Labyrinth is the black sheep of the 2 Brian Froud films, it's so wiird and makes little sense. The nonsensical music of David Bowie doesn't help either.
@Zaranyzerak Yes. The effects in Dark Crystal are to this day astounding to say the least. I still wonder why we resort to CGI instead of more organic puppetry.
Great vid Z. I had to go out and get this because your review. I already had the 25th Anniversary Edition, but I had to get this edition because of all f the great stuff!!!! Once again, great review man!
I probably going to pick this up on blu ray because I read that it is actually a very good transfer. i have also nevr seen the whole movie, only bits and pieces. I am a fan of Jim Henson so I do not think I will be dissapointed.
I must admit, Dark Crystal creeped me out as a kid...of course i didnt see it til 85 when i was 7yrs old. Labrynth was alright, i was crushing on jennifer connelly..ha
I think a remake of the Thing could be ok if it was done right. It's a film that has a lot of heavy spesial effects and they could be inproved.
Hollewood dose not like creativity. It likes things that are safe and established. They'd rather the independents be experonmentle and then just coppy them when there is a success....maybe that's just a little too synical.
I am tired of them shitting on all these classic movies...
... take some chances - there ARE creative people out there, but they can't seem to get their movies made because production companies just want to play it safe.
And therein lies the problem... A lot of what makes the 1982 film so great is not KNOWING anything about the alien going in (I love showing the film to people who have never even heard of it before and watching the looks on their faces!), part of it is the mystery of discovery as the team figures out exactly what it is and pieces together what happened to the Norwegian team. In the end, I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens. Hopefully nothing...
Power of the Dark Crystal has been rumored for a long time as a direct to DVD sequel (not sure if that's still the case) suposedly it's coming in 2011...
it's being directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Clone Wars).
This is from IMDB - "Tartakovsky agreed to direct on two conditions: that the film would utilize live-action puppets as well as computer animation, and that 'Brian Froud' would return to design the characters."
Maybe that our Screenwriters, Artists, Producers, Agents, Producers & Directors are making an industry now to rehash on true quality films because they no longer are on a trip. Just establish the hard stuff that practically all in the industry were taking in the 80's and we might just get more great and unique films and stories in this industry. Since there has been a passing of great people over the years that made those. Those agents need to go out and get those new artists and storytellers.
Yes! We really need to focus again on the creativity and great storytelling, instead of Hollywood and the mass media spending all their time focussing on manufactured celebrities that contribute nothing worthwhile at ALL to the entertainment world, and only exist simply to BE celebrities *cough*Paris Hilton*cough* There's creative people out there, waiting to be discovered... Come ON, Hollywood! Give these people JOBS! You can have CREATIVITY and make oodles of MONEY at the same time...
Maybe that our screenwriters or artists, producers and directors are rehashing on great films because. They are not on a Trip anymore, establish the hard stuff that all were taking in the 80's and we might just get more great and unique films in this industry, and the greed of hollywood would slant towards a breath of fresh air in a wave of pollution. lol.
4:53 Now this totally is down my road. Love the run through of how the optical sound is being described on that 35mm film. You really go into detail. Thank you!
This edition of Dark Crystal kinda reminds me of the collector's gift set of Spider-Man. which also had a frame and a letter but also had another version which didn't have swag but more special features.
And this remake thing is getting really anoyying. And if they do a Thing remake Rob Zombie is gonna direct it. Director of Halloween remakes!
Also i heard you're a Nightmare on Elm Street fan so you should check out the teaser for the remake.
Just checked out the teaser (I didn't know there was already a teaser until you mentioned it). I cringed when I saw Michael Bay's name attached to it. It kinda looks like a mish-mash of stuff from several of the old movies. And what's with Freddy supposedly being INNOCENT and wrongly killed?? He sure as heck was no saint in the original, both when he was alive and after... It LOOKS good visually, and Jackie Earle Haley looks right for the character. But I dunno...CAUTIOUS optimism.
Yup... AICN had an early script review... apparently there's some question as to whether Krueger is guilty OR if the kids just made it up because they didn't like him... making his REVENGE all that more, um... VENEGEFUL...
Almost sounds like they're trying to make Freddy a little more "politically correct." BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Because you know, it's OKAY if he kills kids when he's some demonic dream stalker after being killed, but oh noooooo it's RIGHT OUT to have him doing essentially the EXACT SAME THING when he's alive.... *pant pant pant pant*
About the senitype, since the movie is in Cinemascope the Black bars should be there, had it been Academy Ratio they woudn't but maybe you just misspoke.
Nope, you're thinking about how it appears on home video. The way the image is presented on FILM is different. Cinemascope (2.35:1) fills the frame, but is "stretched." The image is projected through an anamorphic lens which corrects the image, and "squeezes" it to the correct proportions.
Academy or "Flat" ratio (1.85:1) appears one of two ways on film - with the black bars visible on the film, or full frame (un-stretched) with the matting done in the projector by projecting through a gate.
Trust me, I used to be a projectionist. I am VERY familiar with how the different ratios are handled on film, and it's not the same way they're handled on home video.
Which is the proper way to say it when referring to the barbarian (or librarian). However Regis also refers to Mr. O'Brien this way... when it is supposed to sound more like "Cone-un" as is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. :)
I love The Dark Crystal! Fantastic film & Edition! Yet another great job Z! You never got back to me yet, have you seen my new computer yet? What do you think, pretty awesome eh? HEHE :D
Legend (the UK had the uncut version with the Goldsmith music). Princess Bride, Excalibur, Time Bandits, Hawk the Slayer, Clash of the Titans etc, We lapped up fantasy movies.
You are right, there was nothing like The Dark Crystal, and nothing since, it is a totally unique movie,
The 80s were a great decade for sci fi/fantasy and of course horror, the time where Hollywood went really creative, it's as if George Lucas showed them the way when he released Star Wars,
It must have been in the UK where they hyped up The Dark Crystal, because there were kids shows where they kept talking about it, and showing one of the mystics, and there was a behind the scenes documentary, so it was pretty well hyped in the UK.
I remember seeing it in the cinema and loved every minute of it, and I would love to see it again.
Sword and sorcery/fantasy movies were huge in the UK, such as Krull (which I do love, even though it's constantly mocked),
yet another title i don't need to worry about..as i already have it!..that is until the blue-ray release...must...have...i think i'm gonna do a follow up to this as the UK release of this set is slightly different in presentation.
wait..50s...then 80s..now ..now.. It seems that hollywoods well of creativity only lasts for 30 years then its back to digging out the old films and redoing them.
Collectors Edition Dark Crystal? I must have it! Loved this movie for many, many years :)

But that's a neat set, it's really one of those I'd almost buy just to have. lol
Because, I mean, I do not know the film at all as far as I know.
But I just kinda like neat stuff... :P Duh... :)
