The car is supposed to be an M5. The filmmakers apparently did their best by using the appropriate badges or whatever else. BUT, the M5 has red dashboard needles and this E34 doesn't. So, yeah, as far as the plot goes, that's an M5. In reality, it's just an E34.

i love how accurate this is. as a racecar driver its super obvious to me when the physics of a chase scene doesnt make sense, and it can ruin the whole movie for me. example: Driver
ahhhh....she punked him out...Irish bitch...some bad-ass cars...she looked stressed as hell driving that thing...avoiding all that shizzz...I don't know how they do these car chase scenes, they're amazing...I'm not even a big car-chase dude I usually think it's a cheap substitute for dialog and an intelligent plot but in this movie they thrill..the old Irish terrorist was Governor Swann..Elizabeth Swann's dad in "Pirates of the Carribean"...those Frenchies should let that terrorist burn to death
Autotrader one week later: Peugeot 406, one careful owner from new. Only 12,000 miles on the clock. Needs two new front tires. Recent new wing mirror.
@PoliticalAdverts Yes, but it hasn´t got the M bumpers wich were standard. At the end of the chase the wheels are the 15 inch BBS and in some shots you can see M bumpers, but in others there´s not...
At the beginning the sound of the car seems to be an S38B36 from the M5, so maybe they used a real M5 for some scenes and another E34 for the risky ones...
If you buy the 2 disc special edition DVD there's some featurettes about how they filmed the chases. In order to get shots of De Niro and Natasha McElhone behind the wheel while the cars were moving, they used right hand drive cars from the UK with dummy steering wheels on the left side (which is where the steering wheel would be on a French market car), while a stunt driver drove it. They also towed the cars using a Mercedes 500E. Porsche 911s were used as camera cars.
At 7:10, that's how Princess Diana got killed. The Mercedes ran into a concrete pillar in a Paris underpass.
This is an exciting chase even though all the oncoming cars that they successfully dodge through are nicely and evenly spaced apart, allowing the two cars to negotiate them. And the many vehicles that crash create a lot more sparks that in real life, too.
@cliquehop The 540i is a V8. There are some different cars in the scene, the first has M5 3.6 alloys, but standard bumpers so it isn´t an M5. At the end, when they shoot the tyre, it has standard BBS alloys. When the Citroen zx police car is next to the BMW it has the ///M bumpers. At 7:43 it doesn´t have the interior mirror, but then it has it again. It has some mistakes that I see after watching this scene about 100 times, but it stills the best car chase ever.
Maybe Euro spec M5s look a little different? Maybe they wrecked it a few times while filming and they went with non-M5 parts so they wouldn't have to delay filming while waiting for M5 parts. Maybe they went with a non-M5 look for consistency's sake so that the "star" E34 and non-star E34s would all look the same.. Scenes like this often require many cars as several of them often end up totaled. There could be many reasons for the discrepancy.
@sneric401 That's is what I figured, any number of parts of this scene looked like they could easily ruin a car in shooting, I bet they went through several of them during the making of this, and I doubt they would find the exact same model for each shot. My guess is they just obtained several E34s of various spec and went from there.
@ScubaSteveM45 Well i owned a 91 m5 that i just sold and i know in 91 they only made 1600 of them. So getting a lot of m5's would be hard but in europe getting im guessing 10-12 of them wouldnt be so hard. they made more for europe.
If you listen to the director's commentary, he clearly states that it is an M5. He also states that for some of the shots they actually pulled the M5 with another car to make the M5 go even faster. What did they pull the M5 with? A 500E! I'm not making this up! Listen to the director's commentary for yourself!!!
I wish I had e34 M5, but they are extremely hard to get these days. I recently bought a 1992 BMW 535i with a 5 speed manual tranny, which is the closest thing I'll ever get to original M5. As a matter of fact manual 535i is as rare as M5 - only 5% of them had 5 speed, and since they were not as collectible as M5s, there is not to many of them left any more. Probably only a few hundred left in the USA. Email me if you are a BMW nut like myself!
Hey, you aren't the guy I met at the Ontario pick-a-part are you? I'm the guy that asked if you want to go to the street legal drags at California Speedway.
I'm 90% positive that the BMW is NOT an M5, although they made it look pretty close to it. It has turbine wheels, front bumper is of an M5, steering wheel, but... small details. First, look at the door trim: original M5 should have a black "shadow trim", this one is chrome, just like a regular e34. Second: look at stick shifter - the console around is flat, while M5 has hollowed surface around shifter. Three: M5 had sport seats without arm rests, I saw arm rests in up position in one scene.
Very Very impressive. But one thing IS true, that 406 being a petrol variant, would have overheated and suffered a catastophic engine failure within 5 minutes. (sarc)
Hello there.. I need som help too find where som mountain where robert deniro and jean reno is driving when robert is hurt and they meet a friend i a special low grew moutains i france.. Can som help me to indetify where thats place is?? Best regards panzerkeiko
holy crap... aside from all the explosions and some of the too fake scenes, that was the best car chase scene i've ever seen in my life, i've always wanted to watch this movie, now i now why
Hmnn not sure now the car sounds more like a 535i sports with a manual box but it could be a 3.6er m5, but somehow i am not sure. Partly because it did not sound as throaty as an //m and not a screamer, plus the steering. Overall could have been 3cars all in a (525i,535i sports both manual and short scenes with the 3.6l //m) this seems most logical to me. I've got one that's why i feel these way
It's definitely an M5, the M-System-1 'Turbine' alloys are just one of the give away features. The subtle lip spoiler seen when the ZX policecar chases is another clue.
I know, my father had one in the early 90's and I remember it very well.
I currently own a 95 525i (M50) & a 94 530i (M60V8 & 5 speed) and I know buy the bagde on the steering wheel that it is a 95 E34. I run the V8 every day at 4-6K rpm and I am saying that that car is a 530 or better yet a 540i with a 6 speed gearbox. I had a 93 525i with a 5 speed and it did not sound like the one in the movie.
@wahweap1 but the cars all had the narrow grill which indicates 6 cylinder mtr.also the wheels are budget spec so it is probably a 89 535 si...i own an e34 also ,so i can point out things i notice as well .but any how great car chase ,they kept it real better than most hollywood action films .
90% of the shots are of a E34 535i `90-`91. The other 10% is a M5 (interior shots, 1-2 exterior). See Internet Movie Car Database, search Ronin, BMW M5. The sounds are from a real E34 M5. I rode in one a few weeks ago on the Nurburgring. The 525i (M50) and 535i do sound similar at times, but this is a M5.
There is more than one BMW E34 car used in this sequence. At least one of the cars appears to be an '89 - '91 M5, as it has the correct M-Tech Turbine 1 wheels, trunk badge, and the under-body trim. Other shots show what could be anything from a 520i to a 535i. Note the audio is NOT that of an S38 (M5) engine, but since that's completed in the sound studio it is no indication of which car was actually used for the film shoot.
it's the first m5 1990...with the 315 bhp ...these black leather recaro buckets where in the standard package...and of course the sound!also at the 3:51 check the steering wheel..pure ///M steering wheel...the S38B38 was in the "facelifted" E34 with more wide "kidneys" in the front and much MUCH COOLER wheels...check this one out how stupid wheels have and how narrow are the kidneys...so it's a "first" M5 with the 315...
Its not an M5, since the e34 M5's had clear turn signal lights, and these ones are orange. Too bad it wasn't a new M5, it would be so easy to tell since M5 is written all over the car.
till 2002 yes they were..i can't forget my 106 rallye first 1.3 cc with 100 after that 1.6 8v and then i had a 1.6 16v which i crashed cuz i was an idiot...now peugeot makes cars for madame
That's a nice set of ears you've got there Sir. And you are absolutely right. The V6 406 wasen't launched at that time, so the 2.0 Turbo was the car of choice. Strange to think that it actually only had 150 hp for a top-model. So in other words: would it be able to bitch-slap a 300+ hp M5? I don't think so!

There is nothing like the sound of those old BMW straight 6's. My dad had an old 635 CSI. That engine could power a tank. The first car I bought was an 86 325 is. The car had over 350,000 miles and was shit by the time I got rid of it, but the engine still growled.

There were two cars used for this film they used an early m5 (3.6) and a 535i, I read an article on it a while back

I am sure that loads of people are gonna go mental at me for saying this but I am pretty sure its a e34 535i with Mpower pack
sprallan2508 3 years ago
You are correct. The interior shot is not an M as the console at 3:04 is not scalloped. The soundtrack is certainly not M20,M30 or M50.

e34 M5 3.6

I think it's an M5, at least on some scenes.
M seats
M Turbine wheels
Looks like an M front bumper, but it's quite hard to see as the quality is quite low.
Just funny that it's not in two tone color as it was on almost every dark colored M5
At 8:51 you see the engine cover underneath (M5), and I do think that the cats look like M5 cats.
Sounds like an M5
I'd say it's a 3.6 in some of the scenes.
BoSJo99 3 years ago
Had a second look, It's not an M5 front bumper.
At 8:55 there is suddenly no engine cover under the car
BoSJo99 3 years ago
this is a tv-edited version!? and bad encoder.. (framerate got fked)
but I dont believe it's an m5 or 540i from the sound,
it is probably a 525i. however nto sure. someone who owns the car should see.. (and european version not n. American)
looking at bumper is stupid, listen to engine

it has an m shifter and you can see an m logo in one of the scenes on the back
and you have to remember that it is being drvin by a chick thats why the other car can keep up

is it an 2liter turbo 406?? cause it song not like a v6 and i dont think a diesel can chase a n m5 isnt it??
straight6lover 3 years ago
That's a nice set of ears you've got there Sir. And you are absolutely right. The V6 406 wasen't launched at that time, so the 2.0 Turbo was the car of choice. Strange to think that it actually only had 150 hp for a top-model. So in other words: would it be able to bitch-slap a 300+ hp M5? I don't think so!

they used 4 BMWs, I know one was a right hand drive 535i sport, used for filming inside shots

There is nothing like the sound of those old BMW straight 6's. My dad had an old 635 CSI. That engine could power a tank. The first car I bought was an 86 325 is. The car had over 350,000 miles and was shit by the time I got rid of it, but the engine still growled.
