I found out that Anak Krakatau is actually a super volcano, and it is the most active out of all of the others. Including Yellowstone. And considering that a massive population of people are nearby, that thing is a disaster waiting to happen.
@BCSpore: No, it's not a supervolcano (whatever that is) and it is not the most active; Kilauea erupts daily for years on end. At its worst it was rated a VEI6.
The scientists rate the volcano on the amount of material erupted from the volcano.
Krakatoa is a special case. It is not the amount of ejecta material that makes it dangerous, it is the pressure, and explosive gas formed in the magma inside Krakatoa that made it blow to smithereens.
Kinda like volts and amps. Voltage is the pressure, and amps are the amount.
@BCSpore: Yes, but it is still rated a VEI6. The pressure that is released in a volcano is all generated right near the mouth, where the water in the lava comes out of dissolution and flashes to steam. The explosiveness is related to the amount of water in the lava, and that's the difference between a Hawaiian, a Strombolian and a Plinian/Pelean volcano like Krakatoa. The caldera wasn't caused by explosion, but like all others, by the collapse of the magma chamber roof into the empty chamber.
Anak Krakatoa errupts every 15 mins or so, and now the explosions are real big, I watched it at 8PM, it was like watching Fireworks with real big explosive sound, and when the Lava flows down the slopes, Its AMAZING.
Nice one. My son sent us a tex yesterday from Krakatoa syaing he was being shwered with ash the resembled sand grains and watching some amazing eruptions. The noise he says is like sonic booms from jets.
actually, its name is KRAKATAU. not krakaTOA

@puncheex pressure can also be caused by cooler stickier magma. like in cinder cones. when they go, they fuckin BOOM! D:

Watching this is like waiting for an earthchattering disaster to happen, like in the 1880s.
It's not a matter of 'if', but 'when' it will happen.

When Krakatoa erupted in the late 1800's the explosion was heard as far as 3000 miles away and is the loudest noise ever recorded in history.
