
Thanks for this, and all of your other great reviews.
This must be a pretty crazy time for you, with the release of several new models, and the start of Photokina. Do you intend to make a video review of the Nikon D90 at some point? That would be fantastic!
It has the potential to, but you have to process it in software on your computer - sometimes the default settings in the software don't look great though - see the results pages for this review at cameralabs . com.
Gordon what do you think of the canon eos 40d. I am switching from a semi slr. I know dslr's very well but i wan't a semi pro camera. What do you prefer the nikon d300 or canon 40d?
The 40D certainly represents great value at the moment - check the verdict page of our D300 review at cameralabs . com to comare them both, and you may also want to read our EOS 50D preview again at cameralabs.

things to upgrade in the lx 4:
- Wider lens (since a lot of Panasonic's automatic models feature equal wide-angle measurements, which takes away one of the features of the LX3)
- Same or brighter aperture
- Longer focal length
- Deeper grip
- Automated lens cover
Great camera otherwise
