that's pretty awesome. I heard one in my mom's backyard a month or so ago, then saw him fly over. havent seen/heard him again. I need to practice. Is Chris giving lessons? ;) he imitates perfectly!
I was just doing this for about 40 minutes in my backyard. My German Shepherd was out and she was just freaked out and wanted in the house! I saw one fly over. They were making the most bizarre sounds, like monkeys hooting and just crazy stuff.I guess it is their mating call. But it sounded like there were about 3 or 4 owls,so I wonder if two or more males were courting with a female? It was neat, anyway.
Pretty cool. I do this on warm nights. It's a lot of fun. My record is 12 birds kinda nearby. Didn't know about the "last hoot theory" Never heard about that. Although "mine" have a little different call pattern in Butler PA. Goes in a sequence too, same call, same call, same call, call with weird ending, repeat...
Thanks. This was recorded on the Montezuma Muck Race count, which is held at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca County, NY. I would like to add that after Chris and his friend called in the owls, they let the owls "win" by allowing the real owls to have the final hoots, thereby proving the owls' superiority at chasing the intruders away and maintaining their territory.
Thanks, I'll pass that on. When he was a kid, my husband used to go to sleep listening to bird songs. Now as an adult, he has a really good ear for bird vocalizations.
