Wow you are really in to hydroponics your setup looks very expensive and seriously built(well planned and great details). what is the minimum wattage that I can use?
Those are simple aquarium/plant flouresents you can buy at Wal-mart (about $7.00 for the light and 9.00 for the 2 light fixture). Your plants may get a little leggy if they are not directly over the top of your crop, but they work just fine as you can see...
The tomato's actually never got a chance to produce indoors. They actually just started fllowering when I moved in March last year and ended up putting them outside. I do have another new and improved upgraded system up and running at my new place including aquaponics with Tilapia, and will be posting another video soon. I also have a page on Facebook called "Otterponics" (if you dont grow in water.....you otter).
BTW I think you might be able to lower your lights a litle more too, with lower power Flouro's it can really make a difference. Have you tried mixing slight color temp lights together yet? like warmer redish in the 4k area along with those higher freq ones? Also I am wondering that black tube you have for your strawberries, does the color make any difference for the pipeing at all? I was under thwe impression you had to use white?
Very nice setup mate, I'm inpressed! Isn't it amazing that a system store bought that is in reality almost no different that what you have built in the size you have here for tomatoe and lettuce side would cost an easy 1000+ dollars. It's absurd I know. Anyways I think I am going to replicate this design on a smaller scale for testing I have a cold basement and my tomatoes might not like it either. I'd suggest getting at least 1 600watt or 1000watt HPS or MH light in there to warm it in winter.
I'm interested in building a one level system like yours for tomato plants and other veges. Could you point me in the right direction for plans? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
I'm looking for plans to build a large basement system for large and small veges. Could you point me in the right direction? Any tips would be appreciated!
Thats actually black 3" ABS pipe. And I believe I got it at Home Depot. If not there then Lowe's. Very cheap. It's a bit harder than PVC and a little more rigid. Drills out nicely.
Nice growth, I really love watching videos with strawberries in them. They way the shoot those runners out and allow you to grab it and just plug it into another grow pot- viola! I can't wait to get my system up - nice stuff. Where did you find the black pvc?

your plants look very overwatered and undernuted and yes the light is extremely high. Piss in the water too, its good for growth.

looks like a great set-up. do you have algae buildup in the main flow tubes? or do the clay balls cover high enough that the tubes get no light?
swimmins1 1 year ago
@swimmins1 No problem with algea in the tubes at all.

Great progress! Check out my basement grow. How's your electric bill doing with the fluorescent lighting?
